For me mods can be just as important as the games itself's. Mods are basically fans loving a franchise so much, they take time to do there own thing. Mods bring out talent that you have ever seen and keeps franchises alive long after they have been done with.
@@georgiepig5726 agreed! Even as somebody who.. while isn’t to crazy on FnF nowadays, it… soemtimes even makes me hope to like. Make a mod someday, or some kinda fangame as a whole Would love to do a retelling on sonic forces, but add in the metal infection thing with it- or some kinda infection disease thing The idw comics are… semi canon to the idea I said- like the characters would be canon but in terms of how would be slightly changed It’d probably bring a good excuse to bringing in some of my oc’s as well? Which I know sounds a bit goofy to say but- I do wanna advice that like- if I ever did make a fangame on it I don’t want them to be like, the absolute main character, but a good big player in the story, aka what the avatar should’ve been in sonic forces It’d remove customization sure, but I feel itd probably be easier going for that route since I’d kinda envision it to be where you could play as sonic in one zone and tangle in another
Dude fr, companies want their games to last as long as possible to buy time to make another great game. Modding makes games last WAYYYY over their due date. Look at sonic generations for example. The modding scene is SCARY. Hell even the classics have mods that add infinite replay ability. Sometimes the devs themselves can learn from mods aswell to see what would peak the fans interest
Since Denuvo often gets cracked before a game officially releases, all it does is punish paying customers with an inferior product that likely spies on you.
I 10,000,000,000% agree with you on that! I also want to make my own games (and I've got a solid plan on how to do so), so this is a phenomenal rule to follow!
ALSO, Denuvo announced a while back they're going to be implementing their garbage DRM onto console games to fight against emulation. And the first console they announced it for was the switch. Y'know, the gaming tablet that's barely more powerful than a PS3? Thats totally not gonna nuke performance on it.
At this point I'm wondering if Denovo has REALLY good sweet talkers to speak to the executives or are just paying them to allow this to continue. They and the companies know we hate this by now.
Looks pretty clear to me they're paying big bucks to these companies so that the companies don't care how much it hurts their fanbase, why would they? They're getting payed good money up front. Meanwhile it seems like Denuvo's goal is to kill creativity in consumers, I can't think of any other way to interoperate their actions. It really does look like they only want creativity to come from the companies they pay.
The fact that Takashi talked highly of some mods, and put some of them in the updates, and Sonic Mania wouldn't be a thing without ROM hacks, you would think Sega would want to keep mods Also, no game has survived what Sonic has gone through, but Sonic fans stayed because of how Sonic team treated the fans, I have seen videos of Sonic fans talking about how they were going to leave the fandom, because of how Sonic Team let the fans mod, or make fan games, unliked Nintendo, they came back, how many fans got a bad Sonic game, just because how Sonic Team treats them, Sonic games are the only games I buy new, or get more than one because how we are treated, like Sonic Superstars, isn't perfect on PC, and as I have a brother, I'm getting it on the PS5, but I will get it on the PC when it's cheaper, and more mods, I also got Sonic Origins, I already had all the Sonic games
The only problem is that despite his praising of the community, Takashi is not the boss. The ignorant shareholders are the ones deciding about this, and unfortunately it wouldn't surprise me if they chose Denuvo over the modding community.
@@M0mazosMissyit's not about EGS. Epic has an online service that you can use separately from Unreal Engine. Steam's online service requires you to use steam so it can't work for cross platform releases.
Even though I haven’t played any mods(console player unfortunately) It’s pretty easy to see how important it is to the Sonic fan base if it can even reach fans without access to mods.
Something I should point out native fall ... Fighting is magic was cancelled because the creators were using ip without consent by Hasbro for money. It later evolved into themselves fighting herds. I did massive Reasearch into this and can assure you... It's not because of mods or anything. It was a ip problem. Hasbro is ok with using ip... But like Sega... They have to regulate it. They even said that it wasn't something they wanted to do, but had to. Especially since these people (mane 6 team) were trying to profit off of it and didn't properly credit or tell Hasbro of it... So it was a whole mix up that was basically a ip problem. Not really smoothly handled since this was Hasbro's first issue with their IP.
I didn't know it was because they tried monetizing it. I don't think I actually paid attention when it happened. Kinda feels like they dropped the ball on that one if they didn't monetize it.
@@nicholaslopez8099 well... I don't recall exactly what happened because it's been over a year since I did Reasearch... But I am gonna assume that's why.
But like what about the misterdavie animations? Qhy they were taken down? If Hasbro is ok with those things, then why Smile HD, and other videos were taken down by hasbro?
@@Futatabi6 smile HD was taken down because, if ya didn't know, Hasbro used it. Also they own MLP. Plus it's not so much a Hasbro thing as it is a RU-vid thing.
My question is, why does a DRM software think they have the right to dictate whether modding should be allowed or not? The DRM is to prevent piracy, not specifically to prevent modding. They say "stop modding our games", but they don't even have a hand in making the games. They're not their games. Not only does their software kill the performance of many games, but it always gets cracked within a couple of days. They're not even good at their jobs.
Who cares what Denuvo thinks? As long as the games Denuvo runs under, have cracks and trainer programs to remove that shit, they will continue to not matter to me. I "pirate" all of the PC games I buy and pay for, just to make sure there is no superfluous garbage like this running.
There are very few things worse for a digital piece of software than DRM. It is like a disease that ruins everything except pirates' ability to pirate.
As someone who follows the Sonic Hacking Contest almost every year in the last 5 years. And has learned so much about the people who went on to get actual industry jobs, even those in the beginnings of the contest even working at Sega. It's sad to see that we might be at risk of losing a community event that helped keep the lights on in the fan base while we had that 5 year gap until frontiers release.
Without fan projects or hacks like Retro Sonic or Sonic Megamix. There would be no Sonic 1, CD or 2 mobile remasters, no Sonic Mania, no Sonic Origins, No Origins DLC (which in my mind; has the hacking community pave the way for a playable Amy in recent games), and no Evening Star Game Studios. Not to mention the Freedom Planet and Sparks the Electric Jester franchises.
Modding a video game is what makes the base game a lot better. If the developers hate the mods, then they probably hate the fans too. Nintendo is more strict with their games. IDK who this Denuvo is, but they sound like hypocrites. Edit: Now that I know who Denuvo is, it's fair to say that they don't care about modders or the customers AT ALL.
@@Flash_Biggest_Hater its crazy how even the other sonic games that have been out for over many years and still have this DRM since those games are way past their sales windows and should of been removed but seems sega still wants to use this crappy drm despite the fans hating this. Other issues with denuvo is if the servers go down any game using that DRM will become unplayable. Console versions of sonic games seem to run better than the PC versions until someone finds a way to bypass denuvo.
its something i never thought till you said it, but yeah, if someone makes a mod of your game, is because they liked your game and wanted more of it, so they made more of it
I feel like with many things involving Sonic since nearly day 1, you can point most of the blame on Sega of Japan. SoJ has been stumbling on itself, shooting itself in the foot every time a non-Japanese made game/product does well or people outside of Japan want to touch/play certain games they make for Japan only because of this weird "we look bad in comparison so BURN IT ALL DOWN/ONLY NIPPON CAN ENJOY THIS" petty ego mindset they had since the late 90s/early 00s, trying to be as cheap as possible often, ignoring 90% of series they've made for at least a decade unless it's for mobile nonsense, and basically being as petty, spiteful and That Guy towards the community as possible whenever they want. Also not helping that they believe they ALONE made Sonic big and no one else ever, when in truth Sonic wouldn't have survived and become so big if it wasn't for Sega of America's mega marketing campaign for the blue blur.
I've been a switch player for years. I've been jealous of PC players since they have mods, but I only recently realized that mods can make my games more accessible. Now I'm buying most of my new stuff for PC so I can make it accessible for me.
Yknow i find it funny that for any sort of physical product you could ever imagine you are allowed to modify and change said product in any sort of way you see fit and no one cares, but when it comes to adding content to a game that's suddenly a huge nono. God i just love companies
the sonic community and denuvo is the same relationship as Sonic and eggman. two forces of nature, one wanting freedom and the other wanting complete control over everything, denuvo will always come back with something bigger and harder and more advanced but the modding community should always resist, destroy it and win in the end. don't let the big companies win, if sonic just lets eggman win cause he had a massive robot army then the entire world would've been robotisized long ago.
I, being an upcoming game dev, want to have modding support built in into games; which is why I'm doing that for a game I'm working on. And another thing I want to say is: I probably wouldn't have bought Celeste if it WASN'T for the amazing modding community. An example could be the Strawberry Jam mod. A massive, beautiful and fun collab mod.
Its hard for any system to seperate hacks and mods. Like in Bloons TD6 people can get leafed (meaning they wont be on any leaderboards) even if they just use a mod to make the speed up even faster.
I mean, at least denuvo was removed from sonic mania! Also, generations is older than denuvo itself. But with the rest of the sonic games mentioned, yeah, we're gonna have a problem.
I think there should be a new program which allows people to mod the games as long as you pay for the original copy otherwise the game would start. This way people could mod the game anyway they want without risking losing money over piracy For clarification, you can mod the game as long as the original copy is detected in your pc or console.
And this is why Sonic Robo Blast 2 still holds up very strong as well as a few other games before or after. Even FNF is thriving because it does not have Denuevo.
Note to self: if you make a high quality game and you're more than okay with people modding it out of love, NEVER use Denuvo and instead implement your own anti-piracy measure that's inspired by JSaB's anti-piracy message
For me modding helped me play old sonic games i've never played before such as Sonic Unleashed, which was running so bad and with 30 fps lock. Just after 60 fps patch game was started to feel MUCH better and playable. Sonic Heroes nowadays not even loading without mods on PC.
sega has been very supportive of sonic fan content and i think they've been backed into a corner because they cant control what denuvo does with their system.
Man, I remember being so disappointed that they delisted the Genesis Sonic games in place of Sonic Origins... and then slapped Denuvo on it. For a 30 year old game. Goodness. It's strange to think that they used to give *Steam workshop support* for Sonic 1. They technically still do, but only if you bought it before the delisting.
What game devs need to realize, mods can keep games relevant and alive. Resulting in new players buying the game to experience the new playstyles and content. A great example... Fallout New Vegas. All DLCs been out for years, yet new players join everyday despite the lack of official content being added. Modders adding new weapons and armor, creatures and locations, and full on new story elements. Giving the game INFINITE replay potential, meaning new players will not see an old game.
It doesn't have to be a detriment to Sonic games or just games in general. It could and should only be affecting Denuvo and should be a sign for developers and Sega to stop using Denuvo, because compared to Nintendo, Sega actually strived in the fan games and mods.
It's not just Sonic. It's also Sega's Yakuza series. Rather some of the "newer" games on steam in the Yakuza series. Yakuza has some amazing mods that make the game a lot more enjoyable such as making it faster to switch styles in fights, changing how moves are triggered, model swaps, etc. So it's not just the Sonic series by Sega.
mods are the one reason many people play games like doom (1993), duke nukem, minecraft or even skyrim and is basically the base of G mod, TF2, many indie games based on the doom engine, many indie games based on the source engine, hell even half life started as basically quake mod so if any company tries to stop it its basically saying "hey this game is completely irrelevant now lol now screw off and play minecraft, doom (1993), G mod or skyrim instead"
Switch modding is also a thing. Which is of course why switchdenuvo now exists presumably, we are doomed xD Heck, it's not even really about modding because people will mod regardless, even if it is made much more difficult. The issue is that the games end up running better for pirates than legitimate customers because the DRM is just bloat. I can remember when Frontiers came out and PC gamers were furious because the game somehow ran worse than the Switch port.
I am not really into modding...but a lot of my friends are, and they're such a good way to keep up game interest. just having us talk and laugh about the game for one more day, one more time...is such a huge win for the game and it's future. Be that a silly character in Risk of Rain 2, a qualty of life fix for Don't Starve. Or an animegirl skin for a survival horror game. But i have greatly enjoyed what little i have experienced of the fan creativity like project 06, and other fangames like sonicGT, and feels like the best way for gaming devs to be made. Banning mods feels like gatekeeping that could choke the industry out if it ever actually succeeds
That's the frickin reason I bought forces twice. Once on the switch as my first 3d sonic game a few years ago, then on my pc a few months ago for the mods
I really don't like mods personally, which is one of the reasons I don't feel left behind as a console player. Too much hassle to make them work, and more often than not, they feel like they don't belong with the rest of the game. But even I can see how important they are to keep the fanbase interested in the franchise.
The only way that you wouldn't like people modding your games past or present is if your games aren't good enough to compete for people's time. But by that logic, they think they aren't making good games in the first place. To me, that sounds like they are just trying to scam us with bad games rather than actually making a good product. It's pretty much whale fishing, but the classic way with a different term I don't know about.
Interesting video! We need to protect mods at all costs. Games really wouldn’t feel the same without them lol. Quite weird that they keep on using Denuvo after all these times
6:45 Funny thing about this, Payday 3 Doesn't have Denovu anymore, they removed it 6 days before launch. Game just has problems and the patch is delayed again and again.
It's so sad that Sega won't make modding easier or have old mods still playable for Sonic x Shadow Generations and instead make it harder and worse to mod because of Denuvo.
One example of a game being carried by mods is Friday Night Funkin. It was a neat little game with great music and personality, but the reason why the community was so big was because it was easy to mod. So many people were able to make banger mods and songs, and it helped especially during the hiatus from 2021 to 2024. I think companies should know that mods help make a game more popular and that they're harmless ways to improve or have fun with a game.
Why do Companies want Denuvo when is universally hated? Well, you said it yourself, to kill modding. Modding provides Free Content, Features, and Bug Fixes that they (Companies and Developers) can add and make themselves, but also put a price tag on it so they get more revenue down the line.
Which... I don't even know is a wise move, considering some of the most popular games have mods that practically keeps it alive and printing money even after so many years
yeah but if they kill modding is like putting a rope in their own necks, less people will purchase their games, consoles, whatever it is, and then they will commit piracy, wether it would be sooner or later, they will
Finally! im not alone with this empty headed decision that denuvo had As someone that has dabbled modding with example sims 3 and minecraft Mods greatly expand games lifespan by adding new stuff, fixing bugs, having quality of life improvements etc etc i dont want seeing modders amaizing work get destroyed
Damn. I may not have played any of the mods... But they were very good and they enhanced the experience and even fix some of the issues in the origignal sonic games.
I don't really mod my games because... idk, it's not really my thing?? plus, I'm kinda dumb and I already see myself fucking up the game LOL. I only mod SRB2/SRB2Kart but because the devs want you to do it! They want you to have fun with anything. I fully support modding games, specially if it was made to fix a broken mess like the Sonic games are sometimes. Banning mods it's stupid asf, let people have fun, let people *enjoy* the game you made... Why are you trying to break your own product just to prevent people from ejoying it more?? Either by adding stuff to play around after you finish the base game or to fix an issue that's bothering you too much... let the mods live.
yeah but nintendo still gives a somewhat constant quality, thats why, even tho they are stupidly ignorant on how to treat their fanbase, they still are successful, but how many more companies can say that? nintendo doesn't depend on mods, but i really can't think on any other case
Getting rid of mods is a stupid and terrible idea that will not only getpeoplemad at denuvo but also make people become murderous angry mob that want to run those denuvo guys out of town or into a rocket that forces them to leave earth forever
just wait till the members on it get doxxed, because im SURE someone with a messed up will get bothered with this, the modding community is big and has all kinds of people, but i think denuvo hasn't noticed that they are but an ant trying to piss off an elephant
@@Nativefall According to the Cambridge dictionary, Momentum is the force or speed of an object in motion. This means if an object is in motion, it has momentum. Since most Sonic games have Sonic moving, they have momentum. And therefore there is no such thing as a "momentumless" Sonic game. The term you're looking for is slope physics ☝️🤓
Concidering the general trends that follow modding or not, I think the main key thing ti understand is that companies don’t want modding BECAUSE it breathes life into the game. With more time invested to a single game, they cannot pump new games and force more money at full price for the same content bought again. In other words, shameless greed :/
The mods are free advertisement. Imagine that somebody makes a mod that is incredible and seems to be a different game, and yet you still have to buy a game in particular in order to play it. People would buy that game so that they can play the mod. I know what I am talking about. In addition to being a Sonic fan, I am a Doom fan and I can tell some Doom players won't play anything that isn't Brutal Doom, which is a mod. Yep, some of them have never played either Doom 1 or 2 as originally intended, they have always used a mod that changes the gameplay drastically and were even disliked by the rest of the Doom community because they tended to complain when a custom map wasn't compatible with Brutal Doom
I've always been under the impression that sega was fine with mods. I thought Denuvo was just to prevent the game from being cracked at launch for sales
whenever I think of modding, I personally think of smash, especially brawl, or in this case, project m, without it, brawl in itself would be the worse smash game ever conceived, not even subspace could carry it, but yea, modding a game is not a threat at all to games as it only makes them live a lot longer than you would expect, like even smash 64 is getting modded and there is 1 mod for the game that is still being played to this day as well as still being updated and that is smash remix, mods like those are the reasons why games are still being played as old as they are and I just don't understand why companies like Nintendo and now sega apparently, are wanting to kill the modding scene, its literally giving a huge middle finger to your own community
