The New DeLorean Alpha5 Is Revealed

It's a crucial time to see which new EV makers are trying to be the next Tesla (scale and, eventually, "affordable" models) vs. ones that want to stay in the boutique realm and, frankly, matter much less to the shape of the industry.

I love this car but can't help but think the Hyundai N Vision 74 looks way more like a modern DeLorean than this actual one.

Hyundai made a Delorean, and Delorean made what I imagined a modern Hyundai would look like.

Its mind boggling why they changed the looks so drastically, kinda feel like a missed opportunity to capitalize on the iconic looks. Good thing is that Hyundai, of all manufacturers, is releasing a OG DeLorean lookalike.

In my honest opinion, the Hyundai Vision 74 looks more like the Delorean than this Delorean itself.

I want to see more of Brian doing this, out of the office showing us new cars.

I think they made a huge mistake by not making it similar to the original delorean design with some modern twist. Hyundai recently launched a car similar to original delorean, it looks so amazing.

Brian is the OG. I remember watching car reviews from him on cnet, over a decade ago. Glad he's still here, and a great video as always!

Hyundai N Vision 74 is more and proper "re-retro" EV. This DeLorean is just another Tesla family van with suicide gull wing door.

So glad to see CNET in my feed I have been a fan since it's inception and would always go to them for tech reviews of something I was interested in.

Does it still need 1.21 Gigawatts for the Flux capacitor?? Or is it more efficient.

Anyone else disappointed with this design after seeing Hyundai's Vision 74? Feels like a blunder to have this design be so far off the original. And not just off, but like having design elements on the opposite side of spectrum. Definitely not a terrible design, but not what I'd pick to reanimate the DMC.

Did they upgrade the Flux Capacitor as well?

Amazing that after so many years and the first one is still just way cooler and better looking. This new one does look good but I just prefer the styling of the older cars.

The review is excellent. The car is beautiful but doesn’t necessarily remind me of the original automobile. I think the Hyundai N concept is a much better iteration. However, the current contact location idea is super creepy.

Would it be safe to say we're in the middle of a car renaissance? The transition from ICE to BEV seems to be allowing car design to flourish once more and reviving beloved memories from the past.

You know a car is special if it can get Cooley to come out of retirement and do a review of it!

I wish it took more design cues from the original. Some neat ideas in there but its just too different from a DeLorean for my tastes. I think the original design already has this retro futuristic look to it, imagine bringing that design into 2022 with updated tech instead of something that looks more like a Porsche.

It's a very nice looking car, just doesn't look like a DeLorean. I think I would have been better if they went the "Porsche route" and did a slow evolution of the original design language from the DMC12 rather than loosely referencing some elements on a car that looks like it could be any brand.

I think he did such an excellent job here. He is genuinely excited which made me (not a vehicle fan) excited as well. This is the type of content I want to see more of.

Nice tech on the inside to match what it represented in the 80s pop culture. The car's shape however doesn't bring that wow factor of when we first saw it. This shape looks like any modern EV out now in the market. Hyundai has done it best by paying respect to the look of the past whilst keeping it modern and fresh with the N74 (Pony Coupe designer, Giugiaro, that also design the DeLorean, inspired by the Pony Coupe) A shame really. What a great opportunity gone to waste. I wish the company a better run at it this time around.

The interior is super cool, but the nose gives me lucid air vibes and the back is very Lexus inspired imo. I’m not loving the outside a ton. It’s kind of boring and not that new besides the cabin width gull wing doors

This is a cool looking car and I would get one if I were rich enough for one, but I do genuinely wish it actually looked like a modernized EV version of the old Delorean instead of this.

DeLorean had a good opportunity to make something truly unique, yet they settled on this design. Something that looks just like any other EV.

Nice presentation and review. The feely, mood ring, gimmicks are fine for marketing fill, but they seem to be more of a distraction from the price tag. Showing off that it is special and unique. My impression is that it is a homage to the Delorean (leveraging off of the Delorean's name and legacy) rather than a descendant. Still, I like the styling and design on its own merits. And it is going to appeal to people to can afford a legacy automaker's performance/luxury EV, but want something cool, and different, without being polarizing.

It looks really cool and futuristic, buy also just like any other modern premium EV 😬

I had no idea that DeLorean was still manufacturing cars. This is exciting.

Aside from the nameplete I would never guess this was supposed to even try look like a deloreon. Tesla truck and Hyundai N Vision did it better.

Unfortunately nothing to do with the iconic distinctive original design...

The reason why Hyundai N Vision 74 looks like the original DeLorean is because N Vision 74 is the remake of 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe that was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro who later, designed the original DeLorean. This is one of the biggest reasons why many DeLorean fans love it. It has a huge connection with the original designer. Now, if it came with gull-wing doors, the transformation would be complete.

The growing trend of phasing out physical switches is horrible. At first I thought it wasn't too bad, but by god does it suck just to change the temp, just to change the volume, or activate my heated seats. I rather have a smaller screen and physical switches for the essentials. Its proven to that more and more people still prefer physical switches over complete touch interfaces.

Hyundai did a better Delorean. This isn't wack, just looks like everything else.

Back to the future

I WANT to like this more. The DMC-12 is my favorite car of all time, even without BTTF. I appreciate the nods to the OG, but this just feels like, because it is, a different company that has the name Delorean. The driver relationship touches, don't seem necessary. The EV future is exciting, I'm all for it. But I would also like to see an active and present EV Conversion industry. I'd love to be able to buy a classic car, and get a comparable/practical EV experience to a modern Tesla or Mach-E.

All I want to know is when does the Dr. Brown edition come out with a flux capacitor?

It’s a good thing they let you choose the dashboard look of the original Delorean, because no other part of the car does! They went so modern with the design, it looks.....generic. I know they included some styling cues, but they’re so subtle, even a lifelong DMC12 enthusiast/fan/absolute fanatic like me would miss them on the first and even second look. This is where aftermarket wheels and body kits are going to become essential to owners. Imagine how awesome it would look with 19 inch versions of the original turbine wheels (and a center cap that simulates the 4 lugs)

Christopher Lloyd can definitely have an update brand new DeLorean. A wonderful car to turn into a time machine 🤣

I love Brian videos by far some of the best content on CNET, tho in terms of the new delorean it just looks like a generic sports car would have much rather seen a modern take of the dmc-12

The Hyundai N Vission has better styling cues that makes it a more successful “new DeLorean”. Not to say this DeLorean Isnt’t nice. It just really looks more like a blen between Tesla and Porsche. To me a DeLorean needs to stand out and not with “here I am” doors that wave to every e when you get out. A DeLorean needs to captivate the audience and push the boundary of the aesthetic in it design. To create trends not follow them. That’s my opinion✌️❤️

I think the wrist band should be the key. Nothings cooler than having the keys to your car on your wrist. If I pick one of these up from the dealership, I’m not gonna give the band to my loved one, I’m gonna wear it myself.

They completely ignored the iconic design of the original. It looks nothing like a DeLorean. Tesla Cybertruck looks more like a DeLorean than this DeLorean.

Im not really a fan of screens. they look outdated. if car companies can figure out a way to modernize analog physical buttons and knobs, even guages. that would be amazing.

Lack of physical buttons is a serious safety issue. Also, this is just another concept car from a startup. They are a dime a dozen.

It's not ugly, but the design just isn't very distinct. The overall silhouette and front end remind me of the Lucid Air or a generic modern sports car. I thought it'd be something like that new Hyundai

All you people complaining that it doesn't look like the original, why should it? An electric car needs fluid lines to move through the air more effortlessly for better range. I for one am glad it doesn't look like the old one, this thing is beautiful. Of course this is all just my opinion, we're all welcome to our own.

What would help ensure success would be Delorean charging stations placed throughout the country. Electric cars will never be mainstream until the infrastructure is built to support them.

I was on the Delorean website,this car is a pretty ambitious project to say the least, it's beautiful, i really hope this car company is successful. I aslo saw what looked like a sport roadster.Unless i win the lottery this car is pretty mutch in line with Lucid,an other beautiful car TESLA is only safe for now because fewer people can't afford a Delorean.

Thanks for the review. Changing infrastructure is definitely one major issue for EV owner considering the current refuel stations for ICE vehicles is achieved through 150 years of upgrades and expansions. I had an opportunity to travel to Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia Canada which is a park with over 310miles/500KM road with many steep mountain roads and two local refuel station for ICE vehicles. When I was there, beside the beautiful views I also I try very deliberately to look for EV vehicles and when I was there, not one was found driven at the park since it would mostly run out of rang half way and will have no place to charge except 120V 20A plugs. The moment I drove out of the part into the city I was able to spot EV with ease again. Buying a vehicle that is environmental friendly yet often can not fully enjoy the beauty of the environment one is trying to save is a very ironic picture. Love my HEV and still believe that the PHEV is the best of the both world for now especially if the manufactures can increase the rang up to 60miles/100KM while decreasing the weight of the battery pack.

Nothing about this says Delorean. Just another electric car.

Hi, Those gull wing doors appear to hesitate then struggle to close completely. Not what I would expect in a high caliber car. Kat Delorian's new version of her dad's Delorian looks much more sleek. Many people don't know that Delorian Motor Company [DMC] is not owned by the Delorian family. John Delorian's "engineer daughter" acquired financial backing and is building an even sleeker version of her late father's legacy beginning in January 2023 in Motor City!

I think Hyundai made a better classic looking DeLorean!! 😄 🤣 😂

It’s not a DeLorean, it’s a new EV with a lot of family wagon digital features! Not only a miss on the design to inherit the original beautiful design but added a bunch of creative digital features that are useless for a car like this. It looks nice and the design is well balanced but what they forget is even back then DeLorean looked like nothing else. My advise is go look at the Ioniq 5, it looks more like a DeLorean SUV than this does to the original car. Actually I think the new Polstar 6 is closer than this. Quite disappointing.

Looks good and great that more companies are building EV. But the real challenges is not building an expensive EV, it is a mass market $30k EV with 400 miles per plug. That's the real issue and no one seems to care about it.

This looks nice but i think Hyundai knocked out of the park with the design of the N Vision 74.

I was looking forward to a successor of the DeLorean, but this ain't it chief. If you think just slapping the name on it and giving it the wing doors is enough, then you're wrong. It doesn't seem to have anything else common with the original. So disappointed.

This doesn’t look like a Delorean at all. I wouldn’t be able to tell if that was a delorean while driving in the streets.

Back to the Future? Really modern and soft lines. Some decades ago I remember the Porsche 928 built 1977. It was an emotional sensation with the look of a moon car. Like the Lamborghini Countach built 1974. A Bertone design dream of the future. Nearly 50 years later Lamborghini found a way of modern and retro elements for the new Countach LPI 800 in 2022. You still recognize the famous emotions of the 70's and 80's. Now I'm missing this emotional touch to the famous DELOREAN, designed by Giugiaro. Hopefully it will be another approach to drive human heart into this digital world. With an emotional design Back to the Future!
