@@iamnid Being $5 isn't an excuse for failing to properly port a 25+ year old game to modern hardware. Especially when amateur homebrew ports far outshine the official version. It's especially disappointing because not only is everything but the resolution worse than the original version, the Steam version of Doom 3 BFG Edition includes Doom 1 & 2 and costs $20, the same total cost of buying all three on console, but lacks ANY of the issues the new ports have. Looks great, sounds great, plays great, and no Bethesda login. If they could get it right years ago, why have they managed to screw it up now? And why do they expect people to pay again for an inferior version? It's just sad, really.

It's not hard at all! Modern Vintage Gamer ported Chocolate Doom to Switch in 45 minutes. He made a video about it and everything! I guarantee his port has more features than the official offering. There's no excuse for such a garbage port.

People always blame Bethesda, but ZeniMax Media are the corporate overlords pulling everyone's strings. They are the ones who own id Software, Arkane, Machine Games as well as Bethesda Game Studios

That's actually not true. I have the have the BFG Edition on PC and it's just as bad. The only thing that's better is the speed of the music but the variable sound effect pitch problem is still very much present and the music instruments sound terrible. The OG Xbox version that comes with the Doom 3 expansion is the best console port of vanilla Doom 1 and 2 even though it still suffers quite a bit with the sound effects variable pitch and the music is still slow but the instruments are much better. There's yet to be a perfect port of vanilla Doom to a console. It's really sad that all of the unofficial ports on PC have been doing it right for well over a decade.

It runs reasonably well most of the time (Doom 3 that is), but you can round a corner into a more geometrically complex area, or look down a long hallway into a room and the framerate really drops (from 60 to 30 or lower depending on where you're looking, which can be pretty jarring) - it's never unplayable mind you, but it's somewhat unstable. At least they patched Doom 1 and 2 and gave them 60 FPS support etc. - the Doom 3 port could use a bit more optimization though.

I got it at launch on PC and it was 🤯 at the time, best version though I played a couple of years ago now was the BFG on PC with the VR mod, if you ever get the chance that's the way, inside the horror is another level.

At the moment there are no comparison video's of Doom 3 on PC and the original Xbox anywhere on RU-vid, no one on RU-vid has made such a video. It would make for a very interesting video because the developers of the original Xbox version of Doom 3 used some clever tricks to bring the game to less capable console hardware.

I mean, you shouldn't be getting anything less than definitive; DOOM has been out for 26 years for christ's sake... how do you fuck it up this bad?

I've actually had people tell me they don't mind paying more for digital versions because they don't have to change a disc 🤦‍♂️ And they won't even be able to trade/lend/sell their games . .

Valve have still not given me a reason to distrust them, I've had Steam from Beta and over the years many games I bought have left the store but i can still download and play them, I just increase HD size too over the years, sat at 32TB and just keep all my games installed so they will always be there in 0 and 1's.

Ignorant. Services like GOG show all-digital works perfectly fine. It's the fact people like you totally miss the problem that allows them to get away with these issues. Bear in mind that whether it's on a CD, cartridge, or your hard drive, it's all the same code. DRM is still found on discs.

It's my favorite version. Online coop was epic. Still play it on back compatibility whenever the mood for Doom 3 strikes me.

I disagree that it runs "almost flawlessly", having played the game for much longer on the switch. It has some really heavy drops to the 40s in many big open areas, and it's pretty annoying in those parts. A sudden sluggishness has cost me many deaths. I've seen single digit frames in an a specific direction in a specific location, which just seems like oversight because that should be impossible for a game this old with hardware this recent. I've played for 5 hours and 33 minutes on my switch till now.

@@Bitches4Day Good point. I have a particular liking for survival horror, and although Doom 3 is not technically a survival horror game, it has many of the traits that are associated with the genre. This is why I think I loved it so much. As you say, it was so innovative for the time and graphically mind blowing when played on a powerful PC. DOOM 3, Fry Cry and Half-life 2 were three great FPS which took up a lot of my time back in 2004.

I think I'd be fine with that, and probably a lot of people, especially when you get further into the game.

XBOXRULES Go back into your troll cave. The Switch-version is fine and totally playable. Yes-yes it's not running Doom 3 in 4K with 240 FPS but since it's just a portable device 720p with around 60 FPS is totally okay. 👍
