THE NEW DRY DROPPER RIG (IMPROVED SYSTEM) | THE "FAS ADD" | SAVE TIME ON THE WATER & CATCH MORE FISH

You better read it and weep folks.. or watch it rather.. because I have made something that will change the fly fishing industry... Okay that's a bit much.. it MIGHT.. If anything it should change the way you look at a "dry-dropper" rig. Adjustable dry dropper rigs can no longer haunt your fish filled dreams. No sir, no ma'am. With equal parts noggin power and sorcery I am conjuring them into your reality.. well and hopefully into your fly box as soon as you watch this video.
I could go on and on about the shortcomings of the "traditional" dry dropper rig. Looking at it objectively and through my own personal experiences.. it has serious limits. They had their time and place without a doubt. But the innovation offered in this video should put that old horse "out to pasture".. so to speak.. From here on out you should never have to wrestle with the archaic nature of this static rig. Days of wasting tippet and time are over.
Not only does my dry dropper system work as an incredibly efficient indicator, it is also a damn dry fly! How often do you get your cake and then actually eat it? It takes the best elements of the "traditional" dry-dropper but then elevates the rig in every other aspect. I have been "prototyping" this rig for well over a year now and I can say without a doubt that this thing works.
I am my own worst critic, I PROMISE. (anything you've got to say won't scratch how I feel about myself.. so kick rocks) I am seldom satisfied with my accomplishments or place in life. That is why I wanted to meticulously research and develop this entire process. I'm not kidding... I put this under a hypercritical microscope as I dragged it through angling hell. This is that one shining moment where I can actually stand behind my idea. An idea that could wildly change the way a lot of folks think about fly fishing. There is nothing complicated about this fly or the rig.
This "bead" & "tube" technique can be applied to ANY dry fly. Of course, when I say "any" I am referring to ANY dry fly you would use in a "traditional" dry dropper rig. (Don't @ me with any stupid #22 midges please) With the low level of intrusion this system brings to the fly, I wouldn't be surprised if the "big boys" start picking this trick up...
To all the R&D teams of the major fly fishing companies, y'all need some help?
‪@orvis‬ ‪@UmpquaFeatherMerchants‬ ‪@SimmsFishingProducts‬ ‪@RIOPRODUCTS‬ ‪@ScientificAnglers‬ ‪@patagonia‬
Old men in tweed, horse hair leaders, and tailing gloves should all be a thing of the past... Static dry dropper rigs will soon be added to that list.
If you have any questions please reach out.

Enjoy.
Material List:
1. Glass Beads
-They come in all colors and sizes. I suggest anything in the range of 2 - 2.8mm.
-This should cover any size hook you use.
-Just know that some glass beads will be shaped differently than others.
2. Tubing
-You can DIY this if you are feeling really bold. (Same dimensions as the beads)
-The stuff that comes in the packs of NZ Strike indicators actually works really well.
(I use the "REGULAR" size)
3. Tippet Rings
-Smaller for small flies.. Bigger for bigger flies.. pretty easy. (Or just use a blood knot)
4. LITERALLY ANYTHING
-Use the same materials from any of your favorite dry fly rigs
-There is nothing special about the two flies tied in this vid

Man, I loved this video. I stopped flying fishing 25 years ago because of the snobbery and elitism. I just got back into it this year and guys like you give me hope that normal people fly fish too. Keep it up!

How do you set the hook if the fish takes the moving dry fly?

I’ve heard rumors of the FASADD for a few months now. Even seen a prototype. Extremely innovative approach to a challenge that has faced fly fishermen since the dry dropper was first employed. Looking forward to trying/tying this setup. Thanks for sharing your genius.

I do a similar thing where I break open a used bic pen and cut a length of the empty ink tube. Tie that onto the hook and then lay the dubbing/foam over it. Peg it with the smallest length of toothpick. This is a lot more polished and the surgical tubing/glass bead anchor system would be a lot gentler on tippet, and lend itself better to smaller flies. Thanks Mike!

I’ve seen one other similar set up, that utilizes a piece of yarn and a blood knot tied that you tie a slidable tag line to the rig, so it’s slightly different. Yours is more streamlined in that it doesn’t use a separate tag line. this is pretty cool man.

Mike, I've been doing something similar for some time now. I take top flies such as a hopper or stimulator, and as I tie them, I tie in a tippet ring using a piece of looped mono at the rear of the fly. I can attach my dropper using another piece of tippet tied to the tippet ring on the top fly. I adjust depth by changing the dropper tippet length using a double surgeon's knot to add tippet, or just nip off material to shorted the dropper. Takes me 30 seconds to add/remove tippet and retie the dropper. I can use tippet as small as 8X with no slipping of the dropper tippet when casting. It is not a sliding system, but it is faster than rebuilding a leader the traditional way and avoids tying a dropper knot to the bend of the top fly. In calmer water, I can see the front of my top fly tip up slightly when a fish takes the dropper. I miss fewer takes that way. My smaller top flies with tippet rings don't have the extra weight of beads and surgical tubing. I use the smaller 2mm and 3mm rings available on ebay. Life and fishing are always a series of trade-offs. Most great thinkers are slightly crazy, you are a great thinker..........

Hey fellas...Chris, I actually use the exact same method as you describe due to not getting away with anything bigger than 5x and had trouble with the dry slipping too much on 5.5x or 6x...But Mike, I like fishing super skinny water this way and need to adjust very often so Im gonna experiment with your system with possibly smaller tubing, my concern is kinking the thin tippet when the fish takes the dry as it slides to the ring but we shall see!! Thanks for the video man and stay Crazy :)

@chrishaberl5780
@chrishaberl5780 2 года назад
@@rjf1877 I put the tippet ring on a short loop of mono and tie the two ends of the loop to the hook shank, adding a drop of super glue first to the hook shank before tying in the loop. The ring on the loop goes back to just past the hook bend.

@@FLYALLSZN You’re a young and inexperienced man if you say something like: “ I don’t need the money!” It never hurts to have some set aside invested and making you money while you sleep. The fishing industry, especially Flyfishing, does not generate a lot of profits. As you said this might be your only genius idea (I doubt that) and most likely you won’t be able to quit your day job. You can also make a hook to slide and hold its position easily with leader alone, I used to make a three hook setup for salmon fishing with a fixed bottom hook and two sliders on the line that hold their position well, used for trolling a bent herring bait. Thanks for your effort and enthusiasm!

Very cool and innovative idea man! Thank you for sharing with the community, I look forward to testing. Some quick questions: 1) So the tippet ring or blood knot is the final "stop" right? 2) Doesn't this mean the fly will still have to slide to this point after the hookup? 3) If so, aren't you losing tension while it's slipping, or losing that critical tension right at hookset?
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 3 года назад
All valid questions! 1. Yes, I have never had a fish pull that fly below the ring or knot. (now I am not saying that is out of the question. I personally have not had it happen) 2. That is why I put the footage in the beginning of the vid. The "Pudding" so to speak. I have never had an issue with it. But I am also quick draw McGraw with the hook set..

Very creative idea, I have wondered about the existence of such a rig. I got a few tied up to try and I was playing around with it a bit. Question, have you noticed issues with setting the hook on the dry,? It would seem that the pressure of the fish will slide it all the way down to the tippet ring/knot delaying the set and possibly missing fish. Awesome idea bro, definitely opened my mind back up to this rig. Also why 2 beads on some?

Cheers for posting Mike ! Only thing i'm confused on is the need/placement of the tippet ring/blood-knot- does this not effectively act as a restriction on how far you can place your dropper/trailing nymph behind the dry? Also, I picked up a leafcutter using your discount code so thanks ! Reckon it'll be one of the few or only Ant rods hitting the UK chalkstreams :). Regards from London. Chris
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 3 года назад
Placement of the tippet ring/blood knot will be right after that second tube slides around those beads. That is why I like to pull that line through to have a decent amount of slack. Once you are there you can run any length of tippet off of the blood knot or tippet ring. Kind of up to you on that one. The UK chalk streams aren't gonna know what hit them! That is so awesome!! Thank you for sharing! And please reach out if you need further explanation on the rigging!
@chrisknox3325
@chrisknox3325 3 года назад
@@FLYALLSZN Thanks Mike- makes sense. Would the trailing nymph not act as a 'stop' to the dry? Will need to give this ago- just thinking if the dry is secure enough to stay in place when casting, but can still be pulled up and down when required, you could do away with the tippet ring/blood-knot (?). Guess worse case scenario, you hook a fish on the dry and it pulls the dry down to the nymph

Very cool idea Mike and I’m in! I’m just not sure I understand the adjustment concept, If I tie on a ring or use a knot below the dry won’t I still need to re-tie my dropper nymph to lengthen or shorten it up? Or, will the tubing keep the dry fly at the place you set it and not slip down while casting.
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN Год назад
The tubing has always kept my flies exactly where they need to be! The tension is just enough to make it happen.

Have you had problems on this setup with missing hooksets on a dry take because the amount the dry has to slide down before it hits the tippet ring acts as too much slack ending up in reduced leverage to dig the hook in?

David Cordova Which clear tubing are you using? What is the diameter of the clear beads you are using? I found 2 mm clear beads at the hobby store. I tied the fly using the 2mm clear beads. Now need clear tubing. I tried using the New Zealand indicator tubing, way to small diameter to slide over the beads.

Hey man really like your videos, and this concept. I’m just curious about the hook up on the dry. Does the fact that it slides affect your hook up? Does that make sense? It’s hard to explain through text, in my mind it would be harder to get a solid hook up since the fly isn’t stationary. Thanks again, hope to hear back.

I wouldn't share it if it didn't work.. See the forest from the trees. You will catch a LOT more fish purely because you are at the proper depth with you dropper. Now add that on top of a dry that i have personally landed some massive fish on.. it solves a lot of my fishing problems.. I see where you might be skeptical but it doesn't hurt my feelings if you use it or not.

@@FLYALLSZN oh I’m definitely gonna tie some up here soon, I’m not skeptical. I’ve seen a lot of proof in your videos, I’ve been a fan for a while. I was actually working the four corners fire while you were out there, super jealous I wasn’t able to cast a line while I was there. I’ll have to try out larger diameter tippet, I was just wondering if the sliding factor affects getting the hook set into the fish at all. Sorry if I worded that weirdly the first time, didn’t mean any kind of negativity. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

Howdy John!! Decoration.. OMFG... That genuinely made me laugh out loud So the orientation goes.. 1 tube threaded on tippet, then tippet threaded through eye of hook, then thread second tube. After that you could be able to slide one tube over the hook eye and the other through the hook shank itself! Then you are in the money!

One of the Orvis guys I know said that he asked Orvis to include the little bracelet making rubber bands with their plastic floats but they said no and gave the reason that they sell more leaders by not including the rubber bands. Now I just use a popper because I'm sick of the fish hitting my float without a hook so I'll have to try this
