The New Face of Trucking - Trucking is constantly evolving and changing, much like any other business. But, there's one highly notable thing about the changes in trucking that have taken place over the past 20 years or so...... that is that few to none of these changes have benefited the truck driver. In this video, Dave gives an overview of how trucking has changed in the past 50 years or so, into what it is today.

Good day Drivers. Thank you for taking the time to catch today's upload. How do you feel about the new face of trucking? Do you feel that the changes over the last few decades have benefited the driver in any way? Are you contented staying with your truck driving job until truck drivers are no longer needed? Love to hear your thoughts.

I drove for 8 yrs . The last job I had video taped me all day with audio . I felt very uneasy about it . Along with the stress , long hours , traffic, and all the other bs I decided to do something else. I started my own landscaping company and my very first week in business I made more money than when I was trucking and in about less than half the time . I wouldn't recommend trucking to anyone looking to get into it . There's way too much bs for what the job pays .

Sir, I am not a truck driver , never will be. But you guys are so respected by me! You're the best drivers on the road, you get it done , backing up these big trucks , in these small spots and you get it done. God bless all of you and stay safe.

I'm a retired teamster. Drove for 31 years, and retired at the age of 54 in 2001, with a nice pension that pays me to this day. My point about the changes is that with the influx of immigrant drivers you cannot trust the driver in any truck. It's gotten very dangerous to even be on the interstate with these driver school graduates.

I agree Dave, rarely does something come out that benefits me, as a tank truck driver. I run tanker in the Alberta oil patch. In the last 5 years I now have 3 Apps on my phone that I MUST use every single load. Before I load I have to go into all 3 apps, punch in all the info they want, after I'm loaded, same thing, go into all 3 apps. 7 hours later when I get to where I unload, go into all 3 Apps again, after unloading, yup, you guessed it, go into those Apps again. All of this has added 2 hours on to my day. The company loves it because they were able to get rid of 2 office jobs, passing their work unto us, the drivers.

Well said Dave, 100% the truth. its a sad state of affairs the way the industry has turned into. I ask myself every week why did us drivers just sit back and let this happen??? The ATA is not your friend. The trucking industry in some part did this to themselves, companies should of offered more in house training and mentoring to produce better qualified safe drivers out on the road and where is the incentive to attract new drivers that want to work to replace retiring drivers....oh and BTW the old truck still has a great shine on it not bad for a 17 year old truck

Have been a owner opp or worked for an owner opp, since 89. The trucking industry used to be fun, no pressure, stop when you needed, etcetera. Now days it's way to micro managed. Absolutely zero comurity. Hell, most driver's won't speak to you at the fuel island. SAD!!!

I started in 82 being mentored by my buddy's parents ( a husband and wife team). He taught 4 of us to drive and the etiquette of the road. We worked hard kept our trucks and ourselves clean and respectful. Never drove past a drive in need without lending a hand. We made a good living for quite a while but things started to change. Drivers lost respect for everyone and themselves. Trashed everything they came in contact with and made a mockery out of a once proud and respected industry. Can't find parking anywhere. No good places to eat and shower. Always felt unsafe from the 2000's on till now. I'm glad I got out around 2010 and finished my working life doing something else. Thought I would never see what has happened to our industry but Pop ( my mentor) warned us what was coming. Damn was he right.

I started driving in 1978 and spent a lot of time learning the ropes. I ran grain locally for a few years then went out over the road and eventually became an owner/operator. I loved my job and the people too. The other drivers were my family away from home and we enjoyed a brotherhood that will never be duplicated. I eventually went back to being a company driver which does have some advantages. I've been out here now for 44 years and I've seen a lot of change. Some of it good, but most of it not so much. I've got three years left until I retire and I cannot wait to pull the parking brake button for the last time. I already miss trucking the way it used to be, but I won't miss this mess we have now. Thanks for the great videos.

I still love being an owner operator but, unlike 10 or 20 years ago, I'm looking forward to retirement. In January 2024, my 2006 Classic XL will be sent off to be converted into the biggest, baddest motorhome on the road. My wife and I will be in our mid 50s so, hopefully, we'll still have plenty of time to enjoy ourselves.

I guess I'm a dinosaur with having been trained as an heavy equipment operator in the seabees. I've lived in many areas of the country, because with this choice of career path. Yes the 90s trucking was the last of the old school trucking culture, and I'm glad to have experienced it without cellphones. We got through the late hours on the road with the c.b. radio while reading every newspaper of the regions we traveled through. It's not dead. (trucking industry)It's changed. Embrace the challenges to make the industry better. I'm an optimist. 10-4

One problem has been the influx of foreign drivers. They bring their driving habits with them, much as I would if I moved to a foreign country. Social issues also come into play, affecting, sometimes, the way a driver may act in certain situations. I drive hazmat loads nowadays, but a long ...long time ago I was in EMS in Southern California, and have seen things I wish I hadn't. It affects the way I operate, clean, courteous, and try to be safe on the road. I don't ever want to be responsible for the loss of anybody's loved ones.

You put a lot of thought into this video, and hit on some really key points. It's such a shame the industry has followed the path you explained and sunk to the level it is currently at. I remember being taught that you ALWAYS give the trucker a break when he needs to turn or is merging, and that value just isn't there today.....although I still let the big rigs have right of way. Great vid... thanks for your common sense insights to the trucking world.

I have always loved driving and being on the open road, and I thought that could be the seed of a career in trucking - - BUT - - every time I have taken a serious look at it (at least a half-dozen times over the years) it always came down to the same thing: TOO MANY SACRIFICES you have to make in exchange for FAR TOO SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY. Yes, I know there are some "good" i.e.- good paying, "cushy" drop-and-hook jobs within the industry, but a lot of that comes down to "who-you-know" ~ OR ~ being in the 'right-place-at-the-right-time' and I just didn't have those connections. Best of luck to all of you out there!

They have cameras, lane assist warnings, automatic braking, and alarms when any of those things activate. I immediately disconnected everything I could get away with. The only thing left is the camera and thats all I'm willing to drive with. I don't understand why companies will hire people if they don't trust us to do the job. It just pushes the good drivers into other careers

Outstanding little history, and that's coming from a historian. The decline of trucking is a microcosm of the decline of middle-class jobs in general since deregulation and supply-side policies began in the Reagan 80s and was adopted by the Democrats under Clinton. We all voted for the people who deregulated the economy and we all grew sour on our unions and the results were not good. I especially liked your analysis of the decline of solidarity among truckers: without communication (CBs and a common language), the press (the magazine) and the union, there is no glue holding truckers together any longer, so how are they supposed to fight these changes? Automation will put most of us out of work, including the history professors, who are being replaced with videos.

Railroads pay FAR better than trucking does and driving a truck is more laborious than operating a locomotive. Plus you're home every other day in railroading. Too much micro managing and too much safety nonsense is why trucking industry is short of drivers as well as the lousy pay. Trucking companies furnish small sleeper, low governed trucks, and expect drivers to be content and to be on time with slow governed trucks. Ridiculous!

Pay can mean more than just money, such as paid time off (food delivery companies typically give 3 weeks PTO, why not OTR too?) paid holidays, meal allowance (the actual reason per diem was invented), hotel stays if a driver is ill, and parking. Nice to here from you Dave and remember your neighbors out on the open road!
