A Gold Wing is more than a collection of parts. Any company can copy the parts and put it together. But that doesn't mean that the parts are functionally identical or made to the same height standards. Nor does it mean that the company will stand behind their product, and fix any issues that may arise. Just because you copy a product and you make improvements on that "copy" doesn't mean that it is superior than the original.
GWM Suo S2000 has no similar or identical parts to Honda Gold Wing, GWM have patented of all their parts, they look identical but there is no copycat parts
copying is much have bigger chances to become much more superior than original and it is proven to BYD YangWang U8 SUV that looks identical to Land Rover Defender but have so much more specs and features
Metallurgy is probably the worst in comparison. However that is cheap China. There is non cheap, on the verge of competing on the higher levels of production vehicles be it cars or bikes. The fact that they do copy worldwide brands flagship models should be addressed legally I'd think?
I have lived in Iraq for the last 8 years and there are Great Wall trucks everywhere. They are absolute crap. I wouldn't touch that thing with a 100 foot pole.
The owner of a Goldwing is not only the owner of a motorcycle, the Goldwing is a legend, it is recognition, it is a personality, it is a career, it is trust, it is 50 years of evolution. All this cannot be supplanted by a nice screen and a bigger engine.
@@Visionery1it instantly revolutionized motorcycling. When the gold wing came out, nobody said it was Chinese crap. Everyone was immediately blown away with the build quality and specs, like with any Japanese motorcycle manufacturer.
@@thagingerninjer5391 when the first cars arrived from Japan in the 50s everybody responded exactly as they do now with Chinese cars and bikes, they also had their fair share of failure. Chinese cars are increasingly taking over the roads in South Africa, if they were crap, word would soon get out. Why would bikes be any different, they've had enough time to eye the competition. It's phenomenal what has happened in China the past 10-20 years in the fields of technology, engineering, construction, roads, rail etc. I'm looking forward to an unbiased road test of this huge Chinese 'Gold Wing'.
I really make an effort, but we are overwhelmed with China crap. On many things, just no other choice except do without. Our Politicians could have done much better for decades. They made lots of money.
@@totzinfo 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ You must work for China, or need glasses. I’ll bet you’d say the same about Chinese Destroyers which incredibly are identical to USN Destroyers..
how come it's a knock off from Honda Goldwing when it is a Flat 8 cylinder while Goldwing is only Flat 6, Dual overhead Camshaft while Goldwing is only Single overhead Camshaft, 2,000 c.c. engine size capacity wile Goldwing is only 1800 c.c. engine size capacity, 12 dual clutch gears transmission while Goldwing is only 8 dual clutch gears and many more features not found in Honda Goldwing
No thanks. I'm not interested in their cars or motorcycles. And if they stole Honda IP to make this bike, then it shouldn't be allowed in any country that obeys intellectual property laws.
As an Australian I’m very used to American corporations stealing our IP. Your entire patent and copyright systems are corrupt and broken. It was American courts who allowed Apple to patent a rectangle with rounded corners, your courts that allowed a photographer to “own” any image photographed against a black background. Used by everyone for decades but your courts recognised his “rights”. Can’t blame the Chinese from giving Western corporations a bit of karma. On a related note GWM cars and trucks are excellent and very popular down under. Chinese companies bother us much less than the decades we spent enduring overpriced under-featured crap from GM and Ford. Great Wall (GWM) may well have reverse engineered this bike. But the next one will be all theirs, just as happened with their cars.
I will give it a couple of years to see how it will hold up! But Honda better get its shit together with all the recalls and other little problems they have with there motorcycles. There not what they use to be!!!
@@stevezodiac575thier. As my 2nd grade teacher drilled us tots in '82. I before e except after c or names. Not a fun teacher! YT spell check wrong too.
GWM has already large network of dealership globally, because they are not making only motorcycles but also EV cars, SUVs, and heavy construction and mining equipments
Wrong, I own a 97 1500 SE.. I love in central Missouri and not 1 fucking dealer within 200 mile raidius will even change the fucking oil on it. They only have support for their newer $ 30,000 dollar bikes...
Every dealership I've called looking for service wouldn't work on anything more than 10 years old unless it was just tires. Independent shops that's a different story.
Comparing apples to oranges. Just like old cars, you have to find an independent motorcycle mechanics willing to work on old Goldwings if you cannot address a problem. I have a 1999 Aspencade and I found such a business less than 20 minutes from where I live. Honda has dealerships and service facilities across the US for newer generation motorcycles, which was the point of my comment. Where is one for this bike?
Unfortunately in Australia we have Great wall. I am a mechanic so to say i will NEVER buy a vehicle built by GW .. They are terrible complete with Extremely poor materials used in the manufacture of them. dont get me wrong they come with all the bells and whistles but thats it. the longest we had to wait for an engine mount a consumable part is 3 months. not weeks months. dont do it
That's because Harleys parts are cast form steel melted inside active volcano, and forged with bare hands. Then they place parts on the gravestone of Arthur Davidson and waiting for full moon so Arthur can bless those parts with his spirit. That's takes time
@@chrisvader2630 And don’t forget, it’s all done under the Global Trade Support of Thailand, Brazil, China and Taiwan manufacturing and sealed with nice hefty made in America (but it’s mostly not) price tag. God bless HD.
Thanks for the heads up, I'm sure the will get to the UK at some point but I wouldn't trust something this complex to anyone but Honda! It would be interesting to find out how much though.
I’m retired and enjoy restoring older Honda motorcycles from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. I bought my first Honda in 1968 and have owned 35 Hondas since then. Honda is known for great design and great manufacturing that results in quality products. Although I do see more quality products coming out of China than I saw in the past, in general Chinese companies are still known for copying rather than innovating, and for very shoddy quality in manufacturing. I’m guessing 5 years from now I will still be looking for my first sighting of one of these Chinese “Goldwing” bikes on a US road.
Wow… restoring old gold wings, what an amazing hobby. I would love it if you started a RU-vid channel and just told us Goldwing stories. You would make a fortune and never have to leave your coach.
Well, to be fair, the resale value of modern European cars is not exactly something to celebrate either, you lose thousands as you drive off the showroom floor.
@@Visionery1 Perhaps so, but at least they support their products. And more to the point the people buying them are not exactly worried about the cost. FYI. They buy them for the superior engineering (cough, cough, cough)
“There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey. It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.” John Ruskin
Gold Wing has always had one thing going for it that made it the touring bike to have. Reliability. A 30 year old GL1500 will take you across the country with one carb working and everyone knows it because it's been done. Not sure I want to be stuck in a corn field in Iowa waiting for Hong Kong Phooey to come and fix my bike. I'll wait but if it turns out to be a better bike than the Honda, that's on them.
My 30-year-old Aspi took 70-year-old me from Heidelberg, Germany to Kyiv, Ukraine last March. 2000 km, some of the worst roads you will see, many traffic control posts, soldiers, etc. Never faltered, and still drew admiring smiles.
as a 2018 dct tour glowing owner I would NOT consider buying this bike.BUT I do think that honda should use an all digital dash and maybe add some safety features such as blind spot monitoring
it's all about Kasin Engineering..my 1976 parts list can still be ordered from Honda Japan. in the year 2102 will you be able to order parts for it? how is the build quality?
Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki used to be competition to the Goldwing and they all failed to dominate. Perhaps Honda has not remained competitive without competition that isn’t V-twin powered, but I doubt it. The new wing has an alternative front end and it has lost weight. Some don’t appreciate that, but they seem to continue to sell pretty well for such an expensive bike. One wonders what the upper limit of weight is on a motorcycle when suspension and tires are considered. The 8 cylinder will add length that won’t necessarily add to rider and passenger space and will contribute to turning radius. It will be interesting to see, but even if the warranty is 10 years, what good is it if you breakdown in the middle is nowhere and parts aren’t available and there isn’t a dealer within 500 miles?
@@fredtracy3931I liked the 1200 and 1300 Ventures. It was pretty cool that the engine was similar to the engine in the Vmax. I was in high school and wasn’t really interested in them and couldn’t begin to afford one. For some reason, it always seemed like the reviews put the Goldwing on top. Perhaps it was due to the advertising in the magazine. I still don’t feel like I could afford a Goldwing even if I wanted one. They are in new car territory for me.
@@alanhassall I was 17 when Suzuki released the Cavalcade 1400 in 1985, and I remember the Kawasaki Voyager 1300 being called the Texas moped, on the cover of Cycle World. :)
@@carbonarrow7 Tell me, what is not made in China, these days? Even American flags are made there, PLEASE! LOL. You want me to change the world? I am too tiny for that.
It's cute on the showroom floor, but how does it ride? How is the quality control? Operating costs? Parts availability? Don't get too enthused until we find out if this is just more Chinese "Tofu-dregs" . . .
I don’t think Honda has anything to worry about! The Chinese are notorious for building things using substandard materials! Their engineering falls way short of the Japanese! I wouldn’t spend money on something that doesn’t have the reliability that Japanese products do!
Not posting that from an iphone, I presume? There is a lot of very high quality stuff coming out of China over the last 10+ years. But I would not knowingly support any company that steals IP so blatantly. Not for me, even if the quality is fantastic.
@@barrytimm5497 It is a difference...An Iphone is a American company that ALREADY have the engineering, design, materials etc. to make the phone and China just mass reproduce it... vs The whole Product engineering, design, concept, quality etc. from start to finish being Chinese... It is a huge difference China simply mass produce products from American companies they not the engineering and development team from Apple and other non-Chinese companies. The issue is with CHINESE COMPANY PRODUCTS
@@truthiscensored Actually, Apple only partially designs the iPhone. They provide their UI requirements, styling designs, key component selections, performance expectations, etc, etc to Foxconn and Foxconn does much of the detailed design and the majority of the iPhone range manufacturing in Zhengzhou, China. Foxconn is, of course, the world's biggest contract electronics manufacturer. But my point is that China can and does build a lot of quality items, in addition to the junk they mass produce. It's no longer as easy as saying, "Well it's from China, so it must be junk!" There is context needed now....
I'm sure some people would buy them, but without a good dealer network, technicians to work on them, and parts supply, it wouldn't be worth the purchase price no matter if it is less than a Goldwing.
No, even if the bike was fantastic. The company making it has no infrastructure (dealerships, repair shops , parts ) here in the USA. Also, you don't know if it's reliable.
Same as others, reliability and service will be the big question that only time or an outstanding execution would tell. Wonder if they did when Honda designed the GL1500 subjected to extreme testing for design validation, and still many issues had to be addressed over time. China has come long way, but great companies take years to build respect, trust and reputation on consumers eyes 👍🏼
Heck no! No Chicomm junk for me. I know that we import a ton of Chinese made items. Most out of our individual control. But, just like everything else engineered by others, they just copied Japanese greatness. I will continue to buy Honda quality for my riding needs and desires.
Well, they have no plans to sell it outside China as far as I know. It would be interesting to see it actually reviewed by some western outlet just to see what level of quality they can reach vs arguably the best motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Honda is so good that people consider them almost boring... because the quality is so high. And this is coming from a Triumph rider.
How about a 1000cc 650lb bike with all the touring gear that is as comfortable but gets 50MPG two up at 80MPH? 8 speeds? Something new that isn't BIGGER and HEAVIER... {!-{>
Hope you are enjoying your flying interest. I have owned my GL 1500 sine 2000. I built my velocity aircraft in 1991. Still enjoy flying this canard aircraft.
As a Bulgarian where GreatWall made a factory to make their Isuzu copy cars (with actual Isuzu engines) They break the stigma of "Cinese made". Also currentday Volvo is owned and built in China too so why complain so much?
bought the 1st Goldwing a blue 1975 and fell in love , have had them all owning a 14 GL1800 Valkyrie now 750 Lbs wet. I am too old to handle another 250+ Lbs and no one makes a better bike than Honda .
???'s Quality of all components, for wear, corrosion resistance and electronics ... + all factors such as 'lean-angles', braking, acceleration and stability etc.
I am loyal to Honda since high school in the 1980,s. Honda cars ,motorcycles, lawn mowers. In my opinion nothing is better . My daily bike is a Gl1100 made in 1983 and it runs perfect.
My take away on this development that this is actually great news for the luxury touring motorcycle market that Great Wall has invested in this market segment. As Honda did in the 1970s, I figure that G.W. will use their 1st ever motorcycle to build their auto network here in the U.S.
I would be happy to test it here in New Zealand, I do about 20k km per year on two wheels, and will be looking for my next bike shortly, either another Harley Ultra, an Indian Pursuit or a Gold Wing, haven't decided yet. But I don't think I would be splashing out big money for an unknown bike with no bike brand history, or sales and parts local portal. Don't get me wrong, it ticks every box I want for my next bike, but its got a lot to prove, including reliability and construction/parts quality before I put 2000cc between my legs and twist the throttle hard. Im guessing pricing would have to be 2/3 of the Gold wing to even get me to look at one. So its a wait and see for me
When the new Goldwing went smaller people like me over 6 foot is extremely uncomfortable. The passenger seat comfort has many complaints. I have the 1800 '06. So I'm out buying future Goldwing's. Now I will buy the BMW grand America. This may be a possibility.
The weight is a big turn off for me. I love my GW but one of the biggest improvements I would love to see is some reduction of weight so I don’t worry constantly as much about dropping it 😀
China bashing aside. I live in Australia & the problem with Chinese road bikes over here is, no major bike shop will work on them. I owned a Chinese road bike & had to do any work myself (which wasn’t a bad thing in the end) That bike looks incredibly complicated, so who services them outside of China…that would be my question.
In 2001, Honda came out with a slimmer GL 1800 than the previous GL1500 and in 2018 Honda did it again with an even slimmer GL1800. The market seems to be leaning more towards sport touring than a huge barge. Time will tell.
my very first bike I learnt to ride on was an 81 Goldwing every bike I have ever had was a Goldwing . i doubt that this will change for me .. its a good looking bike ..will be interesting to see how it survives. Thanks for sharing
my humble thoughts: Honda could be more than capable to make a 8 cylinder engine, if they didn't made it there are good technical reasons probably. On the other side, i love the concept of a huge 2000cc 8 cylinder, that would be my dream new Gw in place of that shrinked up 2018 model. Said that, my only concern about hyper touring bikes is reliability, if the bike will be up to my expectations i'll be happy to buy one.
Disagree on your more cylinders is better viewpoint. Case in point is Kawasaki's history with the Luxo-tourer segment whereas brand-K started out with the 6-cylinder Voyager 13. Then downsize & lighten with the 4-cylinder Voyager 12 model. And finally settling into Kawasaki's longest iteration of the Voyager with a 1700cc V-twin.
@nelsonphilip4520 . And NONE of the Kawasakis you listed were ever real competition for the Goldwing, so your point is invalid. This Chinese tourer is marketed for the "bigger is better" American buyer. Aimed right at the Goldwing at a time when it has lost its touring roots, with tiny luggage and fuel capacity compared to older Goldwings of the past.
@@nunya9555Agree! Although I feel it's better said that in spite of Kawasaki's best efforts to compete with the Honda Gold Wing, they failed first with their fuel injected 6 cylinder and then with their simpler, lighter, and more affordable 4 cylinder Voyager 12. So Kawasaki switch targets focusing in on H-D by developing a V-Twin Voyager to compete against the the Steet Glide & Road Glide where they continue to languish.
I hope the aftermarkets get bigger soon! Now I'm salivating over the classic GL's I saw at shows in the 90's. Which as I understand it, are extremely difficult to support these days.
The Goldwing is a well established marque, and difficult to argue with the Japanese company’s credit to date, as they’ve been building them for about 20yrs, and have a reputation to uphold. I could be tempted with this ‘version’ but I’d probably only go for it on a PPP purchase arrangement over 2 yrs. These could possibly be considered for a Pan-Am m/cycle hire business……
You said "they made it better". One of the best things about Goldwing motorcycle is longevity and reliability. This new motorcycle did not proved itself like Honda Goldwing, so how can you say something like that?
I’ve seen some excellent Chinese bikes in recent years - high quality, high performance and really well spec’d. I wouldn’t dismiss this out of hand, as many commenters here have done, this could be a very good bike. I look forward to seeing it.
I ride a 1991 GL1500 Goldwing and was a motorcycle mechanic for many years and I would really like to ride that monster to see if it is as cheezy as alot of Chinese stuff is .
Great Wall have been producing and selling trucks and SUVs here un my country a lot, and quality has been improved over the last years. The final product may be as good as the GW at the beggining (first 3 years), but I don´t see it getting older as good as the Honda. Do not expect it to last 30 years trouble free, but if you are looking to have for 3 to 5 years, itps definitely an option.
Maintenance will be an issue. Honda has a great rep and shops EVERYWHERE! This bike…will be slow starting as far as repeatable shops go. Having trouble on a trip with a Honda, no prob! The next town has a shop. Having trouble on a trip with this bike, you’re dead in the water. Maybe in a decade or two it might be different, but now, “dance with the one what brung ya!” HONDA.
I just visited an Australian dealer to see the prices of their pickups. I am not sure what tariffs or whatnot might be included but they don't seem so cheap to me.
I’m excited about it and I think it’s neat! But I’ve never owned (and don’t feel the need to own) a goldwing that’s less than 3 decades old and costs more than a months rent to buy. So maybe if I’m still alive in 30 years and the s2000 makes it that long on the road… THEN I’ll consider one 😂
Wow, a 1000lb touring bike...who wants a 1000lb motorcycle. Honda and BMW made great efforts to lighten their touring motorcycles. The current Gold Wing Tour is nearly 90lbs lighter than the old model and that was a hugh upgrade over the old model...you can feel the weight loss as soon as you swing your leg over the seat...everything with the motorcycle is better with less weight. I can't imagine riding a heavier touring bike than my current Gold Wing..I wish Honda could make it even lighter
I have a 84 goldwing 1200 Aspen and it's the best all around bike I've had. Would love to see another company release a similar bike. Would make great corporate competition which usually means lower prices and better bikes all around. 🤙🤙Id ride one to see what the hype is about.
Hopefully this gets HONDA off their butts to give us the upgrades We have been begging them for years now. More horsepower and a faster bike. Touchscreen and better software to go with it. Better, Bluetooth integration and home link. Give us a better stereo system that rocks and a more comfortable adjustable seat where the heat actually works and the heated grips don’t stop working in a couple of years. Last but not least, how about some more color options? Why can’t I get the touring model in the same color as the bagger version? Quit the BS Honda. Give us what we have been asking for! Don’t force us to buy from your competitor.
My 2013 GL1800 has never let me down, I have no issue taking my bike anywhere in this country with no limits on mileage, in all sorts of weather (except snow). Would I trust a Chinese copy to live up to this standard? Absolutely not. Let the other guy be the test subject for this copycat bike.
I wouldn’t own a dct motorcycle. There is too much lag between throttle and power response to the rear wheel which will result in you dumping your bike in low speed turning maneuvers.
And who is going to fix it when it breaks? People love and hate Harley but getting service and maintenance at their dealerships is relatively convenient.
Well, I guess if it's cheap enough you could buy two so as to hopefully keep one running. Use the spare to cannibalize parts from. Or maybe put a tow bar on it and take both for a ride. Lots of choices. to me, China means cheap and low quality. You shouldn't even use Gold Wing in the same sentence with China made bike.
