I just started playing bass recently but haven't practiced in a while and just watching these bassists ie Bootsy, Geddy Lee, Jaco, Clarke, and Claypool makes me want to practice again
@@chillbro2275 Hendrix performed as a backing musician for various soul, R&B, and blues musicians, including Wilson Pickett, Slim Harpo, Sam Cooke, Ike & Tina Turner] and Jackie Wilson.
Every time I listen to Sex Machine that was recorded with Bootsy and his brother Catfish and Jabo, that has to be the funkiest funk cut I ever heard! If you don't believe me play it now!!!
They are nylon tape wound strings, they were so that the bass would have a short "Thud" sound, aping the sound of an upright bass. Many basses also came with a piece of foam under the bridge cover, killing sustain even more.
The band with Bootsy and his Brother Catfish was good but the band that had Jimmy Nolan was TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT and more disciplined musically.Just my opinion being a professional musician who had played in a band when I was a teenager with drummer Nat Kendricks and two of the earlier horn players from James Brown band that played on the song the Mashed Potatoes.
Bootsy got fired because he was tripping off acid on stage he thought his bass had turnt into a snake so he threw it down and ran off the stage the whole band got fired. Yes they got J.B. high but he didn't know he was high. It's a funny story as told by Bootsy. Just to hear that laugh tells me that ,that's one crazy cool dude
Bootsy didn't "leave" JB because of "money". From Bootsy's own mouth it was because of drugs. Specifically, Bootsy said that one night before a show he took acid (LSD) and was on stage tripping. He thought his bass had turned into a snake so he threw it down and ran off stage.
That was Bootsy's memory though. He said it himself on Mike Judge's show that it "might not be that accurate because he was very high." haha so who knows
@@guitarsANDcars39 yea Bootsy switched up his stories a lot. On the Mike Judge thing he said James fired all of the young guns (Catfish, Waddy, Bootsy) because he asked for a raise on their behalf. James sent them back to Ohio
Me and my two brothers was influenced to Funk playing in the early 70s by the Jbs and Boosty and came very good to where a producer came to visit us to our mother to give us an audition she said no
The only inaudible part to me was his line "at that time Bootsy was ...playing bass faster than anyone else." -- I think -- and I'm a native speaker who had to replay it 3x. That lone sentence was completely unintelligible without re-listening.
Anyone not aware This IS the paris 71 concert on Love Power and Peace Album released a few years ago and its definitve I reckon ,that and Revoloution of the mind.
fromthesidelines23 dancing in the street make it funky BBC. the bible of funk documentaries if u like this and u haven't seen it u will love it. Afterwards u will probably go and spontaneously start a funk band and not know why u did it. the funk gets in your bones, your soul and makes u go ONE>>>>>>>One>>>>>>>>one.............
When people are gifted like Jimi Hendrix, Bootsy Collins and Jaco Pastorios, you either appreciate them or get out of their way.. You can't control those people and envy always backfires too..
Yall say this is the concert from which Love Power Peace came but I don't remember Bootsy being given a solo or break like on this video, I have to check it out again. Then again I've heard that Love Power Peace doesn't include every performance from that concert so idk
Gotta be honest, Bootsy’s looks improved with age! Goodness! His early days were a bit rough especially when playing on a song about a driving sex machine. But his playing overshadowed that feature. And with age, WOW!!! Most folks grow old, especially in their facial features. But Bootsy has done that Benjamin Button thing! This Bro got better with age! BAM!!!👊🏾
Yeah pretty much! Bootsy said during a particular show he had gotten more applause from the crowd than James. James noticed it & after the show was over he tried to put Bootsy down.....
James Brown knew Bootsy was bad. He didn't wanna admit it! In my opinion Bootsy took James Brown's music to a level that the Godfather himself couldn't take it. It's a shame this version of James Brown's JB's only lasted for about a year, because this by far was his best band. James Brown did Bootsy a favor by firing him, because Bootsy was able to take the "the one" theory he learned from James over to George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic & succeed.....
@@Charles-tt3dryou might have not heard of the james brown orchestra in late 60s!! The basic funk was there. i mean he always had great bands through years, but the James brown orchestra was the best with Clyde, Maceo, Jabo, Pee Wee, Jimmy, Bernard and others.
Bootsy upstage James Brown ??? Give me a f****** break !!! Chuck Berry , and Jackie Wilson couldn't upstage James Brown ! As a matter of fact , I'm pretty damn comfortable saying that in his prime , nobody could upstage him . If anybody begs to differ , by all means , state your case !!!
Cedric Young you took it the wrong way. He said it the wrong way. But you have to understand what he meant. He meant that James didnt want ANYONE who will even challenge his status. He wants to be the front, top, all around guy. Anyone else starting to grt more fame, in HIS band, was a threat. That probably lead to a lot of arguments etc. And remember these people lived a life AFTER concerts. If his band mates were sitting around talking about who got the "juice"...flare...talent...funk whatever. And they're talking a little bit too much about a person that's NOT james brown, then that probably had an influence as well. Complimenting Bootsy a bit too much, from James point of view at least. Basically, they saw his potential before we were able to experience it. And that normally happens with a group who's always around each other. So..YOU may not have seen anytning much. But YOU weren't with them on stage, behind scenes, traveling, in their personal lives, etc
The Wicked PICKET gave J.B a run for his money. Wilson Picket was a funky soul singer and a better singer. They both gave you your money worth. Paid to see both and dont regret it.
That's not true. Fred Wesley goes back and forth in complimenting and criticizing James Brown. There is no comparison with ANYONE to James Brown. James Brown CREATED funk. The others were just talentedmusicians who he used to get his ideas out.
That's the way it was back then... James Brown was the most selfish and difficult singers to work with... Over rated and incredibly greedy, everything he touched because cursed...
