I’m with you on the LUFS templates. Even if you make individual masters, most distribution partners like Distrokid, etc. only accept 1 file for a track, and then they distribute to all those stores, so you can’t use multiples any way
@MarcosRobertoDosSantosJF
@MarcosRobertoDosSantosJF 2 года назад
Exactly. It is impossible for a regular music producer to individualize mastering for every streaming and download service. I don't know if huge artists can have it, but regular mortals can't.
@TheTyHiggins
@TheTyHiggins 2 года назад
I was thinking the same thing! Do you recommend a general target for uploading to these distributers?
@dustystewart430
@dustystewart430 Год назад
You make a solid point about LUFS levels when using distribution services like Distrokid, CDBaby, etc. They’re not going to separate audio files with different LUFS relative to the various services and those service’s different loudness criteria. One would think that by now, the different streaming and DL services would have all landed on the same loudness (and peak) criteria, but, they haven’t, at least as of this writing. My approach to this, (whether it’s the right approach or not remains to be seen) is to first craft a mix that has a healthy perceived loudness, (while still maintaining nice dynamics) and then shooting for a “general” integrated LUFS of between -12dB to -10dB, (with a true peak of -1dB); and while I know that’s hotter than the -14db to -16db LUFS that streaming services such as Spotify want, I’d rather have them turn the loudness DOWN to where it’s acceptable to them, as that doesn’t (or shouldn’t) involve changing the dynamic range or the limiting that I used on the original mix…as opposed to sending them something that their algorithm decides to turn UP, as that would have to involve the use of a limiter, which I’m sure is an automated process that could (and very likely would) change the sonics of the mix entirely, in ways that I wouldn’t want. I like all the Sonible plugs I have (Smart Comp, EQ, Limiter) as I think they get me to where I want to be in a mix a lot faster, and, I love how they’re processing can be as transparent or colored as I desire. FWIW 😊

I just got this. I have been using Sonnox Oxford limiter and I think it's awesome. David quick question, do you have a hardware limiter? If not what's your go to plugin? Thanks for the dope content as always. You are helping engineers like me in Africa who don't have access to hardware gear.
@mixbustv

Brickwall limiters were born digital for a reason, because you can't really do it in the analog world, so no I don't. But, mastering converters can be used as analog clippers, hence my Dangerous AD+. For my final limiting is always a combination of various things, clipping converters, saturators, various limiters.. you can see many examples in the mastering courses for members here.

David, what you do think about how spectral limiters like smart:limit and Elevate tend to work their transparency magic (even under extreme push) by robbing the lowest FFT bins in the sub region? At least with Elevate you can force the limiter to put back some of the sub energy (by using the EQ section), but as you noted, the corner frequency of the "Bass" control in smart:limit is currently set too high to bring back any real sub energy that is stolen from. You can test this by using both limiters on very sub-bass heavy music.
@coliny7027
@coliny7027 2 года назад
dude how do you figure these things out lmao! good to see you in here. Do you have a preference between this and Newfangled Elevate? both have different applications, but what you just described made tons of sense bc when I reeeallly drive my experimental bass tracks into either, the bass gets all wonky.
@Baphometrix
@Baphometrix 2 года назад
@@coliny7027 I tend to get all my loudness in the mix itself (by careful control of the crest factor throughout the entire project), so honestly I don't work Mastering Limiters hard enough to make any of them sound significantly different from each other. The big differences come into play only when you ask them to do a large amount of gain reduction. They all "crack under the stress" in different ways.

Thanks for confirming the uselessness of the bass boost. I agree with everything you said. FYI-There is a discounted bundle that includes limiter, comp, eq, gate and reverb. I think it was $190 US tax included. The reverb seems to be quite transparent without stepping on the source material. The comp is susceptible to breathing when using expansion but with care beautifully opens up over compressed material giving it room to breathe. I’m still learning about these tools but they do things that no other tools do. I was hoping for more out of the spectral tools but very happy to have them.

I wonder why the "attack" is not called "hold" or "sustain" like it would be in a synth? since that describes the actual behaviour better. Btw this limiter is so good - I am a novice musician but I've been able to get great sounding tracks with the Smart Limit immediately. I've used for example Ozone 9 with the assistant function, but I always felt that it somehow butchered the musicality of my tracks - but with this smart assistant from Sonible, there result feels like it really retains the character of my track.

This is amazing. I don't like the Saturation and I will never use it, I think it's useless, but I don't complain about something in plus. The target presets are more like noob friendly and also not so important, you can basically set your LUFS however you want. The Distortion Monitoring should have an average distortion monitoring, that would be incredible. It's hard for me to tell how much distortion it is, based on some little dynamic orange lines. It doesn't have Oversampling?! What is striking me on this Limiter is the sound. Must be tested more, but for now I'm really impressed.

I grabbed it a couple weeks about, and oh my! it definitely is a deep plug to learn. I've been putting more time into learning mastering lately. I'm starting to get comfortable with the Weiss MM-1, Kazrog K-Clip and whatever compressor happens to work at the time. Then I add the limiter, and this thing really sounds like a big step forward. I've got the Ozone, Elephant, and a few other random limiters, and the Sonible is just better....and my masters will get even better once I REALLY learn it ;:-)

@@mixbustv I find it most useful for keeping the feeling of the dynamics, especially in the low range, while relatively transparently limiting, I use it very conservatively then int Sonible, I can maintain the “spirit” of the mix while being able to get level, like I said loads of level, which means you can use both really conservatively, so very transparently, especially heavy tracks like you demonstrated here. By the way great to see Sonible getting the recognition they deserve, in my opinion the been pushing the creative boundaries of what you can do with such tools while maintaining the integrity of the sounds/mixes. My favourite use of sonible though is the side chain spectral ducking with Smart Comp, it has saved my ass so many times and is the time saver number 1 for me. Ok, I`ve dowloaded the demo and... I have mixed feelings about this limiter. I mean I`ve been using Weiss Compressor/Limiter (part of DS1 MK3 bundle, set to limiter settings) for a good while as my last limiter and spent few hours comparing those two. I`ve done careful comparison and a lot of testing of Smart:Limit. The biggest difference between Weiss and Sonible is that Weiss brings up the middle channel more, it`s more middle channel focused (dropping sides a bit, you can compensate by limitting M/S but still), Sonible is less focused and more balanced both regarding stereo panorama and frequency spectrum), Sonible is less in your face, more open and bit more musical. It sounds more balanced especially in low end while Weiss is harded in low end. Having said that whle checking on loads of songs, Weiss definitely suits more EDM/Electro styles while Sonible being bit more musical especially on stereo field suits better with rock/less agressive hip/hop ect. Weiss is definitely more focused and in your face sounding bit harder especially in low end. I don`t know about Sonible... I`m NOT blown away... it does sound good but it doesn`t suit every material (even after loading AI presets, tweaking attack and release and setting those 4 knobs at the bottom). Weiss definitely has more character although it focuses a lot more in mid channel, being less balanced but that suits EDM/agressive hip/hop/metal better. Sonible is better for less agressive genres. It also sounds less modern than Weiss. I have mixed feelings. How would comment on that David? Can you make a side by side comparison of both Weiss Compressor/Limiter and Sonible as last limiter? I`m really curious about your opinion, as those 2 are very popular for professional mastering. Thank you
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 года назад
What you hear that doesn't convince you is the fact that sonible is true peak, and I really really hope they will make an update and make the option if turning it off. Also it's pretty soft unless you turn the knob past 3 o'clock towards "hard". While I love Weiss bundle to death, the limiter is not the best in that bundle, I usually use it as a pre processing for whatever comes after (AD clipping or other limiters)
@LucasMichalski
@LucasMichalski 2 года назад
@@mixbustv correct me if I`m wrong... True Peak llimiters compromises transients, right? So they sound softer by nature. If Weiss Compressor/Limiter is not their best (why do you think so?) and Sonible being true peak, what other limiter would you recommend? Thank you
@huberttorzewski
@huberttorzewski Год назад
@@LucasMichalski True Peak limiters are seeing extreme parts of the waveform more accurately (very quick sample overshoots above digital 0) that's why they're working harder thus they seem to soften the transients but in fact they're just limiting the parts which normal limiters (not TP) are not seeing. If you bring the threshold higher around 2-2.5dB the TP mode will act roughly the same as normal limiter in terms of pure gain reduction. But it will sound quiter of course. So it's a bit more complicated topic than it seems and it depends on the case when you should use normal vs TP limiting. Transient-heavy material usually likes non TP limiting because incredibly fast clipping of the transients above digital 0 on true peaks is difficult to hear while acoustic songs (with for example piano and vocals only) will benefit from TP limiting - it will sound cleaner and better.

Have to say that I am a bit confused now, Is the "Attack" parameter is actually a "Hold"? if so, why longer Hold will make transients stronger? Cause Hold would hold the limitation, and if the Hold would hold the true volume so it will not limit the attacks and then will not be a limiter, Am I right?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Год назад
No you're not, quite confused I feel. THIS attack, as I said in the video sets the amount of time the SMOOTH release engages. The smoothe release is a slower - compared to the normal - release. So if the attack is set higher, the slower release might never engage, making the track feel louder (at cost of possible distortion) because the limiter returns to zero after every event. THIS attack has nothing to do with transients, transients in a brick wall limiter are chopped off, always, or is not a brick wall limiter.

hey David, can i use the limiter on every single individual stem to balance the mixing or it’s better to do it on the full track?thanks
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Год назад
I'm not sure limiters are the right tool to "balance" a mix. Limiters have one simple purpose, limit peaks, they don't balance things. You also don't use limiters on your entire mix, that's mastering job. But if you do everything yourself, you can use limiters on single tracks or groups, yet, the more limiting you use the flatter and lifeless your mix will sound. Watch my video on crest factor

Hello David, how does that limiter compared to the ozone 9 maximizer and Fabfilter Pro L2?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 года назад
It's overall more transparent but it's softer, I really like both (Ozone and this), Ozone has a certain vibe and aggression that is second to none for some material, this is overall more general purpose. If Sonible takes away the forced true peak limiting, this one becomes the best limiter out there. I don't use Pro-L2 almost at all

Do you have a RU-vid channel? Ima go on a wild guess and say no, you don't, and you don't know how RU-vid works. Let me explain it to you in a few words: for you to benefit - FOR FREE - from my and everyone else's teachings, we creators, have to get our videos viewed. Not only that, but is pretty frustrating and useless if we put effort on making videos (with good information) only to see RU-vid algorithm swallowing them and never show them to the public because you don't have the right thumb and the right title. Hence, we HAVE to put those titles and thumbnails. And guess what? You're here watching AND commenting, so it works. If you don't want any of that you can become a PAYING member and you won't get any of the above. But you won't. You know what's insulting to our intelligence? Comments like yours. Freeloaders complaining about a title.
