The new, more robust (and more complicated) PlayStation Plus is officially out in North America as of Monday. Sony’s new version of its subscription service now offers three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium.
If you’re unfamiliar with Sony’s new subscription service play, you may be wondering: Is this PlayStation’s version of Xbox’s Game Pass? No, and, well, sort of. The higher-priced tiers do offer a catalog of new and classic games for subscribers, much like Xbox’s service. However, Sony has said it doesn’t plan to add new, first-party releases to PlayStation Plus the day they come out - a major Game Pass perk. The PlayStation Plus Essential tier is the version of PS Plus that’s existed for years. Subscribers will get access to monthly games, multiplayer access, discounts, exclusive content, cloud storage, share play, the PlayStation Plus Collection, game help, and free shipping from PlayStation. As it has been, a month will run players $9.99, a year is $59.99.
The PlayStation Plus Extra tier ($14.99 monthly/$99.99 yearly) is the enhanced version of the Essential tier. It comes with all the Essential features and only adds a game catalog of 400 first and third-party PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles that subscribers can access - although selections will likely rotate in and out as the months go by.
The PlayStation Plus Premium tier ($17.99 monthly/$119.99 yearly) is the most enhanced version of PlayStation Plus and the most expensive. It comes with all the features in both Essential and Extra. It also adds a classic catalog of PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable games, game trials for certain titles, and PlayStation 3 cloud streaming games.
As for the classic games emulation, American players are getting a better deal than other regions. When PlayStation started rolling out Premium in Asian territories a few months ago, its classic emulators were running the 50 Hz PAL versions of the game. However, in North America the titles are reportedly running the 60 Hz versions - which, practically speaking, means they’ll run faster for American players.

Maybe not AAA first party games but more than enough games to warrant it's price, until next year when the flood gates do open and the onslaught of AAA first party games keep on coming.

Directors cut on PS plus looks terrible and not because its a ps1 game, there is awful polygon warping on the 3d models ( this didn't happen on the original hardware).

I know this is probably a dumb question but I really don’t understand, I want to play resident evil 1 directors cut on the ps4, I have a PlayStation plus but do I need to pay for the premium ? Is that its own separate thing? Or can I just buy the game for $20 like download I mean and just start playing on the ps4 just like that, I’m so confused.

It will be better if u can just put those physical games ps1, ps2, ps3 in ps5 but u make more money when u put those games in digital store or premium subscription for ps5... The point is u gonna lose all u digital games when psn servers go down and yes ps5 is last sony console from Sony.

The retro catalog right now is extremely small. This was 90% of why I wanted to subscribe to the higher tier, so I'm just going to wait until the catalog hopefully improves.

Agreed! It sucks. I do think I have an idea why, they are taking a page out of other subscription models. Netflix for example gives you everything at once and others give you an episode or 2 and you have to stay for the rest. Hence why they have lesser fluctuating subs than netflix. I'd bet they are holding on to a lot and want to drip feed it into the service monthly instead of blowing their load and having nothing show up for years in the retro catalog like with ps now.

Here in Australia we don’t get access to ps3 titles because we don’t have the ability to stream ps3 games yet we have access to xcloud streaming etc.

It'd be nice, but it's virtually impossible due to the PS3's needlessly complicated Emotion engine CPU architecture. At least 2 PS3 emulators have been in development for over a decade, and even still, the vast majority of the PS3 library is completely unplayable on even the most powerful PC hardware. The PS5 wouldn't stand a chance, and the PS4 even less so. Maybe you'll get that on the PS6.

so the issue with the ps3 streaming and why they are still doing it instead of emulating is that Sony shot itself it it own foot. They over engineered the cell processor and its too unique. The ps4's that came out that emulated ps3 had a special chip to allow emulating the ps3 games. They litterally cant figure out how to emulate their own system through software only on x86 architecture. They are actually employing people to figure it out. so might be downloadable at some point in the future.

With Xbox they designed each console to always be able to play the previous gens games, thanks to that the Series X can play every single generation. But because of Sony's lack of planning it's got that kinda weird gaping hole of PS3 streaming that's stuck behind a pay wall

I think part of the reason that Sony dosen't seem to be putting maximum effort into the ps+ revamp is because it isn't the main focus of their buisness model. They look at it as a extra revenue stream but not in the same way Xbox looks at gamepass. Even though Xbox consoles are still being made, Microsoft's entire buisness model when it comes to Xbox is centered around gamepass.

Thanks for the education. I'm a dad of 3 that doesn't know very much about video games. I wanted to buy the subscription for my 11 year old for his birthday. This video helped me decide which tier. I think since his catalog of games on PS4 is pretty small, I will get the yearly premium package. Our internet connection is solid so it seems like a good value/fit for us.

imma stay at the lowest tier I already own so many games I have not played and I beem doing a good job playing them. I just finish DMC 5 I'm working on Final Fantasy 7 now. I didn't own a PS3 and I hate that I can't download the games. If I could I would upgrade. I'm glad you can buy some of the games. Great outtake on the new subscription.

You nailed what I alluded to a while back. Sony’s biggest titles are so good that I think most people have purchased and/or played them already. I’m an Extra member and Imthere’s really only a handful of games I’ve downloaded to play immediately. Returnal, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, Guardians of the Galaxy, and South Park 2. A lot of the bigger games I already own. But I did see some smaller titles I’d like to give a try.

my main hope is that playstation makes some sort of fps boost. I think its really cool that often with gamepass Xbox ups the framerate of games so although dated, gears of war 2 runs super smooth at 60fps which is an upgrade over its performance issues at launch. Often with older games visuals arent the issue for me but controls and fps are so a way to make games on the service run better and be worth going back to would help.

Not going to happen, sadly. Microsoft has been supporting emulation for the better part of two decades. Sony last year was crapping on people for even wanting backwards compatibility. Now they're selling low effort BC behind a premium paywall. They're not going to build a team to update old titles like Microsoft did on the Xbox. Just is what it is. People should probably feel lucky Sony is offering it at all. Even if they are charging for it.

For those wondering: You can download games with a subscribed account and play them on any other account on the same system. This does not work with PS3 games however as they cannot be natively downloaded. This is bad news for trophy hunters looking to ‘test the waters’ of a game on a secondary account before committing to a trophy run.

Already upgraded to Premium for the rest of my existing PS+ subscription. I was set to renew in October so I just paid the extra $28 out to have it until then. Then come October I'll decide whether the higher tier is worth my money after spending a few months with it.

Join me on the light side, buy an Xbox. On the sands of Mos Espa I have a Series X set up in my cave and it lets me play all the generations of Xbox games from the discs. Me and Yoda managed to nab them from the Jedi archives before we parted ways. I promised him he could play all the PlayStation ones so he was happy to let me have the Xbox games. Little green sucker didn't realise he'd have his games stuck behind a pay wall.

I prefer staying lean with the games I want to play. This way I focus on what I really want, buy it and finish it. I feel these services give me burnout as there is too much and I never finish them because there is always something else to play.

I think it's a solid offer. As a guy who doesn't play too much these days, it is tempting to see some of the PS1 and 2 games available for download via premium. That said, because I'm not THAT avid of a gamer, I might take your suggestion and buy the PS1 games I want and stick with Plus (I didn't see thr "Deluxe" tier you mentioned). Only thing I'm thinking of is that my son might enjoy playing some of the kid-friendly titles on PS3, and rather than buy it so he can maybe love it for nine minutes, I might go ahead and go for the premium (or whatever tier allows access to the PS3 library). Overall I think it's a good offering, and if Sony can lock in that fay on a availability like on Gamepass, this'll definitely be something truly great.

The main issue with these services is the longevity factor. There are always games that should be on the catalogue that aren’t, because it allows for Sony to drop a few on every so often as incentive to keep paying or resub. Overall I think I’ll get the deluxe. I sttartee on the PS2 but the PS3 is where my fondest memories lie. Not being able to play natively is a hard pass seeing as my internet gets hit every evening when everyone is on it in my condo.

I just played Infamous 2 via stream and it actually played a lot better then i thought it would. Slightly pixelated but nothing to bad and the controls were smooth as butter(no input delay).

@@heretickishyt typically no. Gamepass for example, once the game is removed it isn’t playable, even if you have it downloaded. Gamepass usually offers a discount on the game if you want to buy it once it’s removed. We will have to see How Sony handles things.

That is just what I did with the Xbox game pass I found I only played 3 games, snow runner, perfect dark on rare replay and destroy all humans, I realised it would work out a lot cheaper in the long run just buying the games.

really? the highest Tier for ps is $130 a year. I buy normally 1-2 games a year. at $70 a pop (what I just paid for Horizon) that's equal to the $60 ps plus and the $70 game. so I think it's cheaper for me. like I wanted Ghost of Tsunami and AC but didn't want to pay the money. now I can play them!!

@@Michelle_McKenzie I have to be a little more careful with my cash as kids take a large chunk lol, for example the last full price game I bought was gt7 for £65, I then completed all the content in around a month and sold it for 45, the exact price for elden ring. I'm looking at getting horizon 2nd hand I've seen it for £20 but got snapped up in a couple hours at that price

PS+ Premium is actually $10 a month with a year subscription. You said it was $18 a month but that is only if you pay month to month. So you are are actually saving yourself money by subscribing for a year rather than paying monthly. Don't mislead people.

I had purchased downloadbale games that I had on my previous main account that I can no longer access. So with a new main account, I happened to find most of those purchased game in the upgraded version of PS+. So for me I was satisfied. Plus my final decision to upgrade is Stray being available on released. So I personally dig it so far. Was a nice discount for the upgrade. BUT...I still prefer physical copies.

I just looked at the lists of available games and for PS5, PS4, and PS3 the games on offer are amazing. the games on offer for PS2 and PS1 are pitiful and not even very good. I was looking forward to PS2 games in particular but there is almost nothing.

I've been an Xbox gamer for the last 17 years and I have the Series X and game pass and I adore it BUT I just ordered a PS5 now because for me 18 dollars a month to Play The last of us, Uncharted, Both Spider man games, God of war, Ghost of T and all the ratchet and clank's and Jak's I've missed all these years is an absolute steal. For me the service is phenomenal and once my PS5 arrives next week I'm going to get lost inside it. Having a PS5 with Premium and an Xbox with Game pass is basically the Ultimate Entertainment package for me. Now I don't have to miss anything.

@@TrevorDans just one problem. All Xbox is good for is game pass. This service by Sony is a simple add on. The game pass model doesn’t encourage any form of ownership. Xbox players don’t buy games. Hints reason Microsoft is picking up the tab in till they can make money off game pass.

I think you hit the nail on the head. This is great for someone like me that just got a PS5 last Christmas after decades of being an XBox player, and not being rich enough to afford every PS exclusive, or wanting to try some PS Exclusives, but not willing to drop $60-70. Having this, and Gamepass at the same time is pretty much amazing. Game Trails seems like something I really want as new games come out. Sadly there are only like 15 games you can try out.

@@cantseeshadow Yes. I might go that route. Currently I have a Chiropractor that’s working on it once a week. If he can’t fix it, I’ll have that procedure done. It’s about a 20 minute procedure. But the Recovery can take awhile.

PS3 emulation is currently in the work it’s bc ps3 had a weird power cell I think that made it hard to make games for the ps3 and emulate as well but they are working on it so hopefully within the next year we’ll get ps3 download

I don't care how good the internet is in the future, how well they claim the service is or even if the games are tiny in file size; streaming games will never be preferable to running them natively off your console digitally or physically. These companies needs stop trying to progress this idea and simply keep things simple. If people want to play games cheaper; then wait for sales as games can and do become dirt cheap after a while. I don't mind the existence of these service but NEVER as a substitution for giving us the option to buy and own what ever games we wish.

This looks great I will be getting the PS Plus Premium to begin with and take it from there. I'm really hoping in terms of classic PS2 and PSP games, we see 'GTA Liberty City Stories, GTA Vice City Stories, Burnout 2 and Burnout 3 and The Getaway 1 and 2. I would love to see these games appear in the future, fingers crossed.

Thanks for sharing this info with us. Seems like they definitely nailed everything except the performance of PS3 games. Hopefully later down the road they do add more titles and possibly the ability to download PS3 games. Honestly the fact that even older PS1 games can run at 60 hz is very impressive. By contrast On Xbox certain titles I’ve played have issues with FPS boost.

The PS3 thing is because all the games made for it had Cell Processing in their DNA, cell is notoriously difficult to emulate. They opted to stream it from OG hardware as the PS4/5 do not have cell processing hardware.

Sony did amazing job with PS1 emulator. It has a retro filter and makes game look like on 90s TV. I playing Resident Evil Directors Cut and it’s amazing I feel like I am back in 90s on my PlayStation and my old 📺. That filter is amazing!

I got the PS Plus Extra myself ( $99/yr ) plan..i dont care too much about the real old games, I like the PS4/PS5 games, and the PS Plus Extra has lots of them, great PS5 games especially. I used to have a Series X and Game Pass, and PS really did a great job with this subscription service. Game Pass mostly has games for 10 yr old kids, PS Plus Extra has blockbuster games and will add new ones monthly. So its well worth the money to me.

I’ll save you the time. Yes. Classics catalogue is very limited and in its limitations very few recognizable titles. Free downloadable games are…ones youve already bought. God of War, Uncharted, Days Gone, Spiderman. Its…maybe 6.5/10

The premium tier for the next 9 months is only costing me like $44, so I went ahead and purchased it. This will be a nice 9 month trial for me to see whether or not I want to keep it for the following year. But I will say this, there are a lot of PS4 games that I have not tried yet that were included with the premium subscription. So I have 9 months to play these and I’m actually excited for that.

I'm indifferent to it. It definitely has promise. But the lack of being able to play PS3 games natively and no 1st party day and date releases makes it a pass for me. Also putting the backwards compatibility behind the highest pay wall.
