The New Pornographers "Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk" Late Night w/ David Letterman June 30, 2010. NY band Bird of Youth on handclaps, as well as friend of the band simply known as Skippy, according to Carl Newman
Kurt Dahle left the New Pornographers after. “Brill Bruisers” for some 15 years he lent the New Pornographers a distinct sound. He has a unique immediately identifiable style/sound. He was replaced by current NP drummer Joe Seiders.
Yeah saw them in person a few months ago and fell in love with Kathryn. She came out and set up her own station before the concert. And she does this weird dance with her arm behind her back.
The first album I got to know from The New Pornographers and couldn't stop listening. And I was so happy to find out at that time that they had other albums previously released!
@823south Kurt Dahle is a superhero back there. One of the best drummers working today and really integral to the band. Listen to Bleeding Heart Show again, and bask in his awesomeness.
Great performance. The in studio sound must have been incredible (Letterman's crew and Paul S made sure the sound was optimum). I am convinced Carl Newman is as good an arranger as there is--(Brian Wilson and Stanley and Wiggs from St Etienne, Nile Rodgers et al). He also writes incredible songs especially the melodies and the vocal arrangements!
Sometime's Carl's lyrics blow my mind, even if they don't necessarily make sense. Mass Romantic? Just brilliant. You can get away with anything with a tune like that.
Thanks a ton, They're my favorite band and I had the pleasure to see them live. (June 13th 2010!) It was my first concert and I don't think I could have chosen a better concert as my first. I enjoyed every song they played, Sang along (Sometimes too loud) To every song and jumped too much when they started playing Moves, Bumping into two people in front of me who didn't mind much. I apologized later. (Also, You can hear me singing along to Myriad Harbour in a video here on YT - Its around 2:41)
I saw Neko Case with the Sadies about 20 years ago. She was beautiful, talented AND funny. "Boy it's hot here in Pittsburgh," she told the audience. "It's so hot that my eggs have fused together!"
I love this band...heard it on the kindle commercial....thought they were saying we talk we talk...lol.....love it so much!!! so good to see they were on letterman...hope they get more shows etc
+Hugh Leung To be fair, the four clapping in the back are part of another band and were touring with TNP at the time of this recording. They're not from the bands "The Dutchess and the Duke" or "The Dodos" who were also touring with TNP in the same year, though.
@thebatdad71 Couldn't agree with you more. Saw TNP last year on tour and could not stop watching him. Great drummer and fun to watch as well (amazing facial gestures)
@101Volts I saw them the night before you, in Milwaukee of June 12th. It was the first time I've seen them, but have seen Neko solo before. I could not have been happier. Hoping to see them again in Chicago in August if I can somehow land tickets. Glad you enjoyed, too. I will check out your video.
Having just seen them all in Chapel Hill last Friday night, I'm pretty sure the clappers were members from the two opening acts on this tour (The Duchess & the Duke...The Dodos).
how can i get a gig as one of the clappers? it's a good thing they have 4 back there, cause 3 would just make it feel like it was lacking something. the new album is fantastic by the way.
So because one band member isn't from Canada, then it's no longer a Canadian band? Seems a bit too strict to me. And if it's not a Canadian band, then what country are you going to relate it to? Nup, they're a Canadian band, and that's that.
@thomasmoredamian...We all have our blind spots. I don't think there's anything wrong with your opinion. My wife LOVES Neko, but is lukewarm on TNP. Me, I don't get The White Stripes. Like you I feel nothing. Talented, influential and important, no doubt, but I just don't get it. TWS are bigger and more influential than TNP but they toured hard as hell behind the CD and I think they could really break when the next CD rolls around. But it is what it is. Thanks for commenting.
@101Volts Carl Newman claimed, via Twitter, it's a NY band called Bird of Youth, as well a friend simply known as Skippy. Gotta take his word for it. He would know. But you're right. That one guy looks so much like the dud fro D & D.
@thebatdad71 It was amazing seeing them live. I still felt singing to each song the next day, My throat was worn out. Also, The video I'm talking about isn't my video, Its from a site named Ohio Rocks. Right now I'm not sure if that was me at 2:39 or so (Its sounding more like Dan to me now) Oh well. You can see me in that video for a moment though, I waved my hands around at about 0:29.
Brilliant band. They craft their songs, which is rare nowadays. Pity they are not as talented at choosing a name for the group. When you have the goods musically, as they do, there's no need to resort to such a juvenile and/or controversial name to get the public's attention
@jw1293 My bad. I thought for sure I recognized the one fellow as being from D & D. AC Tweeted earlier exactly what Monolithishy said. Apologies for my part in misidentifying those folks here.
@jw1293 I saw them in Atlanta June 26 and NP said that the next night's show in Nashville would be sad it because would be their last show with D&D. Just an added tidbit to this now-irrelevant conversation.
This band got started in my town of Vancouver BC, but Letterman's not entirely correct in calling it a "Canadian" band. Neko Case is their best singer & she's American & lives in the U.S.A. now. Of course, here we like to think of Neko as an "honourary Canadian" as she got her musical start while an Art School student for 5 years in Vancouver in country & punk bands, including all-female "Maow", & then w. TNP.Sadly, the Canadian gov't kicked her out as a resident when her student visa expired!
Gosh, I really WISH that I could like this kinda stuff, but it is so dull and nowhere that...I dunno, it seems like a lotta college kids got together and had a party and drank some beers and got all excited about making a "statement" about god knows what, and...where's the inspiration, creativity, imagination? They sound like they're the entertainers at a telethon or something. Saw them live a couple years ago and felt absolutely nothing afterwards: THIS is the sound of indie rock? Help!
