Apple announced the new Mac Studio and... it's not that different from a 2013 trash can Mac Pro-it was just in the right place, at the right time, with the right hardware. In this episode, we talk about Apple's "peek performance" keynote, Apple TV+, iPhone SE 3, the 2022 iPad Air, and of course, the Apple Studio Display and Mac Studio with M1 Ultra.

Boring take: I find the plain M1 that can deliver pretty incredible performance, while barely sipping power or generating heat to the point where it doesn't need a fan, to be the most impressive version of the different iterations. It's just such a perfect laptop soc.

Then I would get the 24" iMac. I do not mean that in a mean way. it's honesty. It's only basically an inch on each side. We had a 24" iMac with 1 tb and 16gb memory and it could run Adobe cc no problem. I really believe as most software becomes m1 native or however you say that the software will make it where vs saying "future proof" you can almost go backwards and use machines that are not super charged and still do what it needs. The fact is now you will spend at least around 2500 for a desktop / laptop and that monitor and of course that is the low end on the lap / desk side but its still going to give you a lot of power. That m1 iMac on the refurb store is looking like a good deal at 1269 for 16gb of ram and you can always get the Samsung ssd at 2tb for 200.

Speakers, in a monitor. Why did Apple bother? They make sense, sort of, if this was a salvaged attempt at a new 27 inch iMac (Pro), but no one wants to pay for engineering of an Atmos sound system, or a 12MP camera (let me pick up my monitor, drag it to the window to snap a photo of a bird, or just you know, grab my phone and do the same). Incorporating a groove to rest an iPhone, or to sidecar an iPad would have made far more sense. I think Apple was going to make a very powerful 27 inch iMac, but realized the cooling required made it ‘thick’. Rather than accepting that, they split the project into two products, hence the totally unnecessary camera and Atmos speakers coupled to the (very) familiar 5k panel, that only seems like a complete product when paired with the Studio. Apple seems to be right back in that Ive rut. Too bad.

It's possible to reuse the LCD panels from 5K iMacs as external monitors with a replacement USB-C driver board from aliexpress. I'd love to see a comparison between a DIY 5K iMac display and the new Studio Display. I bet that they are extremely similar in quality but drastically different in cost. Furthermore, I predict there will soon be a surplus of used 5K iMacs with (still fantastic) displays that have been replaced with Apple Silicon machines. Converting an old 5K iMac into a monitor is probably not an easy beginner project, but with the extreme potential for savings compared to the Studio Display (and the almost identical LCD quality), this might make much more sense than buying a new monitor for some people.

I think you're very much underselling the M1 Ultra as not being quite so exciting. For the chip-nerd, it is BY FAR the most interesting and frankly unexpected (in the way it is technically done) thing here. Yes, multi-die chips and packaging are the future and everyone is working on it, and its been the direction Apple was rumored to be going in as well. But this is much different from what is shipping in, for example, AMD Ryzen chiplets. That interconnect is nowhere near as fast, and those cores are not treated the same - die-to-die communication is much higher latency, they don't access the whole cache in the same way. And that is for CPU cores. The speed is even more important for large GPUs. Anything else we've seen out there (as far as know, I'm not an expert, I could be wrong) addresses the GPUs as separate - connected, yes, but not the same GPU, it's not transparent, which means that software has to be written in such a way as to target that. What they have done here - or CLAIM to have done here, we shall see - is build an interconnect that is fast and efficient enough for it to basically present to the system as one chip, one GPU, which is nuts. Someone was gonna crack this at some point, but I wasn't expecting it to be so soon and not necessarily Apple, good as their chip design is. Maybe they're getting the tech from TSMC, I have no idea. Credit here to Ryan Smith (AnandTech EiC), read his tweets and AnandTech article if you wanna know more (and probably better explained).

Fair that two GPUs addressable as one is very neat. I don’t mean to say Apple’s tech isn’t impressive-they best RDNA3 to market-it’s just that it’s not so novel it needs its own marketing name. Yeah 2 parts and you get to pay MORE than twice. This is a perfectly OK computer other than the massive fans, but it is wildly over-engineered and over priced for the category. Taking away the perfectly productive 27" iMac 27" and "replacing" it with a bulkier set up that costs 2 to 3 times as much, means you have half to one third the workstations for your budget. People are still the slowest component in a workstation. Radically speeding up the hardware no longer makes much difference. There is a point where good enough cpu is good enough, what we need is access to a good large user interface, which means a large sharp display. 27" Retina pretty well nails it, but bigger would be better for seeing video/audio tracks and more detail in visual images/data. I am still waiting on an M1/2 27" or better iMac. This is a pass. And I am fairly certain it will be a dead end design, just like the similar Macs before it.

Here's what people don't talk about tho : the 2017 iMac Pro. Those were just... too powerful. Apple still sell them btw, just in the "refurbished" section, but I highly suspect that they don't want you to know that they still have them in stock is all. I mean... Xeon 18 cores W chip in an all-in-one?!!! This still smokes M1 in terms of sheer computational power. It's completely insane and we don't talk nearly enough about this. I think this is partly why iMacs will be abandoned : people have displays or want to buy their own and couple them with a mac mini/mac studio; they can make more money by selling the computer and the display separately; and, most importantly, they've already been to the very end of the road of iMac optimization in 2017! There's just no way you can cram more power than a freaking Xeon 18 cores chip into a iMac. They just can't improve it further, but they don't wanna tell you.

@tedrodenborn8172 2 года назад
@@outofahat9363 , I did. Yes, that's really expensive, but for me it was a value proposition: The only way you can get the maximum speeds Apple claims for their drives, is by getting the 8TB array. And yes, I say array, because they do appear to be an array of some kind, which is how Apple is getting these unprecedented speeds. The 4TB one is close, but the drop-off continues as the drives get smaller. The fastest external RAID drive I have, is a striped set of nVME drives, that's 4TB, and respectably gets around 2,500 Mb/s, sometimes a little more. The 4TB drive in my MacBook Pro 16" is more than double that. I think that if you're able to find an array that can stripe a set of drives to speeds even close to what Apple currently has, you'd be approaching that $2k price tag pretty quickly for 8TB. Even if you're short, would you rather have the data be bussed through a Thunderbolt connection, or through the ridiculous 800 GB/s bandwidth of the SOC? Isn't that worth whatever extra we're talking about here? I can't upgrade the drive beyond my purchase, so I'm making sure I get the most for my dollar. Considering that merely upgrading to M1 has increased my productivity and overall output, this is a no brainer. This fully specced out computer will easily have paid for itself by this time next year. And I plan for it to last well beyond.

In all that time I have *never* bought an Apple display. Maybe if I was a pro doing photo editing I would, but then I wouldn’t mind paying pro prices. I think with the new Mac Studio, the sweet spot for me is going to be the $4000 base package M1 Ultra which includes 64GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. I recently convinced my dad to not only downgrade his Netflix account but to outright cancel Apple TV+. Even though these are subscriptions and you can cancel/pause whenever you like, a lot of people have the mentality to just keep paying even if you're not using it. Apple was that for my family. I've enjoyed Ted Lasso and a few films and my dad definitely got more use out of it than I did but it got to the point where he was paying for it and not really using it and with price inflation going absolutely through the roof lately, it was time to cut it. Apple are the late comer to the streaming wars but their approach just doesn't really require the monthly commitment that pretty much every other service has. Heck, even Disney+ was late to the party but they had a huge back catalog they could rely on and the purchase of Fox only boosted that catalog even more, something that Apple doesn't have. I think I am probably going to end up getting the M1 Ultra Mac Studio sometime next year. Last month I got an M1 Mac Mini so I want to get my money out of that first before I upgrade again. Also, I might end up with a studio display because while it's not the best value I am kind of obsessed with super overkill multi-monitor setups. If it was not for the only 2 external display outputs on the M1 Mac mini then I would still have the 4 monitor setup I was using on my old Mac.

Watching the event, I was waiting for them to give a price on the Studio Display. Already had it in my mind, $999 I'll buy. Needless to say, I did not buy.

im not trying to be smartass here. Curious as to why you thought that display would be 999? Wishful thinking (which is fine:) or another reason?

@@roguewavecreative I wasn’t guessing $999 myself, but Apple’s most recent 3 consumer displays have all been $999.

@@snazzy right:). I did not mean you. Someone commented that they could do 999 and thought that was fair. To me the price comes down to investing in my small agency and how fast can we pay it off. The price adjusted for everything is decent. Not perfect:). It has always been a bit of a puzzle to me why monitors have become so not dippsable is the right word but overall not so good. Ive been spoiled with the crispness of alle over the years and a tually prefer the glossy anything wlse sames meh. As always great video snazzy man!

Great video! I really enjoyed the content, however, i feel the extra side-profile camera shots were a bit unnecessary. I understand SnazzyLabs is experimenting with their new studio. Hope this feedback helped!

Mac Studio with Ultra and max out ssd 8tb as well as 128GB ram is ordered. Will arrive at end of april or mid of may. Display i stay with 34 Inch 5k LG UltraWide Display. Although the speakers, cam and mic on the studio display would be great for WFH

$3,100 with the adjustable stand for the new (old, iMac 5K panels realistically they couldn't do anything with) in Australia. Mac Mini on steroids is $6,099 for the M1 Ultra / 48 GPU / 64GB / 1TB... it's a lot of money and I feel like my MBA M1 has been a champ in Logic Pro with heaps of plugins (Neural DSP / Comp / EQ / Gain) so I'm perplexed as to whether it's worth going all in on the Ultra

Great insights, as usual. I traded in my M1-MacMini for the Studio - because the Studio will drive dual Thunderbolt monitors. I was hoping for a "Mac Mini Pro" announcement and I feel the Studio is pretty much it. I'm concerned about the size of it - easily twice the height of the Mac Mini, and the need for cooling fans. But as a freelance computer programmer, it's more power than I'll ever use. I got the base model (plus 1TB drive) and I don't see having to replace it for a long, long time. I'm subscribed and enjoying your work. Continued Success!

I’m absolutely going to order a Mac Studio at some point. I haven’t been as excited about a Mac since my G4 Cube. The display? Maybe. I’m on the fence. I wish it were larger or wide screen. I’d probably need 2 ..

Watching both the Apple event yesterday and your video on my late 2015 27” iMac with some superb Totem desktop speakers for the audio, I was a little underwhelmed with the Studio display because of its price and the fact that I’ve been functionally looking at it for six years now. However, I am quite excited about the Studio, keen to see the performance tests in the next couple of weeks and assess if this might be the right upgrade early next year. Being a photographer, I have another Benq photo grade monitor so will not need this new display. With a nod to your prior iPhone ranking video, I have to replace my Iphone X next month and it will now be the new green 13 Pro…definitely the snazziest colour yet.

Not in the target market for the mac studio and I'm extremely happy using a 4k 43" TV as a monitor with my 8/14 14" Pro. But I love the new mac studio. That said, I was kinda disappointed they didn't use the same power connector from the imac 24". In fact in all the marketing material they hide the cable, as opposed to proudly displaying it.

I've been holding out for a 27" iMac but caved when I seen the Mac studio and studio display. Ordered the base Mac Studio and one thing I'm really happy about the studio display is that I can hook up my MacBook Pro to it. I wasn't looking forward to not being able to use the iMac in Target Display mode but this solves it for me.

Love how objective you always are - the Studio desktop is an incredible machine - it’s impossible to know if the upgrade to Ultra is good value - I’m not sure if anyone knows how much these SOCs actually cost. And I agree the display is not ground-breaking - but as the ATP presenters have made clear, does address a clear gap in the market which LG is going a terrible job of filling.

I ordered the new studio display to use with my 14" macbook air. Its not a particularly good value display but I really wanted to have an all Apple setup (computer, display, keyboard, mouse, and headphones).

Hello, I'm a huge fan of your videos. I've found the information you provide to be extremely helpful, thank you for your expertise! I have a question regarding the Mac Studio as I'm purchasing one. Being that the new 5k display for $1599 is essentially the same tech used in the previous iMacs aside from speakers and web cam, can I use the previous Mac Cinema Displays which are much more affordable? Thank you!

Definitely ordering the Mac mini since I'm on vacation in LA from Michigan. Ironically my first job was a place called CityMac in high school so at 16 I was technically Apple certified as a product professional and sales professional and we got these awesome little diplomas and metal Apple pins

I see people hating on the studio design… I work in app development and this makes total sense from a pipeline Devops side. We have rack chassis that fit minis and I can already think of several that could house a studio instead of 2 or 3 minis in the same space so this would be a massive space improvement performance wise.

That's some serious hardware, can't say I currently have a need for a 5K display. Couldn't resist a LG 1440P 16:9 27" for $240 plus GST on clearance at Walmart. Makes a great secondary screen to my Viewsonic 27" VP2771 I got in 2019 as an opened box for $333.25 CND on amazon.

Agree about the Studio Display. I'm sure it's better than the similar specced, 2 year old display that I'm currently using (LG 4k 31.5" for $1200~ Australian), but the Apple studio starts at $2599 here.
