The New Treasure Hunt (late 1973) - An Empty Box?

Although this show began life in the 1950s, it was when Chuck Barris decided to give it another go in the 70s to compete with Let's Make a Deal where it really took off. While it's hard to see a show this random really flying today (at least IMO), it sure makes for a fun time piece thanks to the sheer spontaneity and Geoff Edwards' suburb hosting.
And this episode, from early in the 70s run, very much embodies all that. See what happens when both games take very unexpected U-turns, and what direction the contestants end up on!

There is _no way in hell_ that a show like this could be aired, let alone pitched, today. It would be deemed too mean for a modern audience. The whole premise of the show was based upon toying with a woman's emotions. They never had any males as contestants on this show, and for good reason. Had they tried this show with a guy as a contestant, they'd have had lawsuits to deal with and the guy might have tried to put someone associated with the show in the hospital. One episode had planned to have a particularly mean sketch, which _(almost)_ resulted in host Geoff Edwards quitting the show out of protest. The woman would have been led to believe that she had just won a new car, but the reveal would have shown that she had only won _THE WINDSHIELD._ _Horrible, horrible_ sketch idea, but fortunately, this one never made it to air.

Sivi Aberg (blonde) was a staple of Chuck Barris Productions. She was a contestant on "The Dating Game" in 1967; she served as a hostess on "Operation: Entertainment," a USO-type variety show on ABC in 1968; and she assisted Barris and often introduced him on "The Gong Show."

Good guess. But this was a remake of a late-1950's TV show called "Treasure Hunt", originally on ABC (primetime), then NBC (daytime), created and hosted by comedian Jan Murray. So "Treasure Hunt" beat "LMaD" to air by just a few years.

Well, who else could come up with a show with such a flimsy premise but Chuck Barris? Somewhere in his diary, it must say, "Spent three minutes and thirty-seven seconds developing a new show today." I remember the original Treasure Hunt with Jan Murray, which, despite his being a comedian, was much more serious (and boring) than this 30-minute commercial for dozens of products. On the other hand, Geoff Edwards was brilliant as the host here. Monty Hall was the fast talking trader, somewhat detached from the contestants. You always got the feeling he was doing business, and he had to get a lot of business done in 23 minutes, five or six games before the final deal. Edwards knew this whole show was a silly put-on and was intentionally and em-barris-ingly over the top, as was every detail of this show, from models parading to march music, down to pricing all those unrelated items in a showcase down to the penny for no particular reason. I wouldn't binge watch this version of Treasure Hunt but appreciate the chance to have fun with it again in small doses. Thank you. PS $7,000 then is the equivalent of about $50,000 today. Not a bad haul, for not having to know or do anything. And since it was in cash, she had the money to pay the tax on her winnings.
