When you mentioned the uncontrolled aprons in the U.S., I immediately thought of the infamous “Virgin Pilot Gets Angry During Taxi” video out of KAUS where a VIR pilot was seriously unimpressed with the pushback timing of a SWA 737 and multiple crews chimed in on the radio with less than professional but amusing commentary. Patience is a virtue. Go on gents, we’ll be filing on this!

I kind of get the changes but to be honest I personally don’t believe that they will have a huge impact on pilot behaviour in general on the network. I would say the majority of people already use up to date charts and inform themselves about local differences and procedures. The people who disregard most of the basic rules and guidelines will continue to do so for sure regardless of the new rules. And then there is the issue of enforcement. How can a supervisor reasonably decide whether a User actively informed himself about local procedures? I mean many people on the network are not professionals and might have a bad day or do mistakes by accident. So I agree that from an idealistic standpoint everyone should comply with the new rules but in reality it remains a hobby environment which is prone to some level of “chaos” and amateur behaviour. I personally have no problem with that :)

My first VATSIM experience was incredibly nice, I was being overtaken by a Ryanair 737 on approach, and guess who the ATC told to go around, they gave me a 200kn speed restriction for a previous arrival as Cork needs a backtrack on the runway to vacate it, while Mr. Ryanair was coming in hot, they didn't even extend his final that much. My man is calling Shamrock to go around am like, are you for real mate haha! got to practise my Go Around at least can't remember last time I had to do one.

Another informative video Emmanuele. This Vatsim change puts us all on notice to follow instruction implicitly from our devoted ATC controllers. It also brings us a step closer to real-world dynamics. Something very welcome to seasoned simmers. Thanks' for the update - Greetings from Australia

Thanks Emi. For me you have missed one of the most important that being B5 announcing intentions in uncontrolled airspace. “Where another pilot may benefit, or when in doubt, a pilot shall transmit their intentions on the designated advisory frequency.” This for me is the single most annoying issue in any on line flying. For example, Heathrow is always busy on Vatsim. There can be multiple aircraft inbound with pilots either saying nothing about their intentions or simply calling established on the ILS having done so by ignoring other aircraft. Equally on the ground, taxing without saying anything etc. We have the use of voice on Unicom. However, if there are say ten aircraft all saying intentions, it’s impossible to remember who said what and is going where. At least text messages will avoid some potential confusion. “Where a pilot may benefit” is too thin for me. This should be expanded to something for example, “Where two or more aircraft are likely to arrive at the same airport at a similar time, all pilots must clearly broadcast their ongoing intentions to other pilots to ensure separation. Direct contact between pilots in such situation is encouraged”. Simply rocking up and doing your own thing is not good enough. If I find myself being overrun by aircraft who simply say minimal or nothing, I disconnect and land off line. I know the term shall means MUST. More clarification on “Where a pilot may benefit” is needed.

Flying a holding pattern would be a game changer example hold on a waypoint with an inbound of 330 standard turns and the expected time to exit, instead of always hold as published. If you have access to AtplQ Airlaw it has a good explanation.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 дня назад
The tricky part here is the turn direction: While a standard traffic pattern is to the left, the holding is to the right.
@bencalhoun8216
@bencalhoun8216 2 дня назад
If you fly VFR on VATSIM you can request that and ATC gives it to you accurately like in real life. However the reason 99% of holding in VATSIM is as published is because that is what usually happens in real life.

Emi, throughout my re-reading of the COC, I could not but keep thinking "yes, but what if they don't?". I welcomer the changes. But, I wonder how pilots will be disciplined and how. I suspect the arguments of 'shall' versus 'ought' will continue into the future.

The problem with guard frequency is some planes don't have a com 2 or their com 2 doesn’t work even if it's modelled. I'd encourage ATC to still use contact me if guard doesn't work. Otherwise, we might as well monitor guard instead of unicom and guard becomes the defacto unicom.

Would be nice if pilots could learn CTAF procedures. Surprised at how many in the US never even bother calling intentions. Even if on Unicom. VATSIM radar has become a necessity now.

These changes to the COC are all well and good, but will they be enforced? Too many times I've had to wallop someone for causing issues by not making calls/monitoring Unicom and nothing being done about it. I even had a SUP dismiss me when I reported someone for cutting me off last night, then my ticked was closed without it being read when I took it higher... Looks to me like we can break all the rules we want as long as we disconnect before a supervisor is contacted?

Slightly ironic that you were talking about clarifying terms for non-native English speakers, but then later on used the German sense of "must not," which in English would be "don't have to" or "not required to." At least I assume that's what you meant and Vatsim hasn't banned people from using Navigraph subscriptions lol

I think they're going to need to create a dedicated "noobs" network, geographically limtied so controllers can handle it, for peope new to ATC and/or vatsim (or even just testing new aircraft theyre bot too sure about) to practice. This could then have dramatically lowered expectations and rules so people feel more comfortable getting started. I know I for one probably wont be jumping in very soon if theyre making it more strict.

Seems to me that VATSIM may soon be a thing of the past if SayIntentions and Beyond ATC keep making progress. I haven’t flown on VATSIM alot, but the few times I have, there was no coverage or a controller decided to disconnect 2 minutes prior to my pushback. I’d rather have full coverage everywhere 24/7. I’ll wait until those are up to speed and use that instead.
@oldpeopleplayinggames9426
@oldpeopleplayinggames9426 2 дня назад
dont think so. I always will prefer the realism of Vatsim over the AI solutions. I would assume that Beyond ATC and Sayintentions appeal to a broader audience of simmers, but if you are deep in it, no machine will be able to mirror the Vatsim experience
@maverick2671
@maverick2671 2 дня назад
Don’t get me wrong. I would much prefer VATSIM and that human interaction. It’s just a bit of an immersion killer to me if there isn’t full coverage, or many times no coverage which I realize is not possible.

@@oldpeopleplayinggames9426 I mean, saying no machine will be able to mirror it is a stretch. in 20 years programs like these might be so high fidelity its literally no different than an experience in real life. With ATCs taking unrecognizably different than real life, having full on personalities, memorization (perhaps you fly there often and they recognize you), small spats (even between other AI pilots), moments of confusion, etc. Basically in a way thats unrecognizable to a human. Of course though, that time is not now. Nor will it be for some time.
@Avia_FJ
@Avia_FJ 2 дня назад
@@maverick2671 Doubt it will be that "soon" and even if, certainly not because of the AI ATC substitutes available elsewhere...gosh they are miles behind anything "realistic" now. Nothing would prevent Vatsim from using the same technology either, much likely we will soon have a mixture of live human ATC and very basic AI in uncontrolled sectors similar to what's being tested now in VATUSA. I mean teaching AI to understand and interpret different dialects, wrong spellings, different and thick accents....it's going to take aaages! No AI would ever substitute any native French ATC, that's well beyond any AI brain for the next one thousand years 😁!

Speaking of Holding points I have a question. I was on VATSIM flying into South Lake Tahoe and received these instructions: "At KING intersection, hold N West 171 inbound - turn right turn - standard leg - expect further at 2328z..." I knew he wanted me to do a right holding pattern at the waypoint KING but I was completely lost on the rest. I informed him I was sure about the rest and he was helpful. However, I do want to know what to do if I ever run across this again. Would you be able to do a video explaining how a procedure like this would be done? Thanks.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 дня назад
Hi, except for the "hold N West" part this is basically a standard holding instruction. A holding is defined by 3 (4) parts: Inbound Course to the fix Direction of turns Length of legs (minimum/maximum holding altitude) So in your case you create the holding as follows in your FMC: 171 inbound R turns Legtime depends on altitude: 1 minute below FL140, 1:30 above it. The last part tells you when to expect to leave the hold. Whenever a delay exceeds 20 minutes, the controller must inform you of the expected approach time (EAT).

In RL you have a First Officer to manage the Radios and all the other stuff like searching waypoints.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 дня назад
Not necessarily, there are many planes certified for single pilot operation under IFR, including jets. Managing radios is not that hard, finding waypoints and inserting those into the FMC falls under the Pilot Flying's tasks either way - though it is of course helpful if you can just hand over controls. That's what ATC is good for as well though - if you can't keep up to speed just ask for delay vectors or a holding.

So if guard is now used does that mean controllers will no longer ping you through VPilot when you are suppsed to contact them? Speaking of being precise about the differnce between "shall" and "should": You said sometime around 12:30 : "You must not purchase a paid subscription." That means: "You are not allowed to purchase a paid subscription. Don't do it!" You meant to say: "You don't have to purchase a paid subscription". "Must not" is a false friend in german. It does not translate to "Musst nicht" but to "darf nicht."

Every time I encounter VATSIM I wonder why people want to ruin their own fun. Sure, realism above all, but if it was somehow a mandatory feature of FlightSim I would simply make do with flying in Grand Theft Auto. I just had to hear what the new "rules" are and yeah, less interested than ever. I prefer the freedom of the mostly-empty clone of Earth to being directed at every turn.

I still hate the fact that VATSIM pilots will still hog a gate during their boarding and deboarding process. They make a really big deal to be on VATSIM for thirty extra minutes at the gates loading and unloading. It its a big cheat to me to log time on the ground at the gate. Instead, do everything from A-Z, once the cabin door close and jetway disconnect. Go online and request push and start, and as soon as you land. Shut down your engines, and log off. Is really that simple. But again, were dealing with VATSIM pilots who do what they want to do at times. For those who like to be away for more than 30 minutes like going to school, sleeping, and family visits (Yeah its still a thing) please logoff lol
@planely1263
@planely1263 День назад
I absolutely disagree with the first point: Unless in a very busy event or at a very small airport with a lot of traffic and few available gates, I see absolutely no harm in connecting early or staying connected. On the contrary: To me it greatly enhances immersion when I have a lot of traffic around me, also stationary traffic at gates - just like it would be IRL. The days of server bandwidth shortcommings - and the ensuing requirement to limit online time - appear to be finally over. Secondly, when I do my full setup offline until ready for pushback, I can be absolutely sure that 'my' stand will be taken in the meantime and I have to move. Breaking the immersion and forcing me to setup, e.g., GSX again. And what's that argument about logging online time? The VATSIM Stats are not your flight logbook, and in the end they are of nobody's concern but your own. As to the second point: Of course you should disconnect, when you're not at the controls for a prolonged period of time! That should be a no-brainer. I have a wireless headset that allows me to monitor ATC and be back at the controls within seconds, even when I do other things in the appartment for a short time. But when I fly long haul and need a period of rest, of course I disconnect, and carefully reconnect afterwards.
