Volkswagen invited us down to their UK HQ to view the new ID Buzz with a look to finding out if it can be used as a platform for a campervan conversion.
This video goes through our thoughts and answers the question, can we make the ID Buzz into a campervan?
We also give you a brief review of the van itself and crucially look at the space available. Will this be the next id california? will it be the next electric jerba campervan? will this be the next electric volkswagen camper?
Watch to find out, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

A lifting roof and a stove in the back would already be enough for me for most trips. The ID Buzz is definitely bigger than the XBus camper version.

I so hope these are made into camper vans! I live in Canada and we're constantly bombarded with these massively oversized beasts that never have the vibe of the original Westfalia. Good luck with the conversions!

They'll never sell it over here as a commercial vehicle or camper for the same reason we don't get the current California: The US Chicken Tax. It's such a massive pain, as the California would sell so well over here especially in BC.

although they don’t have a raised transmission tunnel so you have a nice flat floor, EVs effectively have the entire floor as a transmission tunnel as its all raised to make space for the batteries. So it’ll always have a good chunk of lost headroom vs an ICE version which in the back can be just mostly a hollow box. That’ll be a big challenge - may need some innovative pop up roofs to mitigate that

You would have better luck with the Rivian Amazon van that maybe they will sell in the future, because you have ample head room to stand in the van, giving you way more options, and they will come out with a quite big one in the near future, the only thing i will say, if you want to make it into a full camper van, you would need the AWD version that will be available in the mountainous cold regions, also bigger batteries, but idk if Rivian will be open to sell the vans to the public after the Amazon Contract is mostly fulfilled.

By 2030 you’ll only have the choice of electric vans to convert anyway so best get on top early. The new eTransit, e-vivaro and relevant other makes by Stelantis group all making very good ev ranges with good load capabilities. They will be way less expensive than the VW variants.
@stevessub

No chance.. commercial diesel vans will be around for a lot longer than that. The UK does not have the infrastructure for commercial charging
@jonathanshutt8524
@jonathanshutt8524 2 года назад
@@stevessub I think that'll change pretty quickly, as large companies transition for financial reasons, 2nd hand ones will appear at decent prices a few years later. You're right though about the commercial charging - quite a few public charging points are behind height restriction gates, so that's going to a problem for larger vans

I agree that the VW line up is very limiting for campervan conversions. Ideally they would produce a SWB Crafter which would then enable a transverse bed and would be great competition for the Fiat Ducato and the Mercedes Sprinter.

We have a 2016 T6 that was converted in 2020 with an end kitchen, casette toilet, 4 passenger seats with belts and high roof with cental isle for ease of getting in and out of bed without having to shuffle down it as in the rock and roll version. We absolutely love it and the life of spontaneously exploring and discovering beautiful places. This is our second VW of that configuration, the last one being a 1995 T4 that we toured the UK in for 6 years (and we sold it for what we bought it for). As visually beautiful as it is, I think that VW have a long, long way to go before we would have confidence to change from diesel to electric. British caravan sites, both UK camping/motorhome/caravan clubs are going to have to install vehicle charging points on all pitches and that will be a long way off if it ever happens - will members be happy to pay for that, especially now that the cost of living has sky-rocketed? When we are in our van, I'm in no hurry to get to my destination. I want to take in the views. I want the freedom to turn off and explore tiny lanes, discover hidden beaches and panoramas without having to think where I can charge it. Once there are the same amount of charging places as fuel stations, we'll consider it, but by then, the VW Buzz as a camper will be unaffordable to most campervanners. And how will the range be affected towing a caravan or a trailer up and down some hills? As I say, for many of us, it's a long way off.

I have the original caddy camper made by VW. I like it loads better than their new california so I'm looking at the hybrid multivan or the buzz to possibly convert. I don't like pop tops - I know most people do but it makes my van cold and obvious so I don't - you should consider offering us campers who don't want a roof and definitely don't want a kitchen sink or an en-suite a very basic set up like this. My caddy is really my favourite van - though not to everyone's taste!

If I wanted an e-camper the size of the ID Buzz I would've bought into the e-NV200 which has been around for a few years and has had some nice camper conversions made on it already. But I've already had one smaller van than my current T5, and I'm not convinced I want to go that way again. I'll be very interested to see future camper setups in the ID Buzz though... But - at the moment anyway - much more curious about Jerba's Crafter project!

The Stelantis Eelcetric van is e.g. e-vivaro or equiverlent is the only viable elecric base veichle at the moment as I see it. I have an old Traffic based conversion with 213,000 miles on the clock and am seriously thinking abut what to do next. A custom conversion on one of the electric Stelantis vans is looking like what I am after. I have been driving the Traffic for the last 2 months pretending it was electric with a similar range and working out where I would go and charge it. For my typical usage at weekends with a 200-250 mile round trip it would need one charge. I often drive in the evening then eat before finding somewhere to stop. My eating stop would just need to be at a rapid charger somewhere close to the intended destination.

I am going to guess that things like water tanks are going to be a bit of an interesting issue, as they would normally be placed low (under the floor), but this space is taken up by the lithium battery, a thing which does NOT mix at all well with water.

electric cars don't lose that much (highway)range due to the weight unless u r traveling uphill, tho. i mean the Lucid Air is a heavy car but still has great consumption on the highway. if u r talking towing a trailor that is different since aerodynamics can effect the range quite a lot more than weight.

Were you looking at the external dimensions because from what I've seen elsewhere the internal space is the same as a swb T6 because the distance between wheels is the same as the T6. Crazy that they won't be launching the lwb., I can't see that decision lasting. Shame the interior is the same as the ID3 and ID4 though, b other MEB cars like the Audi and Škoda have much better interiors.

DOESNT bode at all well for a camperBuzz anytime soon. So there are really no ev camperban options in sight yet. Probably a ban with a chimney will have to do for the next few years but that sucks! Option seems to be perhaps an SUV like an Ariya with a camping kit but that has limitations and is minimalist. Sad really that things haven’t come into market faster.

The ID buzz is an e-sharan. The market value of the transporter line was better so they tried to link them. The T7 Multivan was thrown together to have a transform model in between the old and the new design. Prices were mentioned for the id.buzz were all around and above the T7 Multivan prices. I assume the prices of the cargo will be around 60-70% of that. A few years ago there were some rumours about the T7 Transporter which would be a badge engeneering together with Ford. I am not sure about the model cycle of the Transit but I assume they will come together if it is true. The fact that they wont sell the bigger cargo in the UK makes it credible.

It's a good comparison but unfortunately it's a poor Sharan replacement, at least for those with 3 or more kids and a need to tow (I've never seen anyone with a Sharan that doesn't have at least 3 kids but of course it aint pretty or 'cool' so you probably only get one if you need one). The buzz doesn't appear to have 3 independent seats with isofix and there's no data regarding towing capacity that I can find. I've had a hybrid for 6 years but also a 2.0l tdi Sharan because towing capacities and loaded range have just not been viable. I'm disappointed this doesn't appear to be taking any significant strides forward in terms of that performance. It won't be a viable electric option for many who currently have Sharans and it's strange that it's being called a bus by many reviewers. Sorry, that was a bit of a rant and not directed at you, I just picked up on the Sharan comparison. Let's hope VW do indeed have a better plan.

It can work as a straight replacement if cost is no barrier, particularly the diesel option but I’m looking out for zero emission vehicles that offer what their current diesel siblings do. I’m not wedded to the ICE and have loved the 2 hybrid cars I’ve had. Probably 80% of my miles in those have been on pure electric so I’m supportive of change, just disappointed with the rate of development and ignorance of user need as well as infrastructure limitations. Maybe I should just sell the caravan and at least one child and embrace the electric revolution 😀.

When phones got larger, they also got more battery time.. why isn't this happening with electric vehicles?
@darkcircle899
@darkcircle899 2 года назад
Because phones don’t have to deal with aerodynamics. The bigger cars have significantly worse aerodynamics than the smaller one which hampers the range. Not to mention that they have to carry more weight because there is more interior as well as more batteries because you need more power for a bigger vehicle. All of those things affect the battery life. It’s actually quite a complicated process.

Nisssan E-nv200 is not bigger, just an educated guss, but I'm pretty sure, and I've seen that as a camper (online). And the buzz is wider, so how they mean its smaller in the back I'm not shure, maybe the wide wheelbase make it look smaler just inside the talegate, or the nice panels, witch contains a subwofer, but is not wider than they need to and I hope isolates for noys and weather and seasons. But with that horizont sounds like one have to make doe for yourself your own way. And it comes to Norway this year, also as cargo version, and much is similar (but not all).
