This tutorial was extremely handy! I read reddit threads about others who have pounded on their chair cylinders for hours, unable to get separate it from the base. I used this video's tricks, and disassembled 2 chairs in 10 minutes. Cheers!

The explanation about how to set the first ring loose and tighten the second one is very crucial. Thanks for explaining that part I've been struggling for a while trying to figure out why that cylinder wouldn't pop out. Cheers!

Super easy to install. The two collars make the difference. The detailed instructions are great as well. Just remember to remove the temporary cap as instructed. Don't ask how I know. Now I'm ordering the rollerblade wheels. Thanks for such a great kit and the excellent support!

I watched the video twice before receiving the kit. I perused the directions and still managed to tighten the wrong collar. I tightened the collar nearest the base. After a few minutes of watching the collar move down the cylinder and not seeing any difference loosening of the cylinder from the base, I used common sense and tightened the second collar. That's when I had success. Now my office chair has a new lease on life and the chair raises and lowers as it was meant to. Moral of the tale: Read the instructions!

I bought their cylinder repair kit a couple of years ago and it really was that easy. I almost messed up by not removing the temporary cap, but got lucky. It was well worth the money. I liked the fact that it came with the tool to remove and the gloves were an added touch.

I watched a video on how to fix a sinking chair, and I was like, pppbbbppt, too many steps. Let's talk about buying a replacement cylinder (now that I know such a thing is possible). So I looked at the videos on the right hand sidebar and this one was at the top. Clicked on it, watched it, spent two minutes deciding, and ordered it from Office Oasis. It got to me, on the other side of the country, in two days. I'm not particular mechanical or strong or overburdened with machismo, but I was able to fix my favorite chair in less than an hour. Office Oasis rocks.

Excellent! I could have used this custom press the last time -- I ended up destroying the chair and buying a new one, then installed the taller cylinder I had already bought. I also discovered the roller blade wheels. They're great, although you might want to buy two sets, since the pressure I have put on them have caused some ball bearing leakage.

My Staples Osgood office chair had sunk practically down to the floor, and the idea of paying another overpriced $169 for a new one was really unappealing. A youtube search turned up this clear, perfectly-made video and I was sold. The kit came within two days, the replacement operation went like a charm, and the chair is now better than ever thanks to your great replacement cylinder. Bought the kit, put off using it for a while because my chair wasn't THAT bad... until it was. So I got fed up, wrestled the chair out of the office and into the living room, and swapped out the cylinder perfectly fine. The collars are an incredible idea, they popped the seat free so easily I hadn't even realized at first and had to twist the cylinder to realize it was loose! The real task was getting it out of the base, but some WD-40 and a lot of hammer whacks did the trick. I'll be recommending this to friends!

Nice video for instructions. The two-collar process is a nice touch. I Definitely Recommend those roller blades wheels. They are Excellent for the chair, rolls really smooth and nice! I don't think removing the wheels is necessary unless you are replacing them at the same time. Well done. Update.... I simply could Not remove the base from the chair. I used a hammer, used oil and everything. The piston also would Not come out from the bottom of the chair. I Finally went to a auto repair shop and a guy there used a Impact driver to get the pieces apart. Uhhh, what a job!!!

We installed both the cylinder and wheels on an aging office chair that had been sinking. Our verdict? Office Oasis makes a great product and our chair is now better than new. Soooo smooth. The hardest part we encountered was beating the cylinder out of the wheel carrier with a hammer. I'm a big guy who isn't shy with a hammer, but it took at least a dozen hard blows. Even the hydraulic ram flew out before I could dislodge the cylinder. If I had the job to do over again, I'd go get a 10 lb sledgehammer first.

This tool really works! Thank you for the video! Five stars for the product, 5 stars for this video and 0 stars for the instruction leaflet inside the kit. WARNING: Follow the instructions in this video, and not the instruction leaflet which comes with the product!!! The instructions leaflet which comes with the kit is WRONG, it tells you to tighten both rings, however, you need to leave the ring closest to the cylinder seating slightly loose so that it can move up and down, as instructed in the video. I tried everything to remove the old cylinder, wrench, hammer, twisting, oil, time and time again. I even took the seat to our local garage, where the guys used their professional car tools, but nothing worked. Then I came across a homemade video by a guy who used the tool, and after some searching, I finally found this professional video, which allowed me to find the product on Amazon. The next day, the product arrived, and after a couple of attempts (to get the right level of tightening of the rings), the rings did their job! Such a satisfying feeling!

I have a cheap gaming chair with its cylinder broken less than a year after purchase. The inner cylinder goes all the way down and won't go up using the lever or even after pulling it hard when the chair is upside down. So what I did yesterday was actually pry out the locking ring at the bottom of the cylinder ( the thing with a clip underneath 7:25 ). This let the inner cylinder to slide out. Then, I fill the outer cylinder hole at approximately 60% with some nut and bolts. After that, I put back the inner cylinder and now it can only go 40% in, which raised back the chair to the level I'm comfortable with. So, if you guys happen to have some nuts and bolts laying around , and decided there is only one level of height you're comfortable with, and also have no intention to replace the cylinder, this is something else you can do to get your chair working again.

I had a ridiculously difficult time tapping the old cylinder out of the base. I was using a hand sledge and it wouldn’t budge. Finally I put some white lithium grease around the bottom and used a heat gun to melt it into the base. After that it came out in just a few taps. But because I had been hammering so hard I mushroomed the bottom of the cylinder which prevented it from slipping out. I had to cut the mushroomed bottom off with a Dremel to finally remove it. I coated the new cylinder with white lithium grease so maybe it will be easier next time.

Freakin' brilliant. :) I got a refurb Steelcase Leap V2 chair which I'm liking a lot, but the poorly photocopied instructions didn't make it clear at all that the side pin needed to be engaged with the height adjustment lever in order to...you know, adjust the height. @@jefmes I got mine out by putting the chair on it's back, putting a pipe wrench with a 24" cheater bar, and basically put one foot on one of the lower parts of the arm rest and the other foot on the Pipewrench and eventually got it nocked loose. BTODtv has a decent video on how to remove the gas cylinder (they make it look way easier than it is) and they talk about older models having the side pin and how to engage it toward the end of the video. I had to use like a 3lb brass hammer and a piece of 2x4 on the bottom of the gas cylinder to get it out of the base. I used a holesaw on a old work bench to fit the base into so I wouldn't mess up any of the wheel arms of the base. Luckily I was able to reuse the gas cylinder by wrapping a few layers of electrical tape around the cylinder to raise the chair back up. I just bought a refurb steelcase Amia for my wife for $60 and I half to say ... It's more comfortable than my leap v2. Bottom seat cushion has more padding and the rest of the chair feels nearly identical to my leap. I plan on going back and buying another Amia for my work office.

the rollerblade wheels are great!!! its just that they dont really last long in my experiences. i tried from several companies and it never took very long for the little balls to come out of part between the wheel and the "holder". so your wheel will go lean. would be great to have double wheels i think.... would make the risk smaller of the thing going lean

I can see by the end of the clip, you managed to push the cylinder really deep, almost two inches through the casters piece... How did you do that?

i have troublle pounding out my old cylander. this is what I was worried about. I am using WD40 to spray both top and bottom to see if that would help. a few hours did not . so I will try again leaving it over night so much for sleeping in this chair tonight.

Unfortunately, the type of chair I had the cylinder so tight that the shaft collars kept getting further apart no matter how much I tightened them. The good news is that the chair was manually tightened to its most upright position, so it still worked without replacing the shaft.

I used some sandpaper to rough up the chrome shaft and it worked like a charm.

Do the cylinders come in different lengths?

My work was throwing away an old office chair. They never told me why but I asked if I could have it and they gave it to me for free. Found out the chair would slowly sink as I was sitting in it. Bought the cylinder kit and it worked like a charm. I later looked up the chair model and learned that the chair was around $300. I feel like a got a crazy bargain.

I need to replace the star, keeping the original cylinder. The 'hammer' process to extract, may damage the cylinder?
