Hi! I so appreciate and enjoy your channel. One thing I’d like to ask is if it would be possible for you start including the projected monthly energy costs of these homes (like when you buy a regular home, the owners must provide monthly energy bill estimates) and if the homes are solar-panel ready. It’s really an important part of decision-making, as many people want carbon-neutral or all-electric homes now. Thank you!

Beautiful product. But keep in mind that permit approvals and inspections will make this approach a real challenge as it's foreign made. Each state and jurisdiction has its codes and they are NOT translatable to Spanish codes. In WA prefab structures go thru a special review involving state L&I and the units get inspected during fabrication. Not sure how this process could even work. Would love to see a video getting into the nuts and bolts of all that.

"A KEU for Kerry"... has a nice ring to it. Still, I do see a few things that are concerning. With it's severe box-like exterior, there looks to be many cracks and crevices for rain to do considerable damage over the long haul. For instance, when rain puddles up on the roof, especially the glass portion, how will the water escape? Will rain eat away at the seals between the panels? Also, without overhangs, how will water flow off the roof and the tops of the exterior window ledges? I could see rain causing permanent streaks on the exterior panels too, though that could look great over time. Another concern I have are the windows, most clearly seen at 1:39. I've see these types of windows frequently, where the latch opens the windows sideways but the problem is that these types of windows barely crack open. Not being able to open windows fully feels claustrophobic and would inhibit airflow. These types of windows are common in newer European housing. The long horizontal window in the kitchen looks to have a similar mechanism, if it opens at all. I do hope all of those LED lights are on dimmer switches too. They can be annoying at full brightness. My third issue is with the high top table in the kitchen. In two words, "impractical and hideous", or is that three words? Who wants to step up into a cheesy restaurant style high chair every time you have a meal? Good luck trying to feed babies and youngsters from that type of dining table too. Of course, there's a solution. Buy a KEU 2.1 and sit on the couch to eat your chorizo tacos, just like Kerry. Whoops... "Honey, I spilled the Tabasco on the white boucle!"

As an FYI - size does matter. The $10k shipping is at best really, really rough. Deck space on a ship costs. Can these be stacked with containers? If not that effects shipping costs, as well. So, while the $10k is a bit helpful, is it a average, a conservative guess or? So, in summary, the smaller unit should be a bit less costly than bigger ones to ship. For what that nugget of insight is worth.🤷🏻‍♀️ Says a fan girl in Kentucky.

So are we all supposed to be getting excited about modern trailer park living, with LED lights and unnecessarily WiFi connected household items? I’m all for sustainability and practicality, but it seems the trend is simply; get as many people back into shotgun houses, row houses, trailer parks, and basic workers quarters. I like this idea but something in the 600 sq ft range might be easier to live in without feeling claustrophobic imo. Then you need to buy the land, live in a temperate climate without severe heat or cold, connect to municipal services for hydro, gas/propane/solar, water, sewer, and finally do they conform with town/city codes and bylaws. It's still a nice way to live minimally.

I spent 7 years planning for exactly that and then finally built, finishing 2 years ago. Took me forever to find a location with decent climate, affordable land with lake and mountain views. Bought the land first 6 years before building. It was undeveloped land but right off the road where I could get power from the street (huge savings the closer you are to that street for power). I knew I had 7 years before moving so I took each step pretty slow. First thing I did was a property survey. It included to determine the property line, topographic, soil, floodplan, sub-surface for septic or well, etc. Cost me $400. Next I hired an Architect and began a long 6 year journey with him. I didn't have all the money upfront to do this project at once but I did have the time so I decided to approach it as "pay as you go." I worked with my Architect to do the whole project in stages over 5 years (ultimately took 6 years). This gave me time to save up for each stage. Long story short, I bought a acre million dollar view land with 270 degree lake views on top of a hill for $31k in Glenhaven California (Clear Lake). It's breathtaking, at least to me. My point is, the process you laid out about buying land, permitting, etc can still be achievable AND affordable even today with the sky-high housing market if you take the time to look, research, and maybe even sacrifice some of the things you initially wanted. For me, that sacrifice was giving up living near a large city. I had to for the lake and mountain views I wanted on a low budget. I'm about an hour and a half from Sacramento and 2.5 hours away from San Francisco. Lots of small towns are all around me so it actually turned out that I didn't sacrifice that at all because I'm not missing it. I bought a used 34 ft 5th wheel camping trailer for $19k and parked it right on my land while construction was going on. Took over a year to build the house but honestly, I was rethinking my whole life existence while living in the 5th wheel. It was NICE! I could have easily lived in that thing with those views of the lake and mountain. Could have bought the land, bought a bigger 5th wheel trailer all under $100k. Much lower than a 100k but I like landscaping so that would cost me up to that $100k mark. There's still plenty of lake/mountain land here for sale that's affordable. Look up Glenhaven, Clear Lake, or Kelseyville California. You may be shocked at the price of land here with miliion dollar views.

No one ever seems to talk about acquiring replacement parts decades down the road, when the company no longer exists, or is no longer producing said parts. How is one meant to maintain a non-standardized home in the long-run?

Hi Kerry. I'm looking to retire within the next year or so and move from California to Colorado where my daughter and her family live. I'm exploring options and love the tiny house concept and pre-mfg homes, however finding places to put them are few and far between. The zoning required is for RVs & mobile homes. Since trailer parks have a bad reputation, no one wants to live near them. So, they're either remote and not convenient to good medical, which is essential for me, or they're not in great areas. And the incredibly rare location in a great area has a $1.5M buy-in, which is absurd and defeats the purpose. How long do you think it will take communities and politicians to wake up to the fact that most people in America cannot afford the 'American Dream' home? Are you aware of any substantive initiatives on the horizon which will enlighten the U.S. to smaller, more stream-lined living spaces similar to much of Europe, Scandavia, and Japan? Any guidance for how I can make my downsized dream retirement home come to fruition? (North Denver to Fort Collins, Loveland, Boulder quadrant) Thanks! Anita

In California, zoning has changed so that such units can be placed in backyards to help ease the housing shortage. First check to see if it's doable to put such a unit on a family member's property. If not, see if a zoning variance can be obtained for such a "mother-in-law" unit. The other way to go is to find a property in an area you want that is or can be zoned commercial for a hotel/motel and then develop that property with 6 or more units and you live in one. I own a 3 unit Airbnb in a residential neighborhood that I was able to get zoned legally as a hotel. In conclusion, yes, communities need to zone for such high-end small smart homes. I think most communities, and I agree, don't want ugly RV and mobile home parks. This will change as such units become more widely known.

I have the same situation. I've been googling 'Accessory Dwelling Unit' or ADU as that is a term that seems to be in a lot of town ordinances. That may help.

Yeap, everyone wants one but zoning just about everywhere is a no go. I am in GA and these will never be allowed all the white trash in the 70's and 80's with their single Wides ruined it for ever!

I think they are going to have add an additional model called the "ExtraWide", too many Americans are rotund.

Very cool looking home Kerry. Thanks. Love your food references. The dry humor is priceless. You may have already covered this in other videos, but I'm curious about weathering on and life of these prefab homes. What is the durability of these homes? Is it better, the same or worse than traditional homes.
