Taping off their application so it looks nice speaks volumes to the quality of installer and top down vision for the Company and ultimately the Customer. Well done.
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb 4 года назад
Huh? He's marketing his own product - there is no reason to spend the time to tape the openings to get nice pretty lines - it simply wastes expensive product and requires more labor to install and remove and creates more unnecessary waste
@soving
@soving 4 года назад
@@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb its called workmanship. The dood is also a builder and that is his crew. Nothing better to promote the Product and Company more than a pretty install. Yes, it takes a bit more time and some tape...but nothing turns a potential Customer off more than shitty sloppy install. He said the reasons why they tape it off. That home might sit for 6 weeks before the next stage. With your reasoning, why would a company even pick up their garbage or use tradespeople vs students. There is a reason why Ed is the owner and inventor and you are the critic.

Sems an expensive option. For window bucks redguard and for their joints a compatible caulk. For the entirety of the concrete (in form of an admix) there are waterproofing concentrates you can put into your concrete at time of mic so the entire wall, slab, roof deck are all waterproof. Xypex concentrate is the product name. Not saying tour method doesnt work, but whatever can lower cost esp in labor and creates superior results, Im all for. Love your show all the same!
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb

Using a low water-cement ratio is just as effective as adding Xypex
@yusuihang
@yusuihang 4 года назад
1:52 - they did not treat the cut end of the pressure treated wood before using it on window opening. Also, shouldn't they have applied the blue barrier to the side of the wood that is making direct contact with the cement block? Wouldn't water get to the wood through the cement block?
@mattybosplatty

As mentioned in the video, the entire face of the block wall will be coated with a spray-applied water-resistive barrier (it might also be the air and vapour barrier-not knowing the complete wall assembly, I can't say for sure). This will tie-in with the flashings shown, so the block will not be subject to rain.

It's good to see chemistries evolving from water-based, evaporating liquids to MS polymer 'curing' liquids. But there's still no magic bullet. SA membranes still have challenges around 'origami' detailing, adhesion, wicking, compatibility and 'fishmouths'. Liquid membranes still have challenges around continuity/film thickness, adhesion and compatibility to adjacent systems. At the end of the day a successful install still comes down to good workmanship and better verification of said workmanship.

Mmm now you got me thinking!! Water base VS stpe base, I have to give Google a try 🤔 if you have any links feel free to share them pls. I'm an stucco contractor located at PA and as part of my water resistant barrier system I was planning to offer to my customer a liquid barrier membrane, 2 layers of grade D paper and rainscreen followed by a 3 coat stucco system.
@frauleingermany4435
@frauleingermany4435 Год назад
@@macrapidito1 I think the membranes are better since the fumes from the liquid adds to the problem of global warming and the stink that the new owners have to breath in. Using water base is a step in the right direction but zero fumes is what we are aiming. Stucco in PA is that Pennsylvania, I thought that was a icy snowy state where stucco only last 1 or 2 seasons and the ice chips away at the finish. We use stone or brick finishes in the snowy areas with a siding and and upper finish.

Having been through numerous real estate boom and bust cycles here in Florida, Ive seen each generation of house time tested since the 1970s. While overall techniques seem to improve, there have been MANY so called state of the art materials and techniques that have failed. I would love to see more about the testing and track-record and less of this guy dismissing every question. That was the driest PT Ive seen on a site, how does it hold up when the PT is dripping wet, and your guys are not the framing crew? Not saying tape is better but pure silicon aquarium sealant would break adhesion.

A cold joint is when you add new concrete onto concrete that is already set up, like if you run out of concrete with a wall form halfway full and then finish filling it the next day. Another example is if you add a concrete column onto an existing concrete pad.

I live in South Africa and our building methods are very different. We primarily build with clay brick and mortar and use cavity walls and we dont have the same moisture problems that is refered to in the video. I am curious as to why brick isnt really used in the states. Is it the cost aspect or is it other factors?
@NCPanthersfan27705
@NCPanthersfan27705 5 лет назад
Brick cavity walls are extremely common in the US especially in the southern US. Clay brick is porous therefore allowing moisture into the cavity. A weather barrier of some type is necessary in cavity wall construction to protect the structure from the moisture migration into the cavity. Fluid-applied is the way to go.

Concrete may be a sponge when it comes to water but the way my uncle who's a builder in the Orlando area says it doesn't absorb as much water as you'd think. The greatest thing he claims is bugs hate it, doesn't rot, very tight, good sound deadening characteristics, solid as a rock, withstand hurricanes and tornadoes, doesn't burn, and he claims that it has a higher ability to stop the transfer of heat rather than slow it down. Reason for my my family's 4000sq/ft home only running a 250-300 electric bill for a 50 year old home with no insulation in the dead of summer.

How do you do floor joists for a second story on a concrete house? Ideally, you would want them supported by the concrete wall, but I don't see how you can do that here. The interior framing is usually minimal. Would you just have to go with full scale interior framing and build it on top of that?
@anonymousbyproxy8250
@anonymousbyproxy8250 3 года назад
There are two ways : concrete floors or plywood (or OSB) on floor wood trusses. If area is small : concrete floors are ok but they are expensive to make and not many masons have the forms and poles needed for the pour. In US since rooms are very large : the common method is plywood over wood trusses. The trusses are attached to the concrete wall by sitting them in metal brackets made by Simpson Co.(NYSE:SSD). Those brackets are embedded between the concrete blocks at the time when wall is elevated.

Why is block building not as common as here in the UK?
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb 4 года назад
The US and Canada have vast forests. Plus wood is a carbon sink (the ultimate green building material), while cement production (used in blocks/concrete/mortar) is one of the most energy-intensive materials on the planet, making blocks relatively expensive. Plus wood is a lot easier to install - a small house can be framed/dried-in in a few days. UK doesn't have much wood, so they use block/brick a lot more.
