Ever since I made my Inazuma Eleven review the series has been on my mind again. I kept playing the games on the side and even started to rewatch the series. Inazuma Eleven is very infectious but there was a new thing that kept reminding me of the series. which were the many comment on my video. I was really glad to see that the fandom and interest in Inazuma Eleven was still alive. but one particular thing kept returning in those comments… Inazuma Eleven GO.
In my video I made a comment that I stopped watching Inazuma Eleven GO halfway as some choice were made and a certain direction was taken that I didn’t like. Of course the first series also had its choices and took directions that I felt very mixed about but it all still worked and fitted in the series. Yet when it came to Inazuma Eleven GO it felt too different and just not for me so I gave up on it… until recently.
Luckily I could remember next to nothing about the Inazuma Eleven GO anime. The last time I watched it was still being aired so that was a long time ago. and story in the anime always differs a little bit from the game. So I would say I was able to going in to Inazuma Eleven GO Light & Shadow with as little pre knowledge as was possible. I did take a quick sneak peek at the gameplay which looked almost the exact same as the other games but with a nice graphical upgrade. Funny enough despite my mixed feel for the anime I was really looking forward to play Inazuma Eleven GO Light & Shadow. Though I was prepared for the same results as I had with the anime but I was just as prepared to be pleasantly surprised by it as well.
So with all that in mind let’s kick off and see if Inazuma Eleven GO Light & Shadow is a good game.

I had the same issue with GO's special moves. Good thing the second and third games in the GO series diversify the move list. New moves, old moves from the original trilogy, the moves sometimes WORK in different ways, even a ton of new spirits; there's a lot more to play around with.

I see I see, well I am looking forward to it whenever I get to it! Though for now I need a little break from the Inazuma Eleven games.

I will say one thing to 'defend' the low move count of these games... It is most likely done intentional, as it makes narrative sense. I don't remember which character said it, but there is a conversation where they literally say that Fifth Sector controls everything, including who gets which moves. So having a lot of players know similar moves makes sense from that point. Fifth Sector is intentionally limiting the move count of people, to keep a balance. This is also why most of the characters who have more unique moves, are either the SEEDs from Fifth Sector, or part of the resistence; as they are either trained to be strong (think of Victor, or Rex Remmington), or are doing their own thing and ignore the rules, giving them freedom to learn their own moves. Also gameplay-wise, spirits kindof add to the special move list. wether that's a good thing or not is easily debatable, but it is a point to keep in mind. Also I think your "school name" arguement is kinda... debatable. In season 1, we had: Wild Jr High, Brainwashing Jr High, Shuriken Jr High, Farm Jr High, Zeus Jr High. Aint no way in hell ANY place is gonna name their school "brainwashing". Not to mention that all these names are just "[description of theme] Jr High". putting Jr High behind something, does not make it a school name. On that note, multiple points of criticism in this video also apply to the original trilogy games (e.g. the level of recruits, albeit not AS big as the GO games), yet were not named in the first video (for one reason or another, possibly due to time save) also the fighting spirit counterplay is not really correct. sure for the main game, you become unstopable with a spirit (except by other spirits)... but charging into every enemy will quickly drain the spirit's presence. meanwhile when an opponent uses a spirit, you can counter by barraging that player with attacks and moves, empying their spirit before they can make a shot. The numbers on this are not well balanced, but that's really it; a numbers issue, not a design issue. also, no mention on the absolutely amazing OST?

@Lusius8879 Not sure if it makes narritve sense, as from the beginning of the story most moves are depicted as results of hardwork put in by the characters themselves to develop as players. Later it gets a bit cheap on how fast new moves are learned but regulating the moves that are used/learned is quite nearly impossible as according to the story everyone can make one when training hard. Even in GO this freedom excist cus Fifth sector controlls football as a sport not the backyard of every home, street and grassfield in the country. It makes sense that SEED and resistence players make their own moves but I find it very unlikly that nobody else is developing moves or are always picked up by fifth sector the moment they do. So while its nice they tried to put in story reasons and make Fifth sector even more depressing for the sport I do find it a very big stretch and goes a bit against the message of working hard to improve and become stronger that (especially in early story) revolves around these moves. Well the school names just describing the theme is precicily why those names work so well and why just normal school names in GO work counter productive. It not only gives character to the entire team and moves sets but it makes them in general more memorable. When you mention those names I instantly know which team, almost all players by looks, particular moves they have and where in the story they came in. For GO I have a much harder time with that and I have to resort to calling them by number order you face them rather than character. I did not experiance the level gap as a big issue in the original trilogy as the leveling process was more fun to do as I was actively designing my character to fit in my team. be that by theme, move set, etc. Something that is much harder to do in GO Light & Shadow. The counterplay against spirits you described I used and that is where the design issue comes in. Especially if you play beyond the story. You and your opponent spam spirits until the match is over, yes you can drain their spirit meter by throwing all players in to them. But does that feel tactical? does that reward your hardwork to put in the right player at the right spot to take advantage of its stats and element? Sending in your players as cannon fodder should not be a rewarding tactic or should come with a downside like in the original trilogy. And let say you back a player that uses a spirit, if it scored or not doesnt matter. you spend 1/4 of the match running after it, depleeting it just to survive the storm... only for the opponent to summon another one and the whole thing starts over. It also makes feel every match visually repetative as most spirits are clones of each other and their moves are all the same if they arent main character spirits. This emphasizes the lack of moves and choices I described in my review. and its this heavy focus on the usage of spirits is by design not just a deal of numbers. Originally the review was 30+ min long which was just too much, there for I unfortunately had pick topics/aspects of the game I thought where more important to focus on. I planned to get back to the music in later games when I would get around to review them. However the annoyance of the spirit mechanics and with the upcomming new Inazuma Eleven game my plan to play the other GO games kinda fell off for the time being :/

The gameplay is defiantly the best part of the game, its enjoyable though I preff the older 3 games over this one. Though according to some the squeals after Inazuma Eleven GO are a lot better.

"Shooting a shot with the power of a supernova" **Inazuma 11 Go Supernova sweating in the back** In all seriousness, Go Chrono Stones is considered one of the absolute best games in the series overall, and with the recent fan translation of 3, people are really enjoying it as well.

What’s worse about Kageyama Hikaru/ Lucian Dark is that the next mention about his relationship with Ray Dark was in Go Galaxy… THE GAME and it’s one line that is easily skippable. It’s frustrating when you know the “plot twist” of Ray Dark being the coach. I love Go but the potential for most characters is wasted so bad which is so frustrating

Awesome review. I sort of agree with your point on fighting spirits. I like the idea but the execution was done a bit poorly, both in the anime and in the game. When a player activates their fighting spirit, they are suddenly this almost unstoppable force, and the match starts to be focused more around spirits than the players themselves. In the show, whenever an opponent showed their spirit, or was revealed to be a Seed (which means they were trained by Fifth Sector and obtained a spirit), suddenly all of Raimon seemed to be scared of that player or just shift all of their attention on them; which gives a select few players all of the spotlight, while stealing it away from those who do not have a fighting spirit. In my opinion, Chrono Stones and Galaxy executed their new power mechanics better, but this problem of players stealing the spotlight off others who can't keep up with the power scaling still exists to some extent.
@GreiratEinzel

I think that is why I also strayed away from the anime :/ felt less like a team effort and more like a hand full of characters fighting for the spotlight. I hope soon to dive in to Chrono Stones but the fighting spirits have actively kept me away from trying cus I just dont enjoy the aspect :/

As a big inazuma fan I agree with the majority of things you said on both reviews, for the community in general this was a very hit/miss game, inazuma 3s had a lackluster story but the gameplay was surprisingly complex and made for very diverse teams and strategies (in spain there is actually a decent competitive community around the game and the tournaments are very impressive to watch!) In go as you mentioned gameplay isnt as refined, avatars are poorly balanced, goalkeepers might as well not exist and it lacks fluidity and speed compared to the ds games, on the other hand the story was more fleshed out and engaging as oposed to "win this tournament" in 3. It was very refreshing to see your take on the games as someone who didnt "grow" with them, I am glad you took your time to play them and got to appreciate what made these titles so important to a lot of people, hopefully the new switch games can pump some life into the series Ill be waiting for your review then :)
@GreiratEinzel
@GreiratEinzel 2 года назад
always good to see another Inazuma Eleven fan! I suspect that I enjoy the story of the ds game because of the anime as well. the GO anime is were I dropped out while I cant count how many times I watched and played Inazuma Eleven. Still in GO it was kinda wasteful that characters felt so blend and the main three characters were attempted to be fleshed out further. kinda hoping for a comeback race on that in the next installment once I get to it. oof the new switch games... I havent given up hope on them yet but unfortunately they seem to be stuck in dev hell :/ but once they come out I am playing them cus otherwise I bought a switch for nothing xD

I swear I will never be able to distinguish between Almighty Faith and Milky Way Charter because one of them had Infinity Beyond who belonged to a very hostile team but both of them are hostile so I always get confused lol.
