The Los Angeles Chargers are completely holding their Quarterback Justin Herbert back. Herbert is one of the best QBs in the NFL, but the Chargers have underperformed this year, and so has he. They have plenty of issues and most of them rest on the shoulders of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. What is he doing wrong and can Justin Herbert overcome it? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the 2022 Los Angeles Chargers Quarterback Justin Herbert.

@@notfromhere8889 Allen and Williams are tall 50/50 ball winners who don't separate. Thing is Herbert's talent that can help get those guys the despite that is his processing ability. He just sees the defense faster and with arm strength can probably place the ball in tighter windows better than most NFL QBs can. The problem is Lombardi only cares to throw behind the sticks 70% of the time and then go for deep shots in bad 3rd and long situations. I mean these things aren't new either. Bills recognized Josh Allen needs a guy who can catch his fastballs wherever so they went hard for STefon Diggs. Cards recognized they needed a great pair of hands to go with Kyler so they went out to get DHop. We just saw the Dolphins sell hard to get Tyreek Hill but also get an offensive minded coach with Mike McDaniel who knows how to use those receivers to get the most out of Tua. Eagles took AJ Brown off the Titans hands with a tradea AND paid him an extension so Jalen Hurts has a target upt he middle. Burrow was fortunate to have Boyd, Higgins and his college star teammate Ja'Marr Chase early in his career. Some teams totally believe in the ability of their young QB that they will get the best talent in the market for them.

Finest example was the Fins game. Granted Tua was getting flexed on the other side but Herbert with holes for an O-line and a scheme making him check down often was progressing through reads so fast and navigating the pocket through pressure that he was still getting to Mike Williams for a screen or Keenan Allen on a paltry 15-20 yard gain on a mismatch. His A-Dot on his passes was something short too in the process. Put him with the Washington C-words with receivers like McLaurin/Samuel/Dotson and he's catching those guys downfield every time. Arm strength is the last best him thing about him when he does all the consistent QB stuff like coverage reading/pocket footwork and post snap reads at an elite baseline level.

The funniest part is the QBs got got drafted in his same class have been given better weapons and better responsibilities too. Burrow has evolved so far with taking less hits in the pocket while playing more shotgun and learning to play without Chase for a while. Tua is of course enjoying an offensive playcaller who understands his ability to read coverages and get to his targets on time and quickly. Meanwhile Herbert is playing Charger checkdown even when he has the the arm strength to threaten defenses that he can go deep even for 50/50 balls. But too often the plays he runs are just routes that don't go beyond the sticks.

Doing the math based off his 73 receptions, Ekeler on average catches the ball 1.4 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I don't know if there has been a player, ever, to on average catch a ball that far back. 1.4 YARDS BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE.

And during the interview it was mentioned that the offense was not designed for something like that. Or something along those lines. One hell of a red flag now that I think of it. Talk about putting some handcuffs on Herbert. Was wondering if anyone else remembered something similar?

Great breakdown! I gotta push back on hating on the chargers weapons though. Herbert came into one of the best situations a rookie QB could come into as far as weapons go. He had two B+/A WRs. He gotta find a way to make that work IMO.

Thanks Mike! I don't hate the weapons, I just think they're missing that key speed piece. I love MW but he's a very specific type of player (also he's hurt all the time), Keenan might be done, and Ekeler is fucking awesome, but he's not going to attack you down the field obviously

This is exactly what he did to Stafford in Detroit in 2014. He had Calvin Johnson and Stafford when he still had a cannon and they just did this dink and dunk bullshit. Their offense was so predictable multiple defenders from other teams said how they knew exactly what they were doing pre snap. After that joke was finally fired he tried to throw Stafford under the bus, basically saying he wasn't smart enough to understand the system and multiple teammates immediately came out calling bullshit. This asshole wasted the one year the Lions actually had a historically good defense and I am actually shocked that he got another OC job after he absolutely demolished a good Lion's offense.

As a Chargers fan I can’t tell you how frustrating it is watching our games. We have someone who can make any throw at any time, as good as anyone ever…and we are checking down for 2 yards or a loss on 1st and 10, 2nd and 10, and 3rd and 10. We also have a fantastic running back but our run game is so predictable due to us getting zero yard on first and second down, he has to fight tooth and nail for anything. Some things are down to bad luck, offensive line being hurt and losing our 2 best receivers for multiple games, but the complete lack of creativity in our scheming and play calling is ruining us. We have talent on that side of the ball, just not at the drawing table

I mean I don’t know why anyone would be surprised about this. The chargers held back Phillip rivers for 17 years, why did anyone think Justin Herbert would be any different? As long as Herbert is with the chargers, he’ll suffer the same fate as Phillip rivers. Plus Phillip rivers played against Tom Brady, Peyton manning, and Ben roethlisberger whereas Justin Herbert plays against joe burrow, Patrick mahomes, josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, an tua. So the result clearly won’t be the same right?

100 percent agree the coaching of the chargers completely changed the teams identity and made it even worse than it was, we used to lose but the team did look good and felt like a curse and games were always exciting , now we lose and we also suck and its not even fun to watch anymore, lets see if it can be fixed with this new staff

As slow as Herbert's receiver talent is, one thing Lombardi has not taken advantage is his QBs ability to process the coverage very quickly. Even with a crappy O-line Herbert can still get the ball out which usually ends up in checkdowns because of how the plays are designed. Its not like the concept has not been tested as last season in the 2nd half of the season the numbers were there and even Alex brought that up. And that was with relatively the same receiver group they had. For Herbert to reach his peak like the class of QBs he was drafted with in Burrow and Tua, Chargers ownership has to have an adult in the room to help build things. None of this stubborness from Lombardi or even to Staley which is start studded defense has also underperformed. Get a guy who is about getting results and surrounding the players with a great staff and work towards Justin's best self for contract #2. Unless Telesco is still there to curse things up.

This is a great great video. all of us Justin Herbert fans and charger fans, we know this. but I don't believe they're going to be any changes until the mainstream media sports channels start blasting Joe Lombardi all over the sports news. for his silly and incompetent Analytics. it is great that RU-vid channels are criticizing Joe Lombardi and diagnosing the problem. but I think for now Joe Lombardi's protected because the mainstream media such as the ESPN shows and Fox Sports shows. they are not criticizing Joe Lombardi so hopefully these type of RU-vid videos will become part of mainstream media and then this will force the charges to make the coaching changes

Herbert destroyed the dolphins coverage by taking it underneath basically the whole game. a good quarterback knows where to go with the football, deep or short or intermediate. it was strange to see Tua forcing it downfield all game with hardly any checkdowns... like 25 air yards average per throw.. Chargers knew he was gonna do that and stopped him. Dolphins expected Herbert to launch it downfield and looked confused defensively the whole game. Winning is more important that big throws.
@t4d0W
@t4d0W Год назад
Fins are primarily a man coverage defense who LOVES to blitz and that combination is where Herbert absolutely cooks. The factof with the Dolphins winning wasn't predicated on their defense (Lombardi's offense does NOT win consistently and especially against better defenses) but the Fins having their way on offense. Big throws is predicated to winning especially when you have the match up and instead trying to get a first down, you actually try to score. Ask the Niners about it since they also shellacked the Chargers and put Herbert on his back.
