The Night the Sooners Said No 

In the mid-50s the Sooners freshmen football team went to play the U. of Tulsa freshmen. After the game, the team went to a big downtown Tulsa restaurant for dinner. But, when it refused to serve Prentice Gautt, the only black player for the Sooners, the entire team walked out in protest. The story is told by Lew Ferguson, a retired AP bureau chief who as a student working in the OU sports PR office witnessed the event. Dr. Gautt went on to be a scholar and top executive with the Big 12 Conference until his untimely death.
