*THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS* is SO FREAKY!!! | First Time Watching (reaction/commentary/review) 

Jack had innocent intentions, he was just bored, restless, and depressed, and despite being popular no one really knew him. I see it as a movie not just about accepting who you are, but about rekindling passion.

Just because no one else has said it yet, just want to give the man Henry Selick the credit he so deserves for directing this masterpiece. It’s Burton’s poem, but Selick’s movie! And one I’ve immensely loved for years.

I don't know who may have said this already, but i think the point of the "split personalities" of the mayor is that he's a politician with two faces. A two-faced politician.

there is prologue ending that never made the movie, a narrator says something like this: "And finally, everything worked out just fine. Christmas was saved, though there wasn't much time. But after that night, things were never the same. Each holiday now knew the other one's name. And though that one Christmas, things got out of hand. I'm still rather fond of that skeleton man. So, many years later, I thought I'd drop in. And there was old Jack, still looking quite thin, With four or five skeleton children at hand, Playing strange little tunes in their xylophone band. And I asked old Jack, "Do you remember the night When the sky was so dark and the moon shone so bright? When a million small children pretending to sleep Nearly didn't have Christmas at all, so to speak? And would, if you could, turn that mighty clock back To that long, fateful night, now, think carefully, Jack Would you do the whole thing all over again Knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then?" And he smiled, like the old Pumpkin King that I knew Then turned and asked softly to me, "Wouldn't you?""

The fact that the entire premise of the film is that Jack gets burned out so he tries something off the wall, and it ends up inspiring him for Halloween again, speaks volumes to anyone who has ever run into a creative block in their favorite hobby. In that way, Jack is very relatable.

Jack was stuck in a rut, bored and depressed with the repetitiveness of his role. He thought stealing Christmas was the answer, but what he really needed was to take that ambition into his own holiday. I'd say he was also pretty lonely despite being so popular.

To answer your question, Danny Elfman himself is the one singing Jack's songs. He is only the singing voice, however.

I watched the director's commentary. They said every time a clay artist was in between projects and had a spare moment they were told to make bugs for the boogeyman.

Fun fact about this movie: It is all stop motion filmed. They literally made the characters and set and posed the whole movie.

I always felt like it was about trying to be someone you're not and learning to accept yourself as you are. Sometimes you CAN feel dissatisfied with who you are and feel like you need a change, but drastically trying to be someone you are not, isn't the answer. About the Mayor, he’s literally a two-faced politician! There’s even a joke near the beginning-when he’s ringing Jack’s doorbell-where he says he’s only an elected official who can’t make decisions on his own. A little jab at politics 😊

For the record, kids can really love this film. Case in point, it's been my nephew's favorite since he was four. Great reaction!

"Kidnap the Sandy Claws" has always been my favorite song of this movie.

The voice of Jack is Danny Elfman, who has collaborated with Tim Burton on many projects, mainly writing iconic scores for many of his films (he even wrote The Simpsons theme tune). His film scores are very recognisable and unique. He had some fabulous albums with his band, Oingo Boingo in the 1980s, as lead singer. I highly recommend in particular, listening to their album, 'Dead Man's Party', its like listening to a Jack Skellington pop album! It's an absolute classic!

Shocked you didn't recognize Jack. So many people start wearing their Nightmare Before Christmas clothing starting in October all the way through December. His face is everywhere. 😁 Perhaps you've seen it but just saw it as a regular skeleton head. I'm sure you'll notice now though.

I think you may have missed the part saying Jack is the pumpkin king. Like he's the actual ruler of Halloween. That's why everyone is going along with it and not rejecting him or his ideas.

I love Jack Skellington ❤ though he was wanting to give a Vacation to Santa by taking care of Christmas for that year, his intentions wasn’t Wrong u know 😊 he was too naive to realize it sooner but when he did he made things right ❤ the scene where Jack falling into the arms of the angel is such a soft touch showing he’s not a bad guy by choice but that’s just what his job is.

Funny you mention home alone because I only learned very recently that the mom from that movie does the main female voices (Sally and the creepy kid Shock) in this movie.

I always find it funny and cute that the 20-odd year old reactors find this movie creepy. I saw it when i was 11 and adored it. I don't think i recall anyone saying it was creepy, back then. I'm curious if people around my age (late 30s) feel the same? Since people are giving factoids, here's another one: Lock (little devil kid) was voiced by Paul Reubens, most commonly remembered for being Pee Wee Hermann. I absolutely love this film! I've seen it more times than I can count and yet I only realised recently that the voice of Sally is Catherine O'hara, the mum from Home Alone! Which I've also seen more times than I can count so I really should have noticed a lot sooner 😂😂

I watched this when it first came out in theaters, and used to have the CD of the soundtrack. But hadn't watched it since the 90s, until I watched it with my best friend a few years ago. I'd forgotten how wonderful it is. And I sang along to every song. It all came back to me, the mark of good writing. 😊

i’m always curious whether people consider this a christmas or halloween movie! i grew up watching it as a halloween movie but i definitely see it as a christmas movie now lol. either way it’s such a comfort movie for me, i’m excited you’re reacting to it!!

This film is so close to my heart. It has that right amount of horror and wholesomeness to it. Quick fact: Jack actually does know who Sally is. They were just not great with communication. A prime example was when Sally tried to warn Jack in the film. As well as anytime Jack is too busy with the other citizens of Halloween town. It's when they finally get a moment alone together that they connect. Sally was worried about Jack's well being and knew Jack more than his fans and Jack saw it and even acknowledged Sally's talents and even saw her as an equal.

My mom had me watch this movie first when I was around 5 years old, and I've loved it ever since! Glad that you liked it ❤❤

Omg, I had this on for Halloween for my 4 year old son and I was ready to stop the movie at any time, but he loved it. The catchy opening song probably helped a lot. And he loved the Design of the characters 🙈🤣

So, this movie’s directed by Tim Burton. Tim burton is the god of stop motion. Just check out Coraline, Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice, Alice and Wonderland, Miss Periguins home for peculiar children. He’s so clever. But I think it’s a cool little piece of information, that his wife (up until 2014) was Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter. I know Harry Potter wasn’t a Tim Burton movie, but she was in a lot of his movies.

The fact my 4 year old is obsessed with this movie is crazy.

My wedding was themed after Jack and Sally's song "Simply Meant to Be". I proposed to my wife on Halloween while we were dressed as Jack and Sally. This movie and it's deeper messages are what formed quite a lot of who my wife and I are as people. This will always be my favorite movie.

Well there's a running debate on whether this is a christmas movie or a halloween movie. Imo it's not necessarily either. It's a story that happens to involve those 2 holidays. :)

This movie is also a good example of cultural appreciation turning into cultural appropriation. Jack appreciated Christmas so much, even though he did not fully understand it. And then he starts to change it into his image, tinged with Halloween-ness, completely losing what Christmas was really about.

Bro, I know it's going to be a fight in the comments. Is it a Halloween movie? Is it a Christmas movie? It's both. It's appropriate anywhere from October through December. All of the final quarter of the year. It is acceptable to watch this movie any other time of the year. You could watch it, but you might get some funny looks

I do agree, Jack and Sally getting together was always very sudden and didn't make a lot of sense to me. This is another one I grew up watching btw, so lots of people around me praised them as being this big romantic couple or relationship goals, and I just don't see it cause there's not a lot of focus on them lol. Sally is awesome, and she is the only one who had sense like Santa said, and she of course saw Jack at the beginning of the movie and saw his vulnerabilities and all of that, so I have no doubt SHE will be a great partner. But Jack is very self absorbed, even if he is a nice person on the inside. It's good that he was able to learn in the end and correct his actions, so maybe he will continue to be able to do that and will be a good partner too.

OMG MATE listen there s BOOK that continues Sally's story its cannon and its a beautiful read! It goes into Sally backstory theres more to her than we think. ALSO Sandman makes an appreance its rly cool! i highly recommend you check it out its an easy read too not too long and so worth it.

I really loved this movie when it came out and as time has passed, I have enjoyed it more. By the way, you should look for Voiceplay OogieBoogie's song - if you don't know, Voiceplay is an acapella group and they do an amazing job of several songs from this movie - OpgieBoogie's song being the best, in my opinion.
