If you compare Jack from Tim Burton’s poem to Jack in the movie it’s clear how much of himself he added to the character. Jack was supposed to be just a “reverse Grinch”; Danny made him into a character who was driven more by boredom and intellectual curiosity. Look at how he tries to solve Christmas like a math equation and uses scientific equipment to study the artifacts. Danny Elfman wanted to be a scientist when he was a kid before he discovered he had musical talent by the way.

I think it more stems from the fact that Jack concludes, the only way to truly understand Christmas is to _try it_ for himself, and he needs to get the other monsters involved. Jack's intention is that their Christmas be just as jolly and joyful as the original... But the problem is, the Denizens of Halloween Town only ever know how to be scary. To be otherwise goes against their nature; they put their best and most genuine effort forward, but the end result is, they can't _not be scary._ They try to create toys; the toys come to life and attack people. They try to create hats...from old _dead things._ Instead of stockings, they stuff presents into a Live Anaconda...okay, Nature or not, that one was just _stupid._ They try to create a Christmas Wreathe, it comes to life and attacks. Their idea of a gift is a Shrunken Head - etc, etc. And Jack is so blinded by the progress they're making, that he doesn't see the fatal flaws in the plan and where it can go wrong. In a lot of ways, it's because of the same thing; Jack is just as hardwired to be scary as all of them, so having a sort of Halloween-Edge to the Holiday, might _improve_ Christmas in a sense. So in the end; the Denizens of Halloween are trying to replicate something that they can't _possibly_ understand. It would be like trying to employ an industrial license-plate press to make cookies. You might put in the right ingredients, but what you get is plate-shaped cookies covered in grease and oil.

It does give him new ways to scare though.

Yep. I was obsessed with many things and my current obsession is Tim Burton style things and early to mid 2000's goth trends. Last year, it was 80's anything.

I'm on the spectrum as well, and I've been obsessing about things myself and trying to figure things out that I relate my situation to Jack. Probably cause throughout childhood, we’re conditioned to see Halloween related things as scary and bad so we don’t spend that much time trying to get used to it, that’s what happened with me. Luckily, my sister recommended this movie and now I have a deep love for spooky things.

I remember bringing this movie in to school to watch, and there were a couple kids that had to leave the room because they were scared. I went to Catholic school too so the teacher was super concerned for me 😅

@@emmaray6215 So I grew up in New England, and we take Spooktober pretty seriously here. I guess it’s part of our heritage; death and fear are a pretty massive part of life, and it’s probably best to get comfy with those concepts as early as possible. I loved this movie so much, three different relatives bought it for me for Xmas when I was 5. I then went on to reading Edgar Allan Poe at age 8 and Stephen King at 11, so maybe I was just a morbid kid -_-

An old Irish folk tale from the mid-19th Century tells of Stingy Jack. The story says that Jack was getting chased by some villagers from whom he had stolen, when he met Satan, who claimed it was time for him to die. However, the thief stalled his death by tempting Satan with a chance to bedevil the church-going villagers chasing him. Jack told Satan to turn into a coin with which he would pay for the stolen goods (Satan could take on any shape he wanted); later, when the coin (Satan) disappeared, the Christian villagers would fight over who had stolen it. The Devil agreed to this plan. He turned himself into a silver coin and jumped into Jack's wallet, only to find himself next to a cross Jack had also picked up in the village. Jack had closed the wallet tight, and the cross stripped the Devil of his powers; and so he was trapped. Jack lets Satan go only after he agrees to never take his soul. Many years later, the thief died, as all living things do. Of course, Jack's life had been too sinful for him to go to heaven; however, Satan had promised not to take his soul, and so he was barred from hell as well. Jack now had nowhere to go. He asked how he would see where to go, as he had no light, and Satan mockingly tossed him an ember from the flames of Hades, that would never burn out. Jack carved out one of his turnips (which were his favorite food), put the ember inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern", or jack-o'-lantern. ________ And that's how Jack ended up in Halloweentown... I think. Exhausted from endless and pointless wander, our dear thief begged for mercy and Satan gladly -enslaved him- appointed him as Pumpkin King. Jack got a place to call home (dead forest territory somewhere in-between worlds) and a job for whole eternity. Once a year Jack let ghosts, demons and monsters enter the world of livings, to remind of horrors, that awaits us in the afterlife. And he even managed to turn this event into a great holiday that glorify Satan's realm. After a while, of, course it turned out to be a punishment... (because, Jack was technically trapped in Halloweentown, like Davy Jones on "Flying Dutchman")... but hey, at least Jack escaped hell, amirite? 1-0 in favor of the Satan.
