Today's Northern Belle tour came from York to Carlisle and back, north via the West Coast Main Line with steam haulage from Carnforth, then south via the Settle line with steam haulage back to Hellifield.
SR Battle of Britain class 34067 'Tangmere' was the steam loco today.
Seen here at Scout Green approaching Shap Summit, then at Appleby on the return. I was expecting her to stop at Appleby for water, but carried on straight through!

What a pity that such a powerful and capable locomotive well able to haul the train un aided was turned into a mere SMOKE MACHINE by the Diesel working very near its limit at the rear ! You can actually hear the slight "clanking" of the lightly loaded motion

Thankyou. There are lots of saplings planted between the road and railway - so in a year or 2 there will be no view of the railway and people won't come!

Cracking shots Julian, can't imagine they would plant trees there! Maybe they are Gorse bushes.

Thanks Ivan. Whatever they are they will probably obscure the view in a year or 2. I wish I could do long tracking shots like yours but I am not up to long walks/climbs any more!

Thanks Tim - yes - I was caught out a bit expecting her to be 5 mins late - but turned up earlier than i expected. And yes - plenty of people caught out by the train skipping the water stop.

Excellent shots Julian, you got some lovely clag at Scout Green where there’ll be leaves on the line issues in time ☹️ with diesel assistance no top up needed at Appleby apparently still an excellent shot there, cheers 👍

Thanks Nige - I am rather pleased with the lighting / clag at Scout Green. I was surprised at Appleby as the train shot through without stopping for water. So I missed out on the close up static shots I wanted.
