This movie was probably the only truly accurate depiction of ancient Norse and Viking life that I've ever seen on film.

It could’ve been more accurate, but it was definitely better than any other piece of Viking media (aside from Vinland Saga.)

As a Swede with ties to the old Viking families i can say that it is pretty accurate yes but a lot is not accurate. The draugur isn't really a Swedish Viking mythology thing but we had berserkers that were said to be blessed by Odin to live on until the last true warrior king breaths his last.
@kekekeke2200
@kekekeke2200 Год назад
And yes I know draugur are not realistic in general but berserkers were real warriors that were taught to believe they were immortal and in general they were for a long time. Just like with luck, if you're fired upon you'd be lucky to be missed once twice and maybe thrice but the fourth is sure to hit you.

This is a good film but lets not attack people who didn't want to go to the theater to see it. See, it's all about investment and novelty. The movie has to bring something new to the genre and people need to care, about the subject matter, the actors, the director or the IP. One of the above. No one really cared about the Northman. I mean, let's admit it, the Northman is a pretty standard revenge story but just set in the viking era. "You wronged me and now I--a skilled, violent, determined and good looking man--am coming to kill you." That's the plot of John Wick but John Wick created an epic underworld and had (for its era) very unusual and engaging fight sequences with minimal cuts and incredible choreography. What new thing did the Northman have that isn't in any other revenge thriller? Medieval Europe is not as exciting as you think. Since GoT the audience has pretty much gotten used to stories set in that era or based on that era. So sure, the craft was great, but you need more to get people to the cinema. They should just wait for award season and hope for recognition there.

The Northman has historic accuracy beyond any other movie about Vikings. It has single cut scenes. It has brutal fidelity to all aspects of Norse culture. John Wick is just so much made up bs.
@asherujudo7383
@asherujudo7383 2 года назад
@@kfer9249 John Wick was complete fantasy nonsense but it had incredible cultural appeal. Northman has scholastic appeal. A lot of historians were consulted and so they will appreciate the attention to detail. But OP was talking about regular moviegoers. Most people don't care about Vikings. So if you bet 70 million dollars on a movie about them, you better find something in your movie they'll care about or prepare to lose your principle.

this movie was such a bizarre, trippy experience. i love how the dialogue is deliberately poetic. "like a battle-dog returning to its master I've come to be fettered by my queen's fair locks" sounds a hell lot more epic than "honey I'm home", and it kinda speaks to the dysfunction in that marriage too. makes you feel like you're seeing a Norse epic come to life.

What I take away from all the negative reviews, and the fact that this movie didn't do so well financially: The Northman is a movie for history and mythology nerds, but not everyday moviegoers or "normies" (mainstream audiences, in other words). I watched it with my father and he had a hard time following it because he didn't understand Norse mythology.
@marcoslaureano5562
@marcoslaureano5562 2 года назад
It's literally a remake of Conan. I don't know how people didn't like it - but I can tell you why it did badly financially - it was badly marketed. It was marketed as an artsy independent movie which was a mistake. It should have been marketed as a plain ole action movie - this would have had the effect of making people say "it's so much more than an action movie!!" - but since they marketed it as an artsy type of movie, people saw it and said "ahh, this isn't some independent artsy movie, it's just a plain ole action movie". We humans are funny that way and perception is sometimes everything to us and marketing is really the art of manipulating people's perception of whatever it is you're trying to sell.
@adamcupples8082
@adamcupples8082 2 года назад
Another issue could be that it comes from a director well known for his period horror movies, and alot of the marketing made it seem like it was going to be the same as the vvitch or the lighthouse, when it's not a horror but like you said an action film
