The Northman - historically accurate?

Our thoughts about the Northman Movie. We're not reviewing the plot, the script or the actors, since opinions differ and taste is individual. This is about the effort of making the movie historically accurate - which hasn't really been done before.

One of the things I love about the folks at Grimfrost is their attention to historical accuracy in all their products. So, when they endorse a movie (or anything, really) you know it will be good.

@@maxdamagusbroski We have no financial connection to the film. The market for props for the movie is long gone, since it's already in theatres. This isn't even a review of the movie itself. Some will surely find it extremely good, whilst others will consider it one of the worst movies they've seen. Everybody has an opinion about everything today, which is why there's no point in making reviews. Reviews are nothing but subjective opinions worth exactly as much as somebody else's subjective opinion.

Same here, it seems that pretty much every time something like this comes out it ends up being historically inaccurate slander that misrepresents or rewrites our ancestral culture, beliefs, traditions, history etc. After playing the assassin's Creed Valhalla with their majority back Vikings and everyone being gay or bisexual, as well as having them yelling about how they are going to rape those they were raiding as if this was a normal and acceptable behavior within Norse society. And then seeing previews of an old black woman playing Jarl Hakon in the show ....I was done.This sort of shit is inexcusable and should be called out for what it is by those of us who care about the truth.

I was expecting a lot after watching the trailer and I wasn't disappointed. I love viking history though I wouldn't call myself an expert by any means. But everything just seemed right about this film and how they filmed the imagery of the viking beliefs was brilliant. The one question I do have is that I thought the vikings where quite 'nice' with their slaves in comparison with other cultures? The soundtrack was awesome
@Dovah21
@Dovah21 Год назад
To address your concern about how they treated their slaves: It would really depend on their owner. The Old Norse were known for being kind of class-ist, and wouldn't really go out of their way to be kind to their thralls because of that. This is not to say that they would be purposefully cruel though, as that would breed resentment and make it all the more likely the thrall would snap and make an attempt on their owner's life. Thralls were viewed as property in a way similar to how a farmer would view a draft horse: they would do what's necessary to make sure they were fed well enough and kept safe, so they could produce work reliably. I'm sure there were some slave owners more disposed to kindness than others, but to my knowledge there's aren't a whole lot of direct accounts on slave owning practices from that period of history, so there's space for speculation but not much else.

Could the file marks on their teeth be the result of using their teeth as a tool? The Inuit people traditionally used their teeth for various tasks, so perhaps our Viking ancestors did as well. I have concerns about the effect that this movie will have on the modern recreation of the living religion. The examples in this movie, historical or otherwise were not the norm for the daily life of the Norsemen or how they honored the gods. Unfortunately many new to the path will look at this as some sort of historical recreation and attempt to parody it in ceremony. I think it will set the modern practice of the religion back, along with the optics from the outside, once again stunting our legitimacy, just as the Vikings series did. Now we will have to suffer through a literal circus sideshow (like shield biting, grunting, howling and vulgar displays) at any public rituals we attend. It becomes less about honoring the gods and more about playing berserker for people who didn't have the discipline to become real warriors in this life. It is unfortunate for those of us that contribute to the understanding of the religious practice from a modern perspective. Your review is spot on IMHO, so don't take my remarks as criticism of you or the movie, I enjoyed it for the most part. Just concern for the future of Asatru at the hands of those who cannot separate the fantasy from the living modern religious practice. I wonder what Sveinbjorn would have thought of this.
@criticviking
@criticviking 2 года назад
You should know that the top advisor of this movie have pretty much spent his most of his career on researching the scandinavians religion back then. gone through archelogical finds and all the sagas about it. Im pretty sure the portrayal of the religion is as good as it possible can be by the knowledge of what we have of early medieval scandinavians. If only we had a time machine too see whose more right. Some modern aesir or a Upsalla professor.
@northwoodskindred
@northwoodskindred 2 года назад
@@criticviking I am well aware of the research that went into this, I do not dispute its accuracy just not happy about the effect in modern times for the ones that can't separate art from life. Everything in society and all modern religions has evolved to meet some modern standard, and if we practiced this way we would have a bunch of weirdos pissing in each other's mouth and howling at the moon, calling themselves shape shifters. We have to evolve as a religion to meet the modern standards of conduct and social norms. I dont have the answer, life imitates art and art should should always remain a free expression. It just makes it harder to help people find their way in such a muddy landscape. And I have have been studying and practicing this religion as long as many of the professionals have been studying the archeology. My criticism is not out of ignorance, only a concern from a different perspective. 20 years USMC, I have raided foreign shores in combat and might have a different perspective than a professor who has never called out to Odin for what could be the last time, under enemy fire. There is a connection in that you can't translate from an old text, or fully understand while driking a latte in the library.

The "Vikings" ie. Pirates, made up a fairly small percentage of Scandinavian people. Most were peaceful craftsmen, tradesmen, fishermen or small scale farmers. The Vikings were merciless, greedy butchers for the most part. They were like modern day maximum security convicts but worse. Like all lawless adventurers, society has romanticized them in film and literature.

It is a general concensus today to call late Iron Age Scandinavians for Vikings. This is evident everywhere, even with world leading scholars and archaeolgists. It is a simple term that describes them with greater ease than "Late Iron Age Scandinavians partaking in expeditions abroad to raid". Languages and definitions develop and change with time. That is ok. The alternative word would be "Norse", which is a 16th Century Dutch word. The word Viking is better suited, since it is used as a noun to describe "Viking People" already in the 9th Century, as seen in the poem Widsith (lines 45-59): - Hroþwulf ond Hroðgar heoldon lengest sibbe ætsomne suhtorfædran, siþþan hy forwræcon wicinga cynn - (translation: Hroðulf and Hroðgar held the longest peace together, uncle and nephew, since they repulsed the Viking-kin)

@@Grimfrost I think the saddest part about history, is that the winners or those who end up having the skills are right and have their writings future red, or the ones who dictate how somebody was or is in the future. More is known as time goes on as you said. But it really tinges me the wrong way when not calling all so-called vikings, as it is known vaguely in a lot of people's minds as nothing but murderous Killers with no remorse and all they did was kill people and steal. You know, the main line of rape and pillage and that was all they were good for. I understand definitely not to romanticize a group of people. But to say that it is and always will be that Vikings themselves were nothing but murderers horrible people who did nothing, that's where I start to draw the line. There's a vast gray area in between and a lot of people who choose not to end of into the actual historical documentation or artifacts refuse to understand that. I love your channel! You guys seriously do so much for historical accuracies of the region and I love that. I question the accuracy of a few things in the trailer. I'm sure they did research and I'm not claiming to be an expert... however. Him running around without a shirt, dual wielding, the vitki or whatever he is suppose to be having the Ægishjálmur on his forehead. A lot can be said about him. I mean they do mention the helm of awe (or terror depending on translation) in Völsunga saga in the 13th century and that it should be on the brow makes sense too. However the actually image as far as I know only appear in the 1600s. In both cases its after the Viking era. Then the turtle shell broaches. Perhaps they are suggesting he practices Seiðr as you mentioned and he is cross dressing but I've got mixed feelings about this. On a whole I'm not sure how I feel about the trailer but will probably watch it regardless.

The movie goes for very basic interpretations ove everything despite the odd attempts at symbolism. They just run with the stories about shirtless feral berserkers and like many apply information about the kievan rus to the Scandinavians. The clothing , weapons and buildings are all well done but I wasn't impressed by the other depictions. It seeme like a better rendered version of modern era independent viking films.

I bought this movie on Blu-ray after watching it all alone in the theater. It’s dark and brutal and so so so amazing. Hail the Æsír!

Is the scene where the son and king act like dogs in a ritual, realistic?

Probably, there is hints pointing toward it spread throughout the litterature and archaeology

How about a Dane making himself a slave just to kill his uncle? I don't find this in history. A Viking would have raised an army and built boats and then went after his uncle.

How about glima? How can you have a great viking movie without the thing that made the Vikings so great; their martial art?

I just want to comment on another video here. One that i did not see.. Why did i not see it? Because the comments was turned of. I think there is a lot of people like me that do not care to even start to see a video where we can not give a comment. I just wanted to say this in hope that you will not turn of the comments on videos without thinking twice in the future. I think most people are being tired of the cancel culture we see growing so fast this day.

Nice to have the view of non-Scandinavians make a move about past Norsemen just asking who butters your bread
