** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Today's puzzle is called Atom and it's by the astonishing constructor TotallyNormalCat. Whereas TNC's sudokus are often brutally difficult, this one is rated just 2/5 on Logic Masters Germany... could you solve it? Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply (ie place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column & 3x3 box). Digits on a grey line must be between the digits in the circles at either end of the line.

As a physicist, I have to applaud TNC for his ever impressive wit. And not just for a pretty pattern similar to atom, but for how electron circles on the orbit seem to somewhat obey Pauli exclusion principle. Absolutely fascinating!

I'm going to say it looks like an ion of fluorine which has borrowed it's eighth outer electron from another atom (probably hydrogen - making hydrofluoric acid). Atoms desire to have completed electron shells. Neon is the next element, and already has a complete outer shell, but if it was neon then there would be 8 lines emanating from the nucleus.
@salionshatterstar
@salionshatterstar 2 года назад
It could alternatively be chlorine, right? I think that also has 7 out of 8 electrons in its outer shell.
@Hitchhiker_a.d.R.
@Hitchhiker_a.d.R. 2 года назад
@@salionshatterstar Yup. If you only consider the outer shell it could be any halide ion (additionally iodine and bromine (and technically also radioactive astatine and artificially made tennessine))

TotallyNormalCat missed a chance to clarify the element in question. If the whole puzzle were low/high swapped, all the logic would work the same, but the atom would definitely be fluorine due to having a 9 on the nucleus.

At 22:24 "...this can't be 6 now" (referring to r5c2): actually it couldn't have been 6 since around 10:30, when r6c2 was marked 56 (r5c2 had to be lower than r6c2, which was sitting on an in-between line with the other end at r7c3 having a 9).

13:21 - "is there some really obvious trick here we can do?" Well, you can remove 6 as an option from R5C2, since it has to be lower than a 56. If you put into R4C2 the values that would be forced for each of the options you have in R3C3, you'd get a 456 triple in box 4/C2. This takes the options in R5C3 down to 23, and R5C4 down to 234. There can only be one digit from 2345 on the eastern arm, so it must have at least a 6 on it, so R5C8=789. Very nice from TNC, whose puzzles I usually approach with trepidation.

Proof once again of both TNC and Simon's genius. I'm learning that as much as I see Simon miss at the time he marks something, I am missing much more. I was stumped because I couldn't wrap my head around the cardinal ("diameter") spokes forcing there to be a middling and high digit on them. And then the ending took me a moment because I had so many pencil marks I couldn't see the "Naked singles" as clearly. I wonder if I should have just deleted all my marks once I got the atom done and started again with the sudoku finish... So 94 minute solve with the logic help of Simon explaining the cardinal implications.

I was going to write an essay on why, though it may be helpful to imagine the structure of an atom as analogous to a planetary system, it is not really accurate to describe the electron as "orbiting" the nucleus of its atom, and that they are notional "particles" of negatively charged energy which have no position unless measured, that occupy fields of potential blah blah blah Schrödinger blah ... but RU-vid comments is hardly the place for quantum mechanics, or my amateurish grasp of the subject. 11:34 - Simon deduces that a 6 in r5c2 is impossible, but happily keeps it in 😄
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 2 года назад
Because he doesn't see it's always impossible. He only sees it's impossible in the case that there's a 5 in r4c2, i.e. for a specific, non-general reason. (56 pair eliminating both from r6c2). The reason it is actually impossible (that r6c2 would have no fill because of between line rules) isn't something Simon notices for another 10 minutes.

@SjorsHoukes 2 года назад
@@RichSmith77 If you look at his pencil mark in r6c2, it's clear that a 6 in r5c2 is always impossible. Simon does notice this, but fails to draw the conclusion that the circle can only have 4 or 5.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 2 года назад
@@SjorsHoukes I totally agree it's clear a 6 is impossible. You, I and most of his audience noticed. I don't believe Simon noticed though, otherwise he would have removed the 6 pencilmark. All Simon was interested in though, at this time, was that a 5 and a 6 in r r45c2 made r6c2 impossible. He's not aware of the reason why 6 is always impossible. He should see it, but for some reason even he probably couldn't explain, he hasn't noticed.

Damn, this one was 100% doable for me but my brain just could _not_ work with that in-betweensies rule to save my life. Kept confusing what was restricting what ಠ_ಠ

Anyone else's brain struggling too much to differentiate thermometer rules from in-between rules? I just can't seem to separate the two.

2 hours in and I broke the puzzle somehow, got locked up on 7s... not sure where I went wrong so I suppose I lost that one. not spending another 3 hours trying to work out where It all went wrong

Ahh, completed it in 38 minutes. Having solved it I figured that Simon would be relatively* slow on this one because of his unhealthy aversion towards pencilmarking which was very powerful in this puzzle. *Not relative to my solve as Simon is by far the better solver but relative to the difficulty of the puzzle.

@Cracking The Cryptic: The Solution is wrong, isnt it? The circle in Box 3 has a 5 in it, which is smaller than the 6 on the line
