Fun fact: The Garbage Puyo going off screen instead of condensing into even greater Puyos is due to the fact that Sonic Mania uses the original Puyo Puyo 1 ruleset. Within that ruleset, red is the highest the game's willing to show. The actual bug is that the game's programming was allowed to show that much red Puyo; the orignal game only showed a certain amount maximun, even though the true amount was still quite high.
To me, it's a shame they didn't use the SFX from Mean Bean Machine...I remember beating Eggman in hard mode in Mean Bean Machine as a kid...multiple times. If Eggman had his AI from that game for this boss, that would've been a *very* nice easter egg as well. It could be the nostalgia talking, but it just doesn't feel the same...
That was so toxic in such a funny way, and that's why I love Puyo Puyo, because after you get really good, and then revisit this game that has a puyo puyo boss fight, the fight was already over before it began because on how easy and pathetic this boss is.
I was about to type that he missed an opportunity to get a triple because if he connected that blue piece at 0:45 with those three blue beans, he would have gotten a triple. But in the end, I was amazed.
That's really humiliating, especially since Sonic has been known to rush into trouble without thinking, is a cocky little rat, and he can't swim, but some how won, and that's how he got into Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.

Well yeah no shit dude. He's not supposed to be a challenge, this isn't a puyo puyo game, its a friggin sonic game, 3 year old are supposed to be able to beat him so yeah of course there's no challenge
Huh, I never realized that despite all this is still Puyo Puyo. And for that reason insane chains can be made. I only did 2-chains in that...it just never crossed my mind that you can play regular Puyo like this
Hmm... a thought occurs. What if you tried this in the Player vs Player mode of this game and got this chain as player 2? Would the nuisances stretch across the screen and into your area, I wonder?
Yeah, seeing that this is more of a reference to mean bean rather than puyo puyo series, it uses puyo 1 rules. That means no offset, no all clears, and only one next puyo pair displayed, as well as the damage counter is topped at boulder. But the garbage counter goes off screen means that it's an oversight, or maybe the devs didn't expect that many chain.
