If Toshiro Mifune actually portrayed Kenobi, then the movies would have stopped in the 'Phantom Menace'. The Sith would have been undone by his sheer coolness.

I had no idea Lucas wanted to cast Mifune. I love both Alec & Ewan as Kenobi but seeing Mifune would've been amazing. ALSO that mash-up with Mifune in the Star Wars scenes was badass!

Alec Guiness was great but never understood the fascination with Star Wars whereas Mifune would have understood Obi Wan Kenobi role perfectly

Holy Crap! Mifune as Kenobi?? That would have been EPIC Casting!

Always loved Alec Guiness in the role, he embodied class, intelligence, experience and wisdom. Having said that, Mifune would have been even better. He would have conveyed all of these things in addition to his swordfighting-abilities. Also makes me wonder which actor would have been chosen to play the role in the Prequels then? Of Japanese Actors born during the 70s, who comes closest to Mifune in terms of both looks and charisma?

Probably Hiroyuki Sanada he’s a well known enough Japanese actor Hell he’s done Hollywood movies and TV Last Samurai, that really insulting Hollywood version of the 47 ronin (Japanese people felt really insulted by that film) and Westworld

I'd heard this years ago, but thought it was just a rumor. But Mifune as Kenobi, the thought is awesome. He could only have made it better.

Toshiro's English was fine. Hated how they never let his real voice in english be heard. Mifune would have been awesome. Must everyone play the race card?

Toshiro Mifune plainly refused the role , he thought it would have cheapened the Samouraï Ethics and code to appear in a Sci Fi movie.

FUN FACT: Not only Mifune declined the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, he also declined for the role of Tiger Tanaka in the James Bond movie because of the film Grand Prix, and also Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid due to his low English skills

I went through a period several yrs ago when I binged pretty much all of Kurosawa’s great movies…which include Mifune in most of them. It is nothing short of sad that relatively few in the West have no idea who Mifune is…nor that he was the original archetype for so many of the Western “heroes” that play off the stoic loner personality. As an aside, Rashomon may be the greatest movie of all time imo…it will change the perspective on life for those who watch it carefully…

If Mifune played the role, I imagine either Takuya Kimura or Hideaki Itō would play the role of a younger Kenobi. I would've mentioned Hiroyuki Sanada, but I think he would've been considered 10 years too old for the role of Kenobi for Phantom Menace.

Toshiro Mifune was kind of right, special effects at the time were kind of crap, Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic revolutionized everything. Toshiro was probably afraid the movie would ended up looking like a tokusatsu tv series.

It’s a shame that they wasted an opportunity to have greatness in their film history.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but he simply didn’t want to. He thought that doing such a film would be reductive towards the original culture. After all, his generation often were the children of the last generation of samurai/bushi. The remnants of it was still ingrained in family culture in those days…it was lived, not simply portrayed on film. The legacy of which isn’t always easy to process for people even now (primogeniture family culture, etc), particularly in post-war Japanese society. Why would he give his voice to Hollywood for a secondary representation and an untested science fiction franchise, when Japan had its own film industry and could represent it at its source? Samurai were not fictional characters after all, and during the war, a lot of historical sites, artifacts, and castles were destroyed. Even before that by Japanese themselves, through local uprisings. Not surprising to be protective of that, and not to be made into just another “ethnic” trope.
@ahmedshaharyarejaz9886
@ahmedshaharyarejaz9886 2 месяца назад
Probably for the Best. Mifune would have been seen as too ethnic by most western audiences of that time. It could have cut the movie's appeal and popularity.

Interesting history. Now I am willing to bet the Mace Windu character was modelled off Mifune and his seriousness. Or in another parallel universe Obi Wan would have behaved more like Mace Windu in A New Hope.

Seeing as they would have had to cast another Japanese actor as young Obi Wan in the Prequels, my vote would have been for Ken Watanabe

Just what has me confused is why not just have him speak Japanese? We had aliens who spoke made up languages but white audiences couldn't handle a Japanese man speaking Japanese? I mean most of the characters in Star Wars A New Hope are multi lingual. Han Solo speaks at least 4 languages (Basic, Wookie, Whatever Greedo speaks, and Huttese). You mean to tell me not one person could've understood Japanese?

If Mifune was in Star Wars Vader would survive less than 5 seconds of screen time. And I think that it's best he didn't go, because nowadays his theoritical Kenobi (or more accurately, Hiroyuki Sanada's Kenobi, as maybe Sanada would have played Obi Wan's episodes 1, 2 and 3 young version, as well in the "Kenobi" series) would be ruined by Disney. By the way I imagine him fighting with bescaar katana and not a lightsaber.

This is an very interesting reveal and if Mifune were to play the character supposedly it would indeed create a less racist and less depressing pop culture.

If he plays Obi-Wan, English might be the biggest problem. Alec Guinness is also one of my favorite actors. But he's not known for any kind of action film. He's well known in the UK, but Mifune was a more international star. My conclusion is that even though Mifune was an icon of samurai cinema, but the Star War series is basically a western-style creation, Mifune may not be suitable for this role. However, Alec Guinness gives audiences a gentle old master persona, which is good for the trilogy. The young Obi-Wan is the best character in the new star wars, but the new series can not be compared to the original trilogy.
