A couple of months ago I set out to make a definitive, objective list of the greatest filmmakers of all time. It took a long, long time. Through many different attempts I eventually came up with a somewhat extensive formula on how to rank and rate directors.
Merch: shop.spreadshirt.com/simonsrants
Patreon: / simonsrants
Formula:
Average all IMDb ratings of Feature Films (excluding shorts, live and/or stage performances, television episodes/series/mini-series, documentaries, and “no budget” films). Multiply by 10 and average against MetaCritic ratings (or average Rotten Tomatoes critic score if necessary) to find an average score on the scale of 100.
Bonus Points:
Every 80+ = Add 0.25
Every 90+ = Add 0.50
Every 95+ = Add 1.00
Every 100 = Add 2.00
Percentage Based Points:
Percentage of Films Rated 80% or higher, divided by 10 (50% = +5.0)
*If Director is still active, count as half points (50% = +2.5)
**If Directors have less than 10 films, deduct 1 point per film under limit.
***Do not count films from 2021, they're too recent to have an accurate rating
****If director worked in both silent and sound eras but was known primarily for one era, discount other era.
Other Directors I looked up and rated but didn't make my list. Let me know in the comments if I missed anyone:
Ida Lupino 65.5**
Mira Nair 65.4*
William Friedkin 65.2

That was such a fun exercise, thank you for your work. I'll check some of the directors I haven't heard of or didn't really watch their movies, so that's helpful, thank you once again. My favorite director is probably Andrei Tarkovsky, so I was pleasantly surprised to see him so highly on the list, because who cares about a Russian arthouse filmmaker who lived a couple of decades ago. What's amazing about him is that he never made a bad film. Like even his worst film, which is I think probably the first one he has made, Ivan's Childhood, is still ok. His movies are some of the most spiritual experiences I have ever had, he developed his own, unique style, and sticked to it throught all of his career, which is amazing, also because it's not being replicated as much as with other directors. Most directors have their own favorite techniques and preferences about how they direct films, but Tarkovsky goes all out. My man. But I'm not happy that Andrei Rublev and Mirror are so low on the list, as they are definitely his best movies, especially Mirror I think is his magnum opus, I find it ridiculous that Solaris is so high on this list, I 100%, not respectfully disagree. I'm also happy to see some love for Fellini from your side, because he is absolutely fantastic. He has made a couple of absolute masterpieces and a couple of really great movies, definitely one of the greatest directors ever, I love that guy. I was a little bit sad to see David Lynch so "low" on the list, I kept my fingers crossed for him to be in the top 30, because my man has made Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet, which are one of the greatest films I have ever seen, but I also get that he's weird, controversial and polarizing, and he also has made some not that great films as well, so on the one hand I get it and understand why he's 47, it's still a very high place for a such a controversial director, but on the other hand there are so many other directors higher on this list than he is that could only wish to make a film like Mulholland Drive that I'm again getting sad. I actually think that Stanley Kubrick is a little bit overrated. I don't say he's bad or mediocre, he's definitely one of the greatest, but I find so many other directors to have much better films than he does. The problem with Kubrick that I have is that in my opinion, he has made only one film that is an absolute masterpiece and contains everything when "Kubrick's style" works, and that's 2001: A Space Odyssey. This is a top 5 greatest films ever, the best you can get. The rest of his films are simply not on an enough level for me. Barry Lyndon is a really good movie, but there are soooo many greater movies, like I could name a lot. The same goes with The Shining, which I think is just a good movie. Dr Strangelove is really funny and good, but again, not enough to be one of the greatest films ever. I could go on like that and repeat myself about all of his movies. So we have a director who has made one top 5 movie ever, a couple of good or really good ones, and the rest is mediocre or even a little bit bad. Now compare this filmography with Scorsese's, Welles's, Hitchcock's, Tarkovsky's, Bergman's and so on. These guys have made so many masterpieces and one of the greatest films ever. So why Kubrick? Is Barry Lyndon really one of the greatest films ever? Is The Shining really that great? Or other of his films? Is 2001: A Space Odyssey enough for him to be in every top 3 directors ever list? My answer, as off right now, is no.

Thanks for the comment! I agree mostly with your point on Kubrick, although to me I’d switch out 2001 with Dr Strangelove. For me, he’s a top 20-25 director so I agree, I think he’s overrated personally. Glad you were able to enjoy the list despite disagreeing in a couple areas!

@@SimonsRants Well, obviously I would disagree, no two lists are the same, especially when one of the lists is not even made by a human ;) It’s normal. It’s not a reason not to enjoy it, especially when there are literally more than 100 directors on the list and you can learn quite a bit as well as to get to know your thought process when making this list, very interesting, as well as your general comments as well. And what are your thoughts about other points than Kubrick? If you’d have a time and like to write it, I’d listen ;)

I completely agree with Lynch; it’s actually very similar to how I felt about Michel Gondry. Where I wish they were higher but I understand why they’re not. They make absolutely crazy movies that people either love or hate so they end up being ranked not nearly as high as the people that love them would rank them. But maybe higher than some would say they should be. As far as Tarkovsky goes, I’m unfortunately woefully ignorant. I have only seen one of his films so far so it’s hard to get an accurate read on him. But I have to say, I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far so I’m very excited to see more by him. I did not grow up watching foreign films so I’ve spent the past three or so years catching up on the greats like Bergman, Resnais, Fritz Lang, Sjöström and so on. I’ve really enjoyed myself but I’m still fairly naive to a bulk of their work. I also agree on Fellini, once again still fairly naive to his work but what I’ve seen I’ve adored. I started with 8 1/2 and was obsessed from the first scene.

@@SimonsRants I only have seen from him Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and I think I can honestly, without an exaggeration say it, that this movie is a masterpiece. It's really great, one of the the best of the XXI century. By the way, imagine spending most of your life in comedy movies, only for your best movie to be this one ;) Really sad in a sense. I actually see in a corner of my eye that you ranked all of Jim Carrey movies, so I'll check it out. I'm not familiar with other Gondry's work so I quickly checked it out on Rotten Tomatoes (again, the power of having more than 100 directors in one place, you really learn a loooot), and it's thought that his other movies than Eternal Sunshine and Microbe and Gasoline are either pretty mediocre or even rotten, it's like between 75% - 40%, so as of right now I don't expect to see another masterpiece or just a great film from him, but who knows, maybe they just don't know what they're talking about, I'll check it out by myself. So I cannot say if he's on the right spot or not, but with David Lynch it is a different story, this is a real frustration ;) Objectively speaking, I really do think that Mulholland Drive is probably like one of the greatest 20 or 30 movies of all time. And the only reason why it's not higher is because there are other older movies which have a much higher participation with their historical legacy and development of the medium. It's really insane, if you think about it, a movie from a XXI century in the top 30 without any biases and personal preferences, I really try to be objective as I can, even though I obviously adore this film as well, I'm completely obsessed. So with that in mind, when I see Spielberg on the 22. position, if my memory serves me correctly, and I hear you imitating your audience "hold on I thought that Spielberg is a top 10 director" my reaction is like "bruh" ;) Obviously he's on the the greatest of all time and I understand people who are inspired by his films, but if you really look closely, I really don't think that he deserves any higher place. I think that Jaws is his best film and it's a masterpiece in my mind, but again, as I mentioned, he could only wish to make a film such as Mulholland Drive, Jaws and this is not even close, not the same league. The same thing with Tarantino, it's like he made Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs is also really fun and the rest of his films are generally very good, but not great, some are even not that good. Obviously with such a solid work, generally speaking, and Pulp Fiction he is one of the greatest directors ever, but I'm not mad that he's only I believe 12. and not in the top 10, I'm mad because there are other greater directors and more important than him earlier on the list and he's simply too high ;) Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Pulp Fiction, but honestly it's not in the same league as Mulholland Drive to me. I don't care that Lynch has made Dune (sort off), I don't care about Lost Highway, which is also not particularly good. Every great director has made a mediocre film or films, so it's not like a huge punch that disqualifies Lynch. And also don't forget about Blue Velvet and other good or great films that he has made, like Eraserhead, it's fantastic. But I'll have to somehow live with that ;) And watch more foreign films of old masters, you really do miss a lot ;) Especially that you said that you enjoyed yourself. Hell yeah ;) And yesss, absolutely, the beginning of 8 1/2 is one of the greatest openings ever. As well as the movie itself. It's absolutely magical and Fellini is at his best, his craft is fabulous. I'm also obsessed with this film ;) I watched it unhealthy number of times. Hmmm, now that I'm thinking about it, actually Lost Highway isn't even that mediocre, actually it's pretty good in my opinion. I'm probably just disappointed that this is a worse version of Mulholland Drive and that's why I don't really care about it. So I'll replace Lost Highway with Wild at Heart. This movie is really weird.

I've thought about this movie list for years too and musical bands. The easiest way is to hold directors accountable to their 10 best movies.

No Antonioni, Howard Hawks or Luis Bunuel? They're in my top 5. Glad that Kieslowski and Buster Keaton are so high! They are also in my top 5.

Did you not put William Wyler through your process? I think he is the most underrated director of all time. 12 best picture nominations and 3 wins and he is rarely on anyone’s list. I’m convinced that he would be top 20 “objectively”.

Definitely would have made the list lol I spent a lot more time and effort on the best directors side than worst directors.
