This is my picks for my top 10 favorite directors as of this moment. These are NOT the 10 BEST directors. Favorites lists are inherently kind of weird, random and subjective.
There's plenty of iconic directors BETTER than much of this list. But these are the directors who made the most movies that have meant the most to me, that inspired me, that shaped me or that I'm always curious what they'll do next. Some are obvious picks based on what I frequently talk about. Some might not be as obvious at first glance but make sense if you dig a bit deeper.

Lucas is a fantastic “visionary” and world builder but outside of A New Hope he’s an abysmal director (American Graffiti is passable but nothing too special, the Prequels are almost as badly directed as they are written)

Aaron Cutter as far as direction goes absolutely not lol. Attack of the clones is one of the most poorly shot and acted blockbusters ever made and has an absurd amount of dated special effects. Don’t really like the sequels either but at least last Jedi is pleasant to look at (and the other 2 are passably directed)

Robert Alexe I agree it’s the best of the trilogy but I don’t think there’s that big of a difference in terms of quality. Biggest compliment I can give the movie is that something of consequence actually happens and that *some* of the special effects have aged relatively well (also Ian mcdiarmid is pretty good). It’s still incredibly poorly written - palpatine’s plan makes zero sense whatsoever and the dialogue is only mildly better than the first two. As far as direction goes it’s definitely more competently made than the first two but like I said there’s only so much you can do with a shit screenplay. Feel like pretty much everyone who says it’s great (including me up until the last year or so) just has shitloads of nostalgia for it/thinks it’s better because it’s darker because if you watch it on its own merits it’s not a very good movie.

The Safdie Brothers are such good directors that they’re both the next Martin Scorseses! Jordan Peele is also pretty good and even though him and Greta Gerwig have only directed two movies, both their directorial debuts are kinda masterpieces. Great list of directors, man

Sorry man, but the three Bergman movies I've seen (The seventh seal, The day's end, Persona) are boring pieces of shit in my opinion. And I'm not a nerd who only likes new blockbusters, I'm a fan of Hitchcock, Leone and Kurosawa.

Ákos Leó Szilágyi That’s completely fine! His movies are certainly not for everyone. I personally love everything the guy does but whether you like his films or not, there is no denying that he’s had a massive influence on cinema. For example a lot of people seem to be claiming The Lighthouse to be one of the most original films which is not true as it has very clear similarities with Bergman’s films such as Persona and Hour of the Wolf.

Man I forgot Denis on my list but he absolutely should be on it! I did put Greta Gerwig though so it’s cool to see someone else who agrees! I think her, Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach are like a niche of their own, I love them all in their own way. Lady Bird is a film that I liked but didn’t love, but after a rewatch and then several more, I absolutely LOVE it, means so much to me now, and I loved Little Women the very first time haha.

Out of curiosity which Ron Howard films have you seen? I’m of the opinion that he’s one of the biggest hacks in the industry right now - Solo is one of the most embarrassingly poorly directed blockbusters of the past decade or so

@@jaievans6655 I have seen the Apollo 13, Solo (I didn't care about it too much), Da Vinci -code, Beautiful Mind and Angels and Demons (I didn't like that so much). But his work in Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13 and Da Vinci -code are really amazing experiences and Apollo and Da Vinci are probably in my top 50 movies of all time

Steven Spielberg is my all-time favorite director! I’d heard of him and read a biography of him in elementary school and that’s when I learned a lot about how much goes on behind the scenes of a movie. I also have a lot of respect for the movies he made/ makes and I can relate to how much he loves and respects movies! Furthermore, I can respect the hard work that goes into making a movie, especially with the hardships that went into the making of Jaws.

I love Steven Spielberg as a director. He made Jaws, Raiders, Last Crusade, and Jurassic Park which are all movies I enjoy. He really knew how to make good movies back then.

I'm 19 years old, and I'm interested in watching Solaris and Stalker, but they look very difficult movies to watch. Should I wait with them?

Ákos Leó Szilágyi I’m 13 years old so my opinion might not be entirely valid lol. both Solaris and Stalker are incredibly slow paced films with long meandering moments where nothing really happens, but they are both phenomenal films with incredibly immersive atmospheres which helps with watching them because you get so sucked into the film it makes you not notice the length. They are very complex multi layered films as well. I say if you really love film and want to expand your cinematic vocabulary as soon as possible watch all of Tarkovsky’s films, but if you’re just looking for easy entertainment they are not that. I would also say Stalker is the better film out of the two and also easier to watch. If you enjoy Stalker then you should watch Solaris. I’d also like to say that The Mirror and Andrei Rublev are his best works, so check those out as well.

j.A.A.x Very well Said! I completely agree with everything you said though I claim Stalker to he his absolute best film. But it’s also a good film to start with to know what you’re getting into. Cool that you are 13 and like Tarkovsky, I mean when I was at that age I just liked blockbusters and stuff.

I was also WAY too surprised with John Woo in your list. I've only seen MI2 tbh and that is... questionable, I guess you could say hahah. Definitely gotta check out the rest of his movies! As much as I love Taika, Carpenter, Tarantino, Gunn, Lord & Miller, Hughes, and del Toro, Spielberg is truly the master filmmaker. He invented the blickbuster, the PG-13 rating, is the highest grossing director ever, has literally made most people's childhood(s), and balances mass audience appeal & auteur filmmaking. And he produces just as many amazing movies than he's directed.

The Russo Brothers! My favorite directors. Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame. Infinity War and Endgame are my favorite movies of all time. Also David Yates for the Harry Potter movies. Brad Bird for the Mission Impossible movie he did and the 3 GOD tier Pixar films. Christopher Nolan for inception and the Dark Knight trilogy.
