I remember as a kid watching the reruns on WPIX 11 NY. I was glad they made this movie for one last run together. It was very public knowledge of Klugman's throat cancer and at 28:09 it was a defining scene and Jack Klugman's finest performance. R.I.P. Tony and Jack.
11 Alive ! Remember in the afternoon they had a short program with kids calling in to play an Atari game on the air, the player would say “PIX” to activate the firing mechanism,I think it was Space Invaders.
@@joeydepalmer4457 Yup. Part of the PIX late night block for decades. It was the Odd Couple at 11, Honeymooners at 11.30, Star Trek at midnight, then two episodes of twilight zone at 1. That was the line up from my elementary school days, right into my twenties. Then Cheers and other modern sitcoms came in.
Reunion TV-movies usually suck bad, but this one was actually pretty hilarious, and of course Jack and Tony are absolutely perfect, didn't miss a beat.
This film brings back such grand memories of New York City !!! Despite the fact I was much younger then & haven't ben there for years now. Penny Marshall's portrayal of Ms. Manners to the guy accusing her about his having a vasectomy. She was absolutely histeracal !!!!! Please keep posting these oldies & goodies!!!!
Wow I'm just at the scene where he discovers they were letting him win and knowing that it was a very real thing for him in his real life made that an emotional moment, almost shed a tear. What an awesome guy, both the character and the real man.
This the first time I’ve watched this tv movie. It was great. Tony Randall and Jack Klugman picked up right where they left off with the television series. They stayed true to their characters. Even Penny Marshall’s cameo was spot on. This was a fine reminder how great these performers were.
Dave Manning I don't pay no mind.if I was an abuse victim writing a police application, all your nerves are shocked, I don't had time to be romper room
I didn't care for that. Didn't make sense at all as well as the tv show apartment set was and still is iconic and better than the one used in the movie. It took me out of the movie a little bit tbh.
This was my very very favorite tv show. I can't believe i didnt know this show was made till today. I watched the movie all the time when i cleaned. I knew it by heart. I had 4 kids and they were always teasing me cause i was a neat freak. The movie would always be playing while i worked. I wore the first tape out and got another. The kids even knew it by heart. They would always tease me. It brings back good memories of my kids. We always had fun.
I HAD NO IDEA THIS EVEN EXISTED! I watched the reruns as a kid and sometimes I look up episodes on here and some how never came across this. This is better than Odd Couple 2.
OMG...Those two are HILARIOUS! 20 minutes in and I haven't stopped laughing. Felix Unger had SERIOUS OCD and Oscar Madison was hygienically challenged but those dudes had each others' BACK! I remember them younger but seeing them older was even funnier.
I love that mellow jazz music on the back ground, you can catch a soft balanced groove when a character running the race or a trail of kids riding a canoe or a grandfather flying his plane it's very sentimental how every walk of life wants a friend to hold on to to break those depressed measure. life is too sweet let's live for today.
I loved this show show when it was on the air.. I loved them both. Great to see them back together for this film.. Love Penny Marshall as well.. shame they are all gone now.. sniff
Those two gentlemen were made to play opposite one another... there were other oscars and other felix's but none compared to the talent they had together
This series is one of the rare times where a reboot\adaptation worked gangbusters and surpassed the original. It's in that rare company with MASH and In The Heat of The Night.
This was a sweet and funny reunion movie...Randall and Klugman are better than ever in their respective roles of finicky, uptight Felix and sloppy, sarcastic Oscar...It was like the two of them never parted ways 18 years earlier and are still driving each other crazy...Everyone was good in it and was especially fun seeing Garry Walberg back as Speed and Penny Marshall as Myrna...Thanks for the wonderful upload, Chris...I really enjoyed it......
So touching that the plot of this was based on the real life relationship of Randal and Klugman. Jack said Tony was one of the first people to reach out to him in the hospital, told him to get as much of his voice back as he could and they would do a road show Odd Couple. Jack initially told Tony he was nuts, no one would come to see it with his voice so squeaky but Tony would not let up! And finally Jack agreed, it was a great success and he continued to work albeit at a much less pace than before. I watched Larry King the night Randal passed and Klugman was on the show. The pain and sorrow Klugman showed proved what a wonderful friendship they had. Both were strong willed guys BTW. They had one skirmish early on with Randal telling Klugman how to play a scene. Klugman told him "Tony, we've both been in the business over 30 years, I won't tell you what to do, so don't tell me what to do and we'll get along". Tony agreed and they never had an issue again. Garry Marshall, on the other hand, did admit that there were a lot of battles during the show, mainly due to Tony but Jack sometimes would have issues too. But that's what great performers sometimes bring to the table. We the audience were just luck to see the greatest sitcom stars since Gleason and Carney.
this is the first time I've seen this. one thing i will say: always had a gut feeling jack klugman was an ok guy. which is more than i can say about many people. rip jack.
Trust Me, I'm Black! It also could not. He was unlucky. My mother is 57 and around the same age jack klugman was when he was diagnosed. My mother smokes a pack a day and is in good condition. It all depends how you're body handles nicotine.
Trust Me, I'm Black! If you cough the first time you smoke anything, it probably not for you. I know dummies the next town over from me that smoke weed and they are so dumbed down since they started.
Hell I'm 60 bought my 1st pack when I was 7! Of course didn't inhale back then but I love tobacco I roll my own organic cigarettes and I don't really care if it kills me. maybe it'll knock a couple of years off my terrible life,,, ever think that's why some people smoke? Whish I wanted to quit MyDaMnWoRd 😎🔫
I'll admit I was hesitant to watch this being a huge fan of the Odd Couple. I am not a big fan at all of recastings. I was especially disappointed to hear that Al Molinaro wouldn't be reprising his role as Murray and Janis Hansen would not be reprising her role as Gloria. But seeing Tony and Jack together again made it worth the watch. Absolutely histerical and men of Genius. I was also happy to see Penny Marshall return as Myrna and Garry Walberg return as Speed. Overall it was a very good watch and a great feel good story and now I regret being hesitant to watch it in the first place. Thank you so much for the upload 👍☺️
Thanks… 🎉 for bringing back excellent memories of my mum laughing soo loud! Now I laugh sooo much… I’m old enough to understand all of the depths of humour here and the chemistry is amazing, to be able to act so well! Talent and comedy plus!!!! ❤️❤️
Hat's off to Penny Marshall for appearing in this reunion show. This was 1993, and she had already been a sit com star in Laverne and Shirley and was fresh off of recently directing three big and successful movies (Big, Awakenings, A League Of Their Own). Many Hollywood types would have considered themselves too big or consider a TV novelty show as something beneath them at the peak of their career, but Penny was never a pretentious person, and obviously must have felt a very warm sentiment towards Klugman and Randall in not only making an appearance in recreating her Myrna role from 20 years prior, but actually contributing plenty of scenes and dialogue.
Mathau said in the original stageplay art Carney never got a laugh and was miserable for 2 full years. Lemmon, Randall, Glass and even TL had me in stiches as Felix. Its literally one of the funniest characters ever written.
I think Randall was the very best Felix out of anyone that ever played him. He embodied the role yet also brought so much to it like innate likability and sympathy that despite how annoying and crazy Felix was you still liked and rooted for him. Second best is Jack Lemmon.
@noochinator1 They only had a laugh track the first season. The rest were live audience that Jack and Tony insisted on and that's when Odd Couple became great.
Oddly enough, I think this was better than Neil Simon's own attempt to do a sequal to the ODD COUPLE, even if it did star the original duo, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
Even odder, was the fact that before either movie was made, Tony Randall appeared on talk shows and described the plot of Odd Couple 2 as the movie he and Jack Klugman were set to make.
I loved them so much and seen every episode ten times over. I've seen this before too. I gave this a Thumbs Up before watching it and if I could I would give it a Million Thumbs Up...
Thank you for sharing this. After watching the entire series, I was disappointed to find that this wasn't included in the series box set and that he hasn't received any DVD release.
A man of GREAT courage! Yes, I'm sure his friend TONY RANDALL was his "crutch to lean on" and God Bless him for urging Mr.Klugman to come back into public life. However, if he didn't have the will and drive to do it himself he'd've NEVER made it! How ironic that it'd be Tony Randall, the picture of health, who would precede his friend into the great mystery which awaits us all. I know they're BOTH giving command performances again together up in Heaven and the rumbles of thunder you hear occasionally on those classically "HHH" NY nights? That's the angels roaring with laughter. God Bless the memories and work of both these great souls. What a privilege and miracle it is that not just us but generations to follow will get to laugh as hard as we did at their performances. Kudos to the AUTHOR of the original work... ie. Neil Simon, for giving us this wonderful comedy and commentary on life and true friendship. BRAVO SIR! BRAVO!!!!
I just stumbled across this great TV movie ! - Was able to stop up to what this when younger Thank you for showing this ! - I must say that - Thats been uploaded from a very clear /HD Source !Right i'm gonna watch I now thankyou
Yep, they even did a Black Odd Couple with Demond Wilson (Lamont from Sanford and Son ) and Ron Glass (from Barney Miller) They did a female version of it, and a more recent version of it. I do have to say though Tony had the honking down great though.
@Putin TheGreatOne It really says something that out of all the duos that played Oscar and Felix the two that people remember and love most are Klugman and Randall. That says a lot about how powerful their chemistry was and how perfect the tv show was that it's to this day the most successful and popular version.
20:35 or so in... as Felix said before, "How comforting to know some things never change." Felix vacuums Oscar's pad when Oscar would rather keep it his way. Hmmm... I wonder if SESAME STREET named Oscar the Grouch for Oscar in THE ODD COUPLE.
SuperPat88 🤔 possibly? But it would not be from the tv Odd Couple because Sesame Street premiered a year before the Randal / Klugman TV version. Though someone at Sesame could have been familiar with the the original stage version.
I wish Paramount would cough-up the money for the rights to the music and re-release the series as originally broadcast. And include this as bonus material
Wow never knew this existed! This was definitely the peak of the syndication boom of the show where by then The Odd Couple was a gigantic hit through reruns. Loved what they did with the opening with the narrator and the theme. I really wish they got Al Molinaro back and was written by Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson. Though the movie was good it could've been even better with Marshall and Belson penning it.
Really enjoyed this when it first aired and again watching it here. Thanks for the upload. My only real grievance with the movie is that Gloria doesn't have even a remote resemblance or similar personality to Gloria from the series. I understand looks could change over a couple decades, but this Gloria doesn't have a single personality trait of the beautiful original Gloria. And for that matter, daughter Edna as an adult, bears no resemblance to child Edna.
@@putinthegreatone1055 Not to mention that two girls played Edna in the original series (the blonde one had a crush on Paul Williams), it would have been great if one played Edna here.
THE ODD COUPLE ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS OF ALL TIME GREAT SHOW WITH GREAT ACTORS 🌟🌟 THEIR FRIEND SHIP WAS SPECIAL IN REAL LIFE R.I.P 🙏 JACK AND TONY GOD BLESS THEIR SOULS 🌟🌟
Fun fact the apartment in this movie is the apartment they used for the odd couple movie with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. The apartment in the t.v. show was significantly different.
And the original Gloria as well as the original Edna. This Gloria was nothing like the sitcom Gloria. I remember this Gloria played Judy Benjamin' s mother in Private Benjamin . It was great seeing Oscar, Felix and Myrna together again though. And for once I actually agreed with Felix on this 1.
I loved Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in the original movie and in the "Grumpy Old Men" series. They also played Oscar and Felix in other movies here and there. Jack Klugman had some big shoes to fill in the TV series, but he did it perfectly. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall were as good as the original actors. Also loved Jack Klugman in "Quincy, M.E." and "Match Game." I always thought that Charlie and Alan Harper from "Two and a Half Men" were based on Oscar and Felix. I think other people might have said this. That must be why the show was so great.
Tony Randall, Dick Van Patten, Penny Marshall & Jack Klugman (R.I.P) Barbara Barrie & Toni Kalem - Private Benjamin Jerry Adler - Mad about You Debra Jo Rupp - That 70's Show
I think it's a funny, honest movie in that they deal with Klugman's throat cancer operation. I also like the fact that they didn't drown it in canned laughter, like they did for many of the first season episodes. I don't really need to be told if something is funny or not.
I remember when this was being advertised and how excited I was. Then I realized how many of the original actors weren't there and it just wasn't the same. Interesting how they went back to the original apartment from the 1968 movie and Season One of the TV show.
Amazing this movie got made. Both actors good in their roles, and although downbeat storyline, it's real like 'life'🤔. These guys make me laugh, so I'm willing to also share the negative aspects of their life! 2 Great Actors, as well as hats off to Neil Simon for the creation of two lovable characters 🤩!!
Salute to NEAL HEFTI who actually composed the catchy, famous Odd Couple theme first for the original movies, then it was featured in the tv series. Shame on the producers for not giving him credit in the beginning credits. Maybe Charles Fox, who was credited with "Music," added more music or rearranged Hefti's theme. (Maybe they mentioned Hefti in the closing credits? UPDATE/EDIT I did see Hefti's name tucked into the end credits, but it should have been in the beginning, just as Henry Mancini is given credit for his "Pink Panther" theme although others now add additional music) Hefti also composed the theme song for tv's Batman series, exquisite soundtracks for at least 2 comedic movies ("How To Murder Your Wife" & "Sex & The Single Girl") and wrote many compositions & arrangements for The Count Basie Orchestra as well as playing as one of the Musicians in it.
Thanks for posting! Not great, but reunion shows very seldom are. But there were a few nice moments sprinkled about. It was cool to see Garry Walberg reprise his role of "Speed." However, I think this really should have been done in front of a live audience. That's where Tony and Jack found their energy and magic.
In general TV movies were never known for their phenomenal scripts, it was a sweet reunion of most of the cast. Wasn't going to get any award nominations but was a fun watch and did quite well in the ratings.
Klugman and Randall were TRUE comedic geniuses! Way better than Walter Mathew and Jack Lemon who played Oscar and Felix in the movie prior to the great TV series. As for this 1993 tv movie, in all my many years watching the original 1970s Odd Couple tv series, I've never seen or even heard of this tv movie. I only hopped around on this video, but, from what I've seen of it, it's dry as dust, and in no way a good or fair representation of the classic 1970s tv series.
Great inside joke at 19:53. The pari-mutuel ticket Felix finds in the shirt is a $50 win bet on Genuine Risk in the 1980 Kentucky Derby. The horse won (a 13 year old ticket is obviously no longer valid lol). The horse that finished third that day? Jaklin Klugman, owned by (and named after) none other than Oscar Madison himself!!
I always found it hard to believe that someone into being clean like Felix would live in New York city the filthiest place maybe on earth! I mean even people who are not neat freaks cannot handle it there.
