There has been a lot of discussion about the tiny house solar battery bank wiring and fuses. So I took a few minutes to explain how I wired up the tiny house solar power and some of the future plans and changes.
I have a thicker 6 gauge wire connected to the positive wire of my tiny home solar battery bank and running to a fuse block. Currently the fuse block has two 80 amp fuses which are too large. I plan to drop these down to 60 amps. The 6 gauge wire is rated for about 73 amps so this should work out fine.
There seems to be some concern also about water dripping down onto the wires. The drain pipe extends under the kitchen counter from one end to the other. But what you cannot see on camera is that it is close to the wall. There is a space between the battery bank and the drain pipe. So even if there was a water leak, it would fall onto the floor next to the batteries and not onto the solar battery bank.
The wires that I tied onto the drain pipe are exterior grade wires so they can handle the weather, meaning rain and moisture. They are coated in plastic on top of the insulation to protect them from the elements. All connections to the fuse block and power distribution block are above the drain pipe. So if there was ever a leak, then water would simply run off onto the floor.
I will move my inverter though because it is only temporarily sitting on the floor under the water drain pipe. This will not be staying there.
From the main fuse block I have another fuse block which is the distribution block for my tiny house on wheels. This fuse block will lead off into each individual wire in the tiny house.
I have a common negative terminal strip coming from the battery bank where all my negative wires connect to. This is also high up and above any water lines.
Soon I will get my new forklift battery bank for my tiny house solar power and I will run the batteries outside in an insulated box of their own. My main power lines will then go outside the tiny house to the battery bank.
This will free up the storage under the tiny home kitchen counter for other things such as food, pits and pans.
Follow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.

Just enjoying this latest off-grid project video while wearing my comfy off-grid project hooded sweatshirt that I got today. Quick word of advice to anybody that bought one: wash before wearing. I wore mine on the way to the gym and when I was on the treadmill the guy behind me turned on a fan and green fluff blew across the gym. I knew that it had come from me, it must have stuck to my head when I pulled off the off-grid sweatshirt, which is why I said in a loud voice, "Where did THAT come from?" I love this thing!

Troy to get a cell loose or pulled out can you back your truck up to a big tree limb or under a frame ? Then raise the truck bed a little bit and attach a "J" hook of some type to the tree or frame and into the fill hole of the cell.Next lower your truck bed and see if you can get gravity to help you break one of those cells loose to pull it out.I don't know if this will work for you or not,just another idea.Things are looking good around there with the FL batteries to experiment with and some more coming.Happy New Year and thanks for the great videos.

I think that fork lift battery will be very useable even though its old. Since you removed the dead cells I dont see any problems with it. I bet its one heck of power house of storage. park that battery by your tiny house and use it I bet its awesome. build a box around it and put some insulation around it. put a dyer vent hose on the box with heat coming from your house with a tiny cpu fan. It will heat the box and keep the batts warm. put the vent in the bottom since heat rises.

What you said was nice but can you do it without yelling? All capitals are not only hard to read and give many of us headaches, they are considered to be yelling when used in internet communications such as this. Maybe you did not know that. I'm sure you did not mean to yell and don't want to give us headaches either, or make it hard for us to read your comments.

From your explanation, you have one 73A rated wire carrying current to a fuse box, which will have multiple 60A fuses in it. This is insufficient to protect the wire, as the currents are cumulative. That is, you can have (for example) 50A being drawn through each of the two output cables, and that load won't blow any fuses, but the input cable will be still be supplying 100A. Best to either double up your input cable, or have a "master" fuse in-line on the cable, rated to what the input cable can support. (I'm nearly caught up now, sorry for the belated comments on older videos...!)

I see many people who live off grid, have a separate shed they put their battery's in. I think if you do anymore than you already have in your little house, that you should do it in a seperate shed. That way your main power is away from anything that could damage them, or if anything happen's to them away from your house. Anything electronic, burn's electricity even if turned off, you have to have a disconect that completly removes them from the connection. Like a power strip, that you can turn off. =)

Hi Troy 60 amp fuses are still big for the electric wire coming from the battery. you could potentially draw up to 120 amps - 2 60 amp fuses in parallel. with that set up. with your current set up you need one 60 amp fuse in series with your supply line, or 2 - 30 amp fuses in parallel, or a cable capable of handeling the total fused capicity you are placing on your battery. / Craig

Hey Troy. Is there a reason you left the straps on the FL battery? I watched you hopping around them on the other vid and would LOVE to see those straps GONE asap. I am imagining you tripping and loosing a bunch of teeth or knocking yourself out some day. Try sliding a carpenter's saw blade between the cells, "cutting" the white crud which is now effectively cementing them in the box. Mix a potent solution of baking soda & water & pour between the cells once they're loosened up a bit too. Happy trails.

You'll have to pull those out individually. They must be 100 lbs plus per 2v battery. Cut one side out of the metal box. No lifting that way. Get another trailer and build the "Tiny House Power Station" to contain your battery bank and generator. I like the concept of using the 2V cells.

But what i was saying you need a fuse at the other end of the power wire right next to the battery to protect your 6 amp wire coming from the batts. I will have to make a video for you watch for a new one.

Troy, with all the huge timber you have from the barn haul, have you considered making an 'A' frame style cherry picker lift,,, to get your batteries on and off your truck? I do not know if you have any com-a longs big enough to handle 1K each. Just back the truck under the lift.. hook to the eyelets on the battery and let it down slowly to a pallet.

If you hook up the two sets of 12-volt banks in parallel, you'll get a 12-volt, 1,050 amp/hour battery bank. That over 12 kilowatts (6 usable kilowatts) of storage capacity for the Tiny Home on Wheels. That's close to a third of the daily electrical use of the average American home. If you can refurbish 12 of those 2-volt batteries, you'll be in great shape.

now about the fuze's. You are talking about putting all 60 amps to replace the 80 amp. Looks like that fuze box holds 4 fuze's. 60x4 is 240 amps and you still have just the one 6 gauge wire coming from the battery. You can keep the fuze's the way they are as a main protection fuze I would use the Fuze block with the fork lift battery Since you will have at least 2 12 volt packs with the current fork lift battery, and if you get the new one also and if they both are good together you can hook it up to the fuze block out side that way each bank is fuzed with 80 amp fuze or smaller to protect the battery bank and he home, then get a 00 cable to run from fuze block to run inside to a fuze block for each piece of equipment. and chose the fuze right for the equipment. Reason I say this is wiring is must to have done right. if now it will get hot and cause problems. the best wire to use is Welding cable it has a fire prof insulation, and battery cable wire is also good. Don't ever use speaker wire for solar wire. Its ok if in a pinch but not for long term. When you get the second fork lift battery and if all goes well you will have enough power to last days on that home, when fully charged. also get a good desulfator that you can leave on the battery bank it will keep it maintained at all times.

Hi Troy. I think I noticed you keep the chicken food in a bin outside. It's been very wet, and their food may have molded slightly in the bin you store it in. The mold may be so slight you havent noticed it. If there is any mold (even unseen to you) in their food, they will pick up a few pieces, spit them out and refuse to eat anymore of it. Get them fresh dry feed, throw out the old supply and try again. Store it in a bin with an airtight cover and store in a dry place. Yes, this may mean inside the tiny house if your campers gets moldy and damp. It's worth a shot, or they will starve on ya. And place feed outside when they eat in dry clean pans or feeders and not on the wet ground. Good luck!

That was well said and Troy, Barbs is right so listen to her. I had not noticed where you store your feed. I know that you would never do anything to harm those chickens but who would have known that the weather would be as wet as it is at this time of the year...perfect for growing mold on just about anything and grains are exceptionally vulnerable.

You can buy a bag of crystals you mix with distilled water to rejuvenate old batteries on ebay. I have seen the alum battery projects and am going to be getting back into that but the lead alum batteries have lower voltages which is tough for modern electronics. I do not trust magic chemicals though. Just my opinion.

The Do It Yourself World Troy I see what you are saying about not trusting "magic chemicals" but remember to keep an open mind. If several people have used it and say it works then it is no dif than the bedini motor so many say do not work yet you use them and swear by them to work. Never hurts to try especially since you have so many unused batteries laying around and really what is 12 bucks sure its 2 days worth of food or something but if it works then you could have so much power your videos would be about not having enough things to use the power you have

are you sure that amps ar flowing in your battery's when u use te smal generator? have seen in practice that when using those smal generators to power a transformer chargers that the charge voltages and amps are a lot lower then when used on grid power, sugest you mesure the outcomming voltage from the genny under load, if you turn the genny up a little in rpm, the voltage will rise a little, giving better performance under load with the transformer charger (dont overdo!) sugest you mesure the real charge amps whit a amp meter.

When charging a deep cycle lead acid battery the charging takes place in 3 stages. Bulk, Absorption and Float, this is why some chargers are referred to as being 3-Stage. The Bulk Charge: This is the first stage of 3-stage battery charging. The charger sends the current through to the cells at the maximum safe voltage they can handle. There is no correct voltage on this but generally it ranges from 10.5 to 15 or so volts. This stage charges the battery up to somewhere near 80% to 90% of its capacity. Absorption Charge: During this second stage of the charging cycle the voltage remains constant then gradually lowers as the internal resistance in the battery increases as it charges. This is the stage that the charger will generally put out the maximum voltage that it can and is generally around 14.2 to 15.5 volts. Float Charge: After the battery reaches its full charge during the absorption phase of charging the charging voltage drops down to around 12.8 to 13.2 volts in order to reduce gassing and prolong the life of the battery. This stage is also sometimes referred to as a "Maintenance Charge" which is left on the whole time the battery is not being used so as to ensure that the battery is fully charged and able to function at it's full capacity when it is needed. Chargers: Not all chargers are created equal; there is a huge difference between what a good quality three stage charger will do for your battery and what a cheap charger will do to your battery. The best chargers are 3-stage and have various safety features on them, such as not allowing current to flow till they detect a battery is connected and connected correctly. Also they may be fan cooled and have features like automatic temperature correction, short circuit protection and so forth. The other type of battery charger is generally one that will have none of the built in safety features that are mentioned above and will not automatically shut off or lower the voltage after the battery has gotten past the bulk charge stage. This makes it possible to do significant damage to your battery even to the point of a critical failure . You need to get a deep cycle charger. That auto motive one you have is just boiling them.

I haven't seen all Troy's videos but I have watched a few. Never heard him say or show battery voltage over 14 but he has been happy saying the charge controller shows ~13.8 and that they are topped off. If they never get over 14 they're not topped off. Maybe a dead cell and the others are boiling like crazy. I think the 20amp automotive charger should take the two six volts through the bulk charge phase even if sulfated like he says but I haven't seen it. Good information in your post and nice contribution to the cause.

***** WHY EQUALIZE BATTERIES While a battery is being discharged, sulfuric acid in the electrolyte reacts with the lead plates in a chemical reaction which produces electricity and lead sulfate. When the battery is re-charged, electricity flows back into the battery and causes a reverse chemical reaction which turns the lead sulfate back into lead and sulfuric acid. However, with each discharge and recharge cycle, a small amount of lead sulfate will remain on the plates. Using a three stage charger will minimize the amount of residual sulfate left on the plates but some will still accumulate with each discharge and recharge cycle. If this sulfate is left in place for very long, it will harden or crystallize and eventually reduce the batteries capacity, increase its internal resistance and destroy the batteries ability to produce an adequate amount of power. When this occurs, even an equalize charge cannot remove the sulfate and the battery becomes useless except as an item to be recycled to reclaim the lead and prevent contamination of the environment. Also, in batteries that are in a standby condition at float charge for extended periods, the electrolyte tends to stratify into layers with higher concentrations of acid near the bottom of each cell and more diluted electrolyte near the top because the acid is heavier than the water. This causes uneven specific gravity within a cell further reducing its capacity, efficiency and life span. This uneven specific gravity causes the top portion of each cell to accumulate more sulfate on the plates, and the more acidic electrolyte lower in the cells can accelerate corrosion of the plates. THE EQUALIZING PROCESS An equalizing charge is a controlled overcharging cycle which performs several actions within the battery and provides certain benefits. During equalize, the voltage is raised to approximately 2.7 volts per cell, or about 16.2 volts for a 12 volt battery. The current output of the charger should be limited to about 5% of the battery’s capacity. In other words, a 100 amp hour battery should be allowed to accept no more than about 5 amps of current. This will help prevent overheating. The equalize cycle is normally timed to be between 4 and 8 hours, The particular battery manufacturer’s recommendations for equalization time should be followed. The charge cycle should always be terminated early if necessary to prevent problems and hazards mentioned later in this procedure. This elevated voltage results in a vigorous charging action to take place within each cell which has several beneficial effects on the battery. First, much of the residual sulfate is forced to re-combine with the electrolyte in the form of sulfuric acid. Crystallized sulfate which will not re-combine is broken loose from the plates and falls harmlessly to the bottom of the battery. Deep cycle batteries have additional space beneath the plates intended to collect this material as sediment. This action cleans the plates exposing fresh lead to the electrolyte and restores battery capacity. The vigorous bubbling action which occurs during equalize stirs up the electrolyte and restores it to a consistent mixture of acid and water. The equalizing process also causes all cells in a battery to reach their maximum idle potential of 2.113 volts. It also lowers the internal resistance of each cell and makes them more even.
@joefm525
@joefm525 9 лет назад
Joe F M WHEN TO EQUALIZE It is best to check with the battery manufacturer’s recommendations before equalizing since each manufacturer has slightly different suggestions on how often and how long to equalize their batteries. But, as a general rule, it is a good practice to equalize batteries after every 10 or 12 deep discharge and re-charge cycles. For batteries in constant discharge and recharge usage, this would mean about every two weeks. For periodic users, it would mean about two or three times a year. For seasonal users, this could mean at the beginning and end of the season. For batteries that are normally in a standby application, every 6 months or once a year is a good practice, or when un-even water usage, specific gravity, cell voltages, or cell resistance is detected. When using a battery monitor such as a Link 2000, equalizing should be done when you notice the Charge Efficiency Factor (CEF) of the battery or bank begin to drop. HOW TO EQUALIZE Again, check with the battery manufacturer’s recommendations, but as a general rule, the following steps should be observed: 1. Only attempt to equalize wet cell deep cycle batteries. Never equalize gel batteries or maintenance free wet cell batteries. 2. The batteries should be fully charged and near ambient temperature before beginning an equalize charging cycle. 3. There should be a sufficient amount of electrolyte in each cell to cover the plates, but do not top-off each cell until after equalizing. Since there is some heating of the cells during equalize and some electrolyte will be displaced by the increased bubbling action within the cells, the electrolyte will expand and could overflow the cells if they were topped-off before equalizing. This would not only make a mess, but force you to terminate the equalize cycle too early to gain maximum benefit and would result in diluted electrolyte when water is added to replace the missing electrolyte. 4. Leave the caps on each cell. The caps are vented, and when left in place will prevent splattering of electrolyte onto the top of the battery when the bubbles pop. Caps are designed to capture the droplets and return the electrolyte to the cells. It is a good idea to lay a paper towel over the caps. This makes it easy to spot a cell that may start spitting electrolyte, and will soak up the liquid when this does happen. 5. Since the batteries will give off significant quantities of explosive hydrogen and oxygen gas during equalize, plus produce moisture which will contain some amount of corrosive sulfuric acid, it is imperative that sufficient ventilation be provided. Avoid smoking or generating any sparks or flame near the batteries during this charge cycle. 6. All DC loads on the batteries should be turned OFF and disconnected. Since the battery voltage will be higher then normal during this charge cycle, some DC equipment could be damaged if left ON. Also these loads would draw current from the charger which should be available to the battery instead. 7. Equalize only one bank of batteries at a time. 8. With some chargers, to limit the charging current to 5% of the battery capacity, you may need to manually adjust the current or the voltage output. 9. During the equalize cycle, periodically check the batteries for any spitting cells and if this begins to happen, terminate the equalize cycle early. This is an indication that the battery is going into thermal run-away. Do not start an equalize cycle and then leave the batteries unattended. 10. After equalizing, turn OFF the charging source, and allow the batteries to cool to ambient temperature before resuming normal float charging. After the batteries cool is a good time to check the specific gravity in each cell. They should all be 1.265 +/- .050 at 60 degrees F. 11. Refill each cell with distilled water up to the FULL indicator.

***** That's exactly it. These batteries are never getting what they need. It will be the same for any battery he buy's, forklift battery, gulf cart battery, or any flooded lead acid battery. He has a good solar charge controller but if the sun doesn't shine long enough, or the panels and amps aren't right, well this is the result. With any off grid solar system you have to do these cycles to the batteries, or you are just throwing your money in the garbage. He just needs to get a charger that will do what these batteries need. He also needs to get a generator that doesn't put out dirty electric. That generator he has is just over heating the transformer in that automotive charger. I had one of those generators and it blew out the electronics in my fridge, cost me $250 to repair!

If you have an aldi grocery store by you they have some pretty decent generators for $130 they're 1200 watt 2000 peak Watts they are around the same price as the harbor freight one but more wattage. They only have them once a year usually in the spring... I have the green one it has built in battery charger. The blue one has a cigarette lighter type plug in along with the 2 120 outlets on them..

A lot better than some local tiny house folks have done. Heck even some local tiny house folks who bought ready made new tiny houses on wheels made here in California, realized the layout wasn't the best for their needs, or the solar set up was below par. Live and learn, but learn as much from other peoples mistakes can save a person a LOT of grief and money.

Troy, Since you have power coming into the battery bank from the charge controller and power leaving the battery bank on different busses, you might want to check out a power meter like this one which will do 130A. www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__10080__Turnigy_130A_Watt_Meter_and_Power_Analyzer.html In this way, you can see the real-time battery consumption. The charge controller, main inverter, and losses in the DC-DC converters in all the various chargers add to the load. I wouldn't be surprised if you had a continuous 1-amp load without charging any devices. It's all good. You just have to measure it and account for it in your sizing. Another suggestion would be to install some disconnects on the input and output battery busses. I have had good success with the $6 electrical disconnects from Home Depot. Thanks for the videos!

You seem to be getting it with your fusing. There is a short piece of wire unfused from the battery to the first fuse there is no way to avoid this but that wire must be in a safe place and short. The fuse you put upstairs must be fused with a suitable fuse down stares unless it is a 6 gauge wire that is fused there already as I said you fuse your wire a 12 gauge wire can be fused at 20 amps . I found wire size on internet before 6 is about 70 amps 12 is 20 amps 14 is 15 amps. But I can't find those charts today all I can find is where wirers burn up. Remember fuse wire near source if you are bringing a wire up stares to use it must be fused near the battery if it is 6 gauge another 60 amp fuse or off a 60 amp fuse you are using for something else is fine but when you leave the 6 gauge wire you must fuse for the individual circuits. Now in 12 volt wiring you are using wire size so as not to have a voltage drop you can fuse a lot smaller but remember a wire (wire size) is fused at source of that wire size.

Troy. Your wire looks okay but your terms into the blocks are not waterproof. Water can splash up and hit the blocks causing a short. I would have to check to be sure but I do not think the 2014 edition on the NEC (National Electric Code) would approve your installation. So it would not pass an inspection for building code or insurance. You might want to rework with that in mind. I do hope you are going to insure. If not one accident and all your work is for naught.

how has the land lady not came out to see this mess? I have to wonder if she has any idea what a mess this scrap pile in the meadow has became? now that there's a warm safe place to sleep, if I owned that property I would have already demanded cleanup and removal of that RV mess, now that all attention is in the 40,000 lb house once on wheels, the RV is only going to rot and return to the elements. should be filled with mice again in no time. health hazard brewing. this time last year you were teaching Australians about solar power and building their own battery banks. fast forward a year, you've struggled for couple months to do what should have been very straight forward repairs and installs to get the 40,000lb house on axles wired and running. so what's youtube pay per subscriber now? how are you maintaining such high subscriber count and not well funded enough for this?

People probably think that wiring is unsafe because it looks like a big rats nest. How much money are you spending on fuel compared to the Kilowatt you are actually getting? Sounds like if the generator runs for 6 hours and it cost you say $1 for 1 KW, you'd be 10x the price of electricity on the grid, not good. I think that info would be helpful for others. Hope you have better luck with the forklift batteries.
@mollydolly869
@mollydolly869 9 лет назад
On grid is always cheaper. The question is what if you want to live where there is no grid reasonably available? Or what if we have a massive grid failure? The price of grid power is then irrelevant. But, it is certainly worth noting the price of fuel for the back up generators and how long they will run on that fuel.

Pesonally the pallots are not nice as your house is it will look like Okie construction. I am from Oklahoma so I can say that. Dont use pallots for walls and a roof for a porch. It will look like hell. Make a nice porch they dont cost that much for post and some 2x6s and a pice of plywood for the roof. and then some shingles or some metal for a roof. Please dont degrade your tiny house with a junky pallot porch bad idea. I would use them for a floor and cover them with plywood or deck boards but not for walls it will look junky. My opiion. I think Im correct. Pallots are not as classy as a tiny house. Fine for a floor but when errect they look like crap.
