you know at least the characters genuinely failed, and failed because they were weak-willed and not because the writers made them incurably stupid

@@niccolodeparmapanini2036I mean if they’re putting their faith in Art then aren’t they also stupid? @@supercereal1 Art was weak in a reasonably human way. The rest of them were reasonably aware of what was at stake, not just the binding of the demon, but having to take their own life, and we’re willing to let Art commit that sacrifice. @@TheZanzibarMan Demon is simplified version of the word "dæmon" and was pronounced as "dae-mon" which is where it originated from so he isn't wrong there if he was European. This thought is still a jumbled mess in my head, but your comment is a good thesis for an argument in media literacy. Christian movies have always struggled to be captivating since the resolution of every film is “believe in god” and other questionable morals. Christian media doesn’t even tackle its own past, typically the antagonist is a a demonized atheist or a caricature of a group conservative Christians hate. What this movie shows is that you can have a film that deals with a spiritual conflict and grounds it in supernatural horror. So that conflict can work. We just watched the evidence that this frame work is entertaining. It doesn’t even have a resolution of “just believe in god”.
@LoveYouLove1986
@LoveYouLove1986 Год назад
@@therecombinant6215 Have you seen Midnight Mass? There's plenty of movies that aren't just "propaganda". "Evil" on Paramount+ is good too. Plenty of media where the characters are critical of religion but not portrayed as being "evil". I'm not sure if you're referring to the mainstream/horror genre or not though. Because if it's just a Christian based movie, it makes sense it would just be about Christian stuff lol Like, if I watch a romance movie and it's all about "love"..well yea, that's to be expected, lol
@abccba4889
@abccba4889 Год назад
@@LoveYouLove1986 Honestly, Midnight Mass is more a critique of christianity than a christian movie so it wouldn’t make much sense for its message to be “believe in god”. In that, while if it gets severe enough it can go wild, but for the most part it's very "in your head" rather than physical craziness. And of course, binding the force to an object. I really adore the Jewishness of it all, honestly. Art also has an interesting theme of running away from his fears/emotions. He clearly fled his Jewishness because of the emotions & fears it caused him.

When it comes to Jewish lore, I've heard a few things about demons or "shaydim". There are really two camps when it comes to this stuff and I've been in close contact with both. The main camp is the one that just doesn't really believe in demons and from what I can tell that is most Jews. This is where I find myself. I don't believe in demons and don't like the idea of them so when it comes to things that involve them I don't think they mean anything and I also don't wanna tempt fate just in case. Most rabbis also don't believe in them but acknowledge their belief by others and kinda blow it off. The thing about rabbis tho is they always seem to know more than they let on but that's them. The next group is the more mystical type that believe in kaballah, Jewish mysticism, the shit Madonna was into. I grew up with friends that had direct ties to the Kaballah center in California and they say some weird stuff. To preffice, shaydim in mysticism are very specific. They are people like creatures with chicken feet, that's how you know they are demons is their feet. What they can do is mimic your body and take over your life essentially, not cool dudes. The big story about them that I think put em on the map was king Solomon got into some shit with a shaydim and they took over the kingdom and disguised as him for a while. Dude got his kingdom back but it was a whole thing. What I've also heard about shaydim from rabbis is that you shouldn't mess with them and there are things to do to avoid them. From what I remember it's to not stand near a body of water alone at night and don't like say their names or something. Kaballah is weird and I like most yids don't follow the mysticism stuff. It's predicated on some weird rules like you have to have studied all the books of Moses (the old testament), other works by rabbis, be over 40 years old, and have a few kids so when you start you don't just GO INSANE. I don't subscribe to these opinions but I don't mess with it. Don't have time for these chicken feet demons, I got other shit to do. Just wanted to give info to those who might be curious, there's a lot of stuff when it comes to being Jewish and I've spent too much time in religious school to not at least talk about it on the Internet. Great vid btw as always.

@Moonhermit-
@Moonhermit- Год назад
@@Gumunista Pazuzu was the Akkadian personification of the southwestern wind and king of the Lilu wind demons. Because of his inhuman and grotesque appearance, he was also used in white magic to scare off all kinds of unwanted guests. His main antagonist was Lamastu, the lion-headed demoness who preyed upon pregnant women and newborn children to devour. Although Pazuzu, as the personification of the southwestern wind, symbolized famine and drought, he was also primarily invoked to ward off Lamastu as the only thing she feared most.

My only question is why when you find the sacrifice carvings on the floor they didn't try to destroy it that way it couldn't use it? Or is that never a option?
@fabulousjekster28
@fabulousjekster28 Год назад
I mean, I'm pretty sure that the carvings were into the floor and wasn't just a painting or something. It would take a lot of time to take it off and probably have to destroy most of the floor area, so even if they tried the demon would have plenty of time to stop them

Do you think there's a reason that the costume dept chose to put Art in a snug black turtleneck with a very prominent zipper tab right at the top of the neck? It makes it look like a priest's collar. Wondering if it's a reference to Judaism vs. Catholicism in it's thoughts on handling the topic of demons.

I don't think demons usually have sex technically. Two almost all possession movies have women as the possessed or hero. Horror movies just in general are very female focused TBH.
@tarotsushima3332
@tarotsushima3332 Год назад
@@dianapennepacker6854 I think that's a case by case basis. A lot of possession type horror movies do have a focus on women, but mostly as the victims of demonic possession (horror directors' obsession with the 'Tainting of Purity' trope) but not as many where a female demon exists bc she wasn't spited or wrongfully killed and is now back for revenge. I think this and Deadstream are some of the few movies I can think of where the female demon/possessor is just absolutely antagonistic. But you're more than welcome to prove me wrong bc I'm no horror connoiseur.
