All aboard the OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS! Today we take you one of the most epic train journeys in the world, made even more famous by Paul Theroux's 1979 account "The Old Patagonian Express", where he sought to ride trains all the way from his hometown in Massachusetts all the way down to Argentina.
Today, the Old Patagonian Express may only be a fraction of what it once was, but it’s an exciting journey nevertheless, and we knew we had to ride it! This tourist steam train may cover only a short distance, but it’s a fun way to experience the nostalgia of early 20th-century train travel and it also allows you to soak in the magical landscapes of the Patagonian steppe.
To give you a bit more information, in Spanish, this steam train is known as La Trochita; this translates to ‘little gauge’ and it’s a nickname that refers to the train’s super narrow gauge of only 75 centimetres!
The Old Patagonian Express is a railway line was originally planned as part of a larger network that would connect all of Patagonia, however, the project was never completed due to ministerial changes and then the start of the First World War, which also affected Argentina’s economy.
Today the Old Patagonian Express operates on alternating locomotives; one is a Baldwin from the United States and the other a Henschel from Germany. The wooden wagons came from Belgium, and the heaters, well those were later installed in Argentina to make the journeys across Patagonia in winter a little more bearable.
You can take this journey from a few different stations. This one here is the journey from Esquel to Nahuel Pan. When you arrive in Nahuel Pan, you have 45 minutes to visit the artisanal fair, a small museum, and also buy food for a quick lunch. We went for the choripan (chorizo in a bun), alfajores and torta frita.
Overall, we really enjoyed riding aboard the Old Patagonian Express. As we've mentioned this is a classic train journey and if you enjoy train travel, it's well worth checking out!

The OLD PATAGONIAN EXPRESS: Epic STEAM TRAIN Ride in Patagonia, Argentina 🚂
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a travel vlogging couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
We had the privilege of traveling around Argentina for nearly 3 months from January- April 2019 on a trip covering a large section of the country.
We kicked things off with several days in Buenos Aires where we were joined by Audrey's parents eating and sightseeing around some of our favourite neighbourhoods in the city. We spent several days enjoying beaches and seafood before heading south to Patagonia to visit the province of Chubut.
Our time in Patagonia continued as we headed from east to west trading more barren landscapes for thick forests, impressive mountains and magnificent lakes. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival.
We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey's dad again.
To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country.
Overall our Argentina travel series explores cities, small towns that are off-the-beaten-path, and scenic attractions with a strong emphasis on Argentina cuisine and local culture.

Southern Argentina looks like Switzerland, Austria, even like Montana, USA, too...It's hard to believe that is South America ! Even the people look of European descent ! What an amazing country, Argentina.

Thanks Linda! Totally agree with you about the landscapes. It is even more rugged the further south you go. We'll be showing more of that in a future series.

In 1870 the population was 2 million people and until around 1930 5 million immigrants arrived to Argentina mainly from Europe (52% from Italy, 35% from Spain and the rest French, English, German, Ukrainian, Jewish and Lebanese). That's why we look the way we look. My Great Grandfather was an American navy engineer from New York that went to Argentina after the Civil War.

It was a fun journey! We ended up riding a different section of the Old Patagonian Express a few months later, but this route was the best because of the food, museum and artisanal fair at the end. And yes, those sausages were good! Had the line not been so long we would've lined up for a second one. 😉

Very interesting. Lovely scenery. I love to see your interaction with the dogs. What an amazing country. I love trains too. Maybe someday I’ll get the chance to do this trip. I also like the idea of driving a vehicle over long distances. I did a lot of driving in Europe through France Spain and Portugal in particular. It is safe in that Europe mostly. No armed robbers. I would need to check out Argentina before. I watched a lovely Argentinian film called el Camino a La Paz and in the plot the men get robbed somewhere in the pampas I believe. Anyway enjoyed your train trip. Lucky you. Thanks.

Ahhh, very cool! We also enjoy road trips and are toying with the idea of doing a big one later this year. We have rented cars in Argentina before, but only when we're travelling in more rural areas where there is limited bus service and less traffic. I'll have to check out the movie - we haven't seen that one yet!

Hi Sam and Audrey. great video!! I still find it amazing even now that a few British inventions changed the world forever. The steam train, with Stephensons Rocket, which opened up frontiers across the world, and the distribution of fresher food and communities, which expanded our countries growth, the internet, by Tim Berners Lee, the computer, by Alan Turin at Bletchley Park breaking codes during WW2, Radar, TV, The jet engine, by Frank Whittle, hovercraft, by Christopher Cockerell, supersonic passenger flight with Concorde We even invented champagne, which the French dispute, and cheddar cheese. telecommunications which ran under the oceans worldwide from Cornwall across the globe to every outpost in the British Empire, and so much more! All these things make me proud to be British. xxx

Wow, that is fascinating to hear! Had no idea about champagne.

@@samuelandaudrey There are a lot of things that have been invented here that the world does not realise., even curries, though we got the idea from India with various spices when they were part of the British Empire and adapted it. Hence the explosion of Indian restaurants here going back half a century. Some have meat in, but they are mainly vegetarian, as is the diet across most of India. You might have tried some of them in England, and half of them will blow your socks off! Did you know we grow the worlds hottest chilli? Though please don't try it, it's off the scale!! You'd end up in hospital Lol!

There are some excursions from El Calafate to Cueva de las Manos, check this out: todocalafate.com/perito-moreno/tours-excursiones/ . But I rather recommend you to take a bus from El Calafate to the little town called Perito Moreno (not the glacier), stay there to hire the local excursions, not only to Cueva de las Manos but also to nearby Chilean attractions. Then continue by bus to Esquel or Bariloche where you can take a flight back to Buenos Aires. . To book bus tickets check plataforma10.com.ar
