"The Oldest Mask Ever Found": The Mysterious Stone Masks Of The Judean Desert

Several decades ago, a farmhand stumbled across an unusual discovery in the Judean Desert of southern Israel while plowing his field near the village of el-Hadeb. It appeared to be a stone face resembling no particular individual and with no clear place of origin.
It is unknown what happened to the mask until, in 1970, Moshe Dayan, Israel's Minister of Defense, purchased it.
Dayan's writings recall, "I was fortunate to acquire a ritual article from this region, a magnificent mask. [...] The marvel, apart from its age, lies in its facial expression. It has circles for eyes, a small nose, and prominent grinning teeth. It is a human face, but one that strikes terror in its beholder. If there is any power in the world able to banish evil spirits, it must assuredly dwell in this mask."
Art historians were equally enamored, drawn in by the carvings' quality and the mask's expression. Whereas Dayan may have described the mask as "grinning," others have stated that the ten-toothed mouth depicts a scream.
The grotesque and horrific expression of the mask led some to speculate that it may be a death mask made of a prominent Neolithic Israelite or that it could have relevance to ancient burial rituals that historians do not yet understand.
Clearly taken with the artifact, Dayan, upon his death in 1981, donated it to the Israel Museum.
Archeologists and anthropologists later decided to retrace Dayan's footsteps to the farm from which the mask was recovered. Numerous artifacts from the pre-pottery era were found at the site, which turned out to be a sizeable Neolithic village.
With modern methods, the archeological team soon determined these finds, including the Dayan Mask, to be some 9,000 years old. This meant that the Dayan Mask was the oldest surviving mask ever discovered. However, it was not until the mask was compared to other archeological discoveries made in the region that the bigger picture finally began to take shape...

There is a wide range of expressions on these masks. Some are grim. Others more naturalistic. But there's something particularly disturbing about the mask mentioned in the beginning of the video as well as being on the thumbnail. I remember reading about the legend of the moloch cult (either entirely fabricated by monotheistic cultures, or partially true, depending on what camp you're in) in Canaan. I won't get into much of the disturbing details except that child sacrifice was involved and the burning tissue would contract. This would leave a rather disturbing grin on the burned corpses. This grin is known as the sardonic smile. And that's what that mask's expression is reminding me of. A grin of joy in the suffering of others.

The city of Gezer exists and the stones that were used in sacrificing their children are still there. The actual victims are moved to a museum which sadly doesn't display the extent of the abhorrent actions that happened there. The info plaque near the stones said the place was used to establish alliances, which hides the scene even further.

This is a highly interesting topic! I had not previously known about these masks, which surprised me, as I have been conducting my own research on the ancient Levant (from my armchair.) In any case, if these masks are 9,000 years old, then the Israelites could not have made them; they emerged much later, and this even pre-dates the Canaanites. This time frame is sometime around the founding of city of Jericho! It is more likely that the masks were perhaps made by the Natufian culture.

'This is the love that parents have for their children and grandchildren, and that energy never dissappears' I think that's one of the truest and most beautiful things I've ever heard. In my 4 decades on this earth I've never found anything that comes even close to the intensity of the love we have for our children. Even your first love will pale in comparison. Its easy to see how they came to have the beliefs they did. When a parent dies we tell the child the parent is always with them and watching over them, I personally believe that is true. My daughters Dad died when she was 3. Its not much different to imagine people praying to these deceased parents for protection and help.

While hunter-gatherers did some odd but also amazing art during the Paleolithic and Mesolithic, it's weird how complex agricultural societies in the Neolithic have such a disturbing feeling to them. Maybe living among graves, which nomadic people don’t do, made them ghoulish and obsessive. Good thing Bronze Age chariot riders dealt with that.

Just so we're all on the same page, making claims like "they appear to representations of older men," or, "were likely worn by shaman," is not a good idea when discussing artifacts from 9000+ years ago. In general, respected Archaeologists would shy away from such claims, because 9000+ years ago is so remote, we have no point of reference. Claims like that are pure speculation and should be framed as such.

I’m not sure which Roman historian wrote about Phoenician child sacrifice, but he reported witnessing one in Carthage. He said that the parents were forced to witness the ritual sacrifice of their child and weren’t allowed to cry. This didn’t always work out, so they fashioned stone/clay masks for the parents to hide behind. That was my first thought when I saw the masks. The Roman historian also described them as having diabolical grins and smiles. Imagine that being the last thing you see of your parents

Ok hold up, hear me out: Lock, Shock, and Barrel from The Nightmare Before Christmas all have masks that are extremely similar to these masks. Jack Skellington also bears a strong resemblance. The archetypal simplicity of his character design has broad appeal and he’s still a really popular character.

Why does everyone think everything from the past was a religious artifact? Could these masks simply be used in theater? Seems like big cities have entertainment now and probably back then.
