The Omega Seamaster 300M 3 Loves and 2 Hates: After 3 Years Away, Is It Time To Rebuy In 2023?

The Omega Seamaster 300M is relatively new in the grand scheme of dive watches without the long history of the Rolex Submariner or many other Seiko divers. Yet the Seamaster 300M has carved out a place of its own in history as the “James Bond Watch.” Ever since its introduction in 1995, it's been a popular choice amongst dive watch fans, and the latest version, released in 2018, has been the most popular yet. And with good reason.
I originally bought the new 42mm Seamaster 300M in 2018 and I fell in love right away. But for some reason i ended up selling it during a consolidation phase late 2019. But now I was able to spend time with it after 3 years away from it. Will it be everything I remember it being, or will it not live up to my idealized expectations?
In this video, I’m going to go over my 3 loves and 2 hates of this watch in an attempt to understand whether or not I should rebuy the Seamaster 300M after 3 years away from it. But for me rebuying a watch comes with its own set off issues that will require your help. Let me know down in the comments what you would do in my situation! (SMP300)

I did rebuy it! I had one in 2018 but end up going the Rolex way and sold it to get a sub no date. However, after 5 years and many watches later, I came to the conclusion that I really love the comfort and specs the smp300 offers and bought it again in 2022 (Black on rubber). I so much like this watch that I end up getting a second smp300 (blue and bracelet). It is always good the get a watch that sits well on the wrist and feels integrated to it. Nice video by the way!

Similar journey, have this black one on bracelet, then bought 114060 sub, always chose to wear this over the sub, so i sold the sub and still have this. Now I am deciding between buying the no date sub again, or the blue seamaster on rubber. 😂

Great video! Resonated with so many of your points. I always avoided the SMP300 because of the non tapering and grandpa style bracelet. I just bought this exact watch on rubber a couple weeks ago at the AD and it's taking up all my wrist time. Hands down the most comfortable watch I've ever worn. Never coming off the OEM rubber strap. It also makes it look much more sporty than on the steel. One thing to note is that while I would typically agree with you and advocate for a smaller 40 or 41mm diameter, this 42mm absolutely wears more like a 40mm; to the point where I feel a 40mm would be too small as it would wear like a 38mm. This is coming from someone with a 6.8" wrist. For the price, it can't be beaten. I considered the pelagos 39 but after comparing the dials, experiencing the comfort on the wrist, and looking at that gorgeous 8800 movement, it was a no brainer.

I would go further….this is the best looking dial of all watches on the market! This watch never gets boring! You just can‘t get enough of that watch! It‘s unbelieveble beautiful! I bought this watch in 4 different variations and I love them all! The full titanium No Time To Die, 60th anniversary Bond, the white dial and this black dial. First I thought one is enough an if I buy more variants, it‘s somehow the same and it‘s boring. Oh boy was I wrong! Omega just nailed it with thos watch. It‘s so perfect in every way! I will never ever sell one of my Seamasters!

A quick fix to your re-buy dilemma… instead of buying the ceramic SMP, find a Peter Blake ref. 2254-50. It wears smaller overall, including being noticeably thinner… has a tapered 1861 Speedy-style bracelet, has sword hands instead of the skeletonized versions and also harkens back to the older big triangle SM300 with the dial. IMO, the best modern SMP… and you can easily find a good one for $3k… especially from Japan. I’m telling you, the watch will blow your mind when you try one on. Just take a bit of time to find a good, unpolished example 🙂
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot Год назад
@CanadianWatchGuy a 2254 is super high up my list for the exact reason you laid out!! I’m actually open to getting the quartz version for extra utility and hopefully better options by it being less popular. I would have already bought one but the look of the ceramic dial on this new one keeps me pulled in but now that I think about it I think being able to see the ceramic sheen every once in a while will suffice! The japanese listings on chrono24 always keep me interested lol!
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot Год назад
@Pep Rex you make a very very good point that I haven't really thought of for some reason! I always worry whether the mechanical and cosmetic condition of some of the older 2254s but so long as I budget $500-800 for a full overhaul by omega at some point, it'll be pretty much a new watch for me!
@canadianwatchguy6768
@canadianwatchguy6768 Год назад
@@thewatchidiot as a heads-up, Omega still sells replacement bezels for the 2254 and they aren't too expensive ($200ish), so keep that in mind when searching.

@canadianwatchguy6768 Год назад
@@thewatchidiot Oh... and I now own both the White ceramic wave dial and a 2254 and they can completely coexist with one another... the way the cases wear complement one another really well in my rotation... the ceramic when I'm feeling like wearing something more tool-ish and substantial and the 2254 when I want something more low-key and with a bit of a Neo-vintage feel. I started with the ceramic wave, which really re-ignited my love of Omega. Now waiting on the delivery of the new manual-wind speedy '57... the love for Omega has sprung up as I've gotten sick of the whole Rolex waiting game.

I just love the bracelet in each and every aspect. It is the most comfortable that I ever had and the clasp and its function is fantastic. A tapered bracelet with such kind of clasp does not make sense. The solution could be perhaps that omega is offering two kind of bracelets. Than everyone would be happy. But I do not believe they will do this...

Another great discussion review TWI. I've seen many comments over the years disliking the waves and the 'tooth paste' cap HE valve, if I've bothered to comment my only suggestion is to see one in the flesh and try it on if you can. That's what I did and ended up getting my Greta White on the bracelet all those years ago. I love the waves and don't mind the HE valve as you can spot a Seamaster from across the room on someone else's wrist plus it's a conversation starter. I've got my Great White back now and it's on its another honeymoon moment. I just love it. At one point I was considering possibly part exchanging or selling it as it wasn't getting as much time on the wrist but I am so glad that I didn't. If at some point I'm thinking about moving on from a watch I'll put in in a drawer and set a calendar event 4 weeks or so in the future. When that alarm goes off I get the watch, set it and put it on the wrist, so far none have moved on. It's like an old friend popping over for a visit that you've not seen for a while.

I also have a 6.5” wrist and the watch only works if it’s on a rubber strap as far as OEM Omega straps are concerned. But I’ve always wanted this on a bracelet. The SMP300 really is an incredible watch that I've had my eye on for quite some time. I was thinking the blue dial but the gray look you showcased looks too good to pass on! Definitely a lot of food for thought and as for your dilemma I think it would be best to maybe see how much you lust after it in these coming months with it since you said that it's cooled off a bit after coming back from LA. But either way at least you have some sort of access to an SMP300!

At one point i was thinking of rebuying the blue version since it looks great and it would be something different but that gray shine/reflection of black ceramic is simply too good! Yeah I'm glad that I have some time away from the smp to make sure that i can try to get my head straight at least until i see my cousin again lol! I'm hoping that its enough to see the smp every once in a while bc it would be good for my wallet lol!

I have the blue dial and white dial. I love them both. I’ve heard others complain about the lack of taper on the bracelet but that never bothered me. But to each his/her own. I got them both on bracelets, but have since bought Omega straps with the deployment clasp. My problem with the strap with the tang type is that I have a large wrist, and it felt a bit snug. With the deployment clasp, it has a little extra room.

This was my first watch. In 2010 I think. One of the first Co-Axial versions of the watch. I love it. It was just serviced and it's like new. The bracelet is so nice, the dial is so pretty. It's pretty much a perfect watch, especially at the 40mm case size that it once was. Also, with regards to re-buy. I understand. I suppose though, life is too short for rules and regulations in a hobby. If you really love it, get it. Maybe get it pre-owned.

Great video! Absolutely nothing wrong with the rebuy when you completely regretted selling the watch out the first time. I had the Panerai 1312, sold it, totally regretted that sale immediately as I dropped it off and rebought it. It was like experiencing it for the first time all over again, and interestingly, the honeymoon on the rebuy lasted longer than the initial purchase. My insanity has had me rebuy the Seamaster multiple times in different iterations. The original quartz blue Bond which I regret selling the most. I had the black ceramic Seamaster, the White dial with black bezel, and now I bought the Sedna which is the same honeymoon I enjoyed with the Panerai. The bracelet used to be one of the most comfortable on the market. It had no sharp edges, it seemed to drape around the wrist, I think is with a little thinner. There was something so much more comfortable with that version. On the Ceramic, I had purchased the Speedmaster style bracelet for that which was great. The Sedna, I just went with rubber, also with deployant and it feels like it was made for my wrist. Keep up the fantastic work!!

Glad to hear that you're ready to buy one! It really is such an incredible watch so I'm sure you'll enjoy it immensely. I am not really that deep into the hobby as I have another expensive hobby and I can't have both. Plus my other hobby is also suffering from lack of budget. Having said that, the SMP300 is at the very top of my list. Since I am new I don't have experience re-buying so I would experience the SMP300 for the first time but I have tried it on at the Omega store and I fell absolutely in love with it and it's a watch I would keep forever. Plus to be honest, unless it's a Rolex I believe selling would always be at a loss so I would rather keep the watches I end up buying. Great review and let me help you not regret it too much... I've owned over a dozen iterations of the Seamaster and Planet Ocean over the past 15 years, and believe it or not, none of them have stayed in my collection due to the non-tapering multi-link bracelet design. I've even considered buying another one this weekend but I decided not to buy another one due to the age-old adage "fool me once... fool me over a dozen times" or something like that.

I have the full size Brosnan 2531.80. I think the 20mm wide bracelet is great. The softer edges on the older ones make it meld with watch head more naturally. 20mm is not to wide for a 41-42mm diameter watch. What annoys me about the bracelet is sizing it... for some reason the collars seem to stretch when I change them and I gotta mix and match to find some pins and collars that actually are going to hold the links together. Nice to have screws on the newer version... although if they are like my Planet ocean also pretty small and tricky and you gotta be really careful not to strip them.

Re-buy. You obviously really love it. I own three semesters. Two 300 M pro (blue with rose sedna gold on a blue rubber strap -- I call this the Omega bluesy -- and the Seaweed on green rubber strap. I also own the 1948 vintage Seamaster NYC boutique watch in 39 mm.) I love all three. Swap out the 300 Ms daily and wear the 48 boutique to nicer dress watch events. I love all three differently. I have four dogs. I love all four differently but in their own way. Buy it. Put your soul at ease.

I agree with your review on the Seamaster. They used to make the mid size which were great watches and would buy one of them. The new 42mm is ok just not for me. I have a 7” wrist and the watch would be best at 39-40mm.

I would buy it in a different color so it doesn't feel like you're buying the same exact watch, I tried on the Green Seamaster on rubber the other day and it was stunning so that would be my pick!

If you should rebuy a watch depends on why you sold it. You can feel nostalgia for a watch, rebuy it, and immediately regret it because you realize why you sold it before. If you had to sell it because you needed the cash, rebuying it when you're out of the financial hole again is perfectly legit.

Why would you buy a smaller version of this watch when you have a pretty big wrist and the 42mm looks perfect on you? A 40mm would look too small.

Don't!!!! I have also sold multiple watches over the years and even those taught me something about my my watch likes or dislikes,except for one particular piece. Two years ago I purchased a Tudor bb reverse panda and it is one of my favorite pieces. Yes , it is useful to have a 7.5" wrist. Anyway I then decided to part with my Tudor heritage red bezel 41 and was that a mistake. But I won't buy another 'maybe'? because that would be the beginning of a second rabbit hole 😮

I very much agree tha dilemma of re-buy... 1 of the reason I did not buy this SMP is that I had the pre-ceramic SMP and even though its a very much different watch but still buying this feels sort of like a re-buy to me. I was thinking of suggesting to you to get the green or white at least its not a totally same watch but it wouldn't have the colour changing from black to grey as shown in your video.

I might be an idiot but I have been rebuying the Seamaster Diver 300m after selling it, at least 5-6 times... Just can't live without it for longer periods of time, so every time I sell it to try something else, I end up regretting it and rebuying. Last time was yesterday, and this time it will be a keeper😜

I don't really sell so I haven't faced the rebuy dilemma. If you get it with the rubber strap then it would be a different experience and may stay long term. My experience has been that I enjoy divers a little more on rubber straps than bracelets. I'd go for it. Would you go for a different dial color?

Great video. I had the blue version for a few months but the dial colour changed to a dirty blue in certain light, bracelet was too sharp, no taper, weird end links, the clasp was comically too large, head and clasp were too thick, too heavy, pointless wart on the side that you cannot stop seeing, and the final straw was anti reflective coating on the outside of the Crystal which scratches. I returned mine and won’t be buying another one.

I've rebought certain models, not necessarily the exact same ones, multiple times. Either I didn't find THE most perfect version of it for myself previously, or, I just felt like I had my time with it and selling them would help fund other watches. In either of those 2 scenarios, I simply could have made a mistake in selling the watch(es). All I can say is this hobby is generally hard to make money with one watch sale to go onto the next. Unless SUPER profitable and popular and you can sell and come out with a profit, I fully expect to lose money on watches. If I can't accept that as the most common reality, I should get out of this hobby or stop rebuying watches. I know, not the smartest aooroach. Some buy with the head, some with the heart, some with both.. in general, I'm with the heart. That being said, whatever I get back, the difference from what I originally paid I simply consider that the total cost I paid to own for X amount of time.. which when I think about it isn't that bad.. compared to if I think about it the other way as I lost X amount of money on this watch. The glass is half full versus the glass is half empty perspective/mentality. As for your case, only u can decide if the rebuy is worth it. Some urges and wants u may simply have to scratch. If u want to minimize the investment this time around, I guess take the time to look for an excellent pre-owned example at best pre-owned price. Hopefully, it may come close to what u had sold it before, if not less, then it's like you never sold it. Lastly, is this a watch you can say I had your time with and that's fine and can appreciate it from afar?.. does not need to be in your possession for keeps? On certain rebuys, it did take me x times to realize this particular watch just isn't what I REALLY want and never revisit it after making that revelation.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot Год назад
We're alike bc i too think that the money that is "lost" when selling a watch is simply the cost of usage! The same thing goes for cars although the stakes are quite different lol! And yeah being able to appreciate watches from afar is a lesson that i learnt the hard way in 2018 when i simply bought far too many watches bc i liked them. After not wearing most of them i ended up selling them but I learned a bunch from all those watches! I guess I will have to see how much i yearn for it during my cooling off period and hopefully (for the sake of my wallet lol) its a case of seeing and wearing my cousins SMP300 is enough for me!

I have never sold a watch because every single one is intended as a permanent member in my collection. I hate the idea of making money and flipping. I don't even bother with it. So every single one I buy, stays. If one ever got stolen and I had the money, I would repurchase them. No doubt in my mind. Although, I do take a looong time to think about what to buy next.

It's true many judge solely on wrist size. The best way is to look in a full length mirror and see it in proportion to your body type as well. Some have slim wrists but wide bodies.
