Great video... I've been eyeing this lens for a while. I do mostly video work and one thing you forgot to mention is the clear image zoom function in 4k, which gives this lens a reach of 405mm equivalent! :)

The intro video was shot in S-LOG-2, color graded in Davinci Resolve. I am pretty sure I used Sony's Slog 2 lut as a base.

Great job on the video Malcolm! Thanks for making it. I just got the 15mm F1.4, and I think that it complements my 18-135 quite well. Now I have a lens for low-light video work, and a good option for walking around taking my beloved landscape pictures with the option to do macro work as well. I bet Sony will come out with a new version of the APS-C G-series power zoom lens this year that has a fixed F4.0 and internal zoom but no OSS. Retail it for $999 and it would sell like crazy.

Nicely done! For hand held video do you feel the optical stabilization works well enough not to need a gimbal if used with say the 6600. Not so much for vlogging purposes, but hand-held scenery shots or along trail?

Yes it works well. ON the A6400 without IBIS, I still did notice a lot of movement at times. I would recommend using a neck strap held tight around your neck and hold the camera out with your arms along with the stabilization to get smooth results.

After watching dozens or hundreds of reviews, now I am building my first kit with this lens. A6100 body and 18-135 from a used market is an excellent combo for a fair price. A get a6100 for about $590 and 18-135 for about $330. And I saw it kited with a6000 for about $610

You're right about the macro abilities. I have found that this lens performs better than my Sigma 30 f2.8 for still subjects in low light because of the OSS. However, I am disappointed that it does not have any weather resistance. It would have been a good travel lens combo with some of the weather sealed A6X00 bodies.

I agree about the weather sealing and wish it had the flange gasket on the mount, but I have had it in blowing sand without issue other then I just had to blow the surface sand out when I got home. Nothing seemed to obstruct any movement of the body or rings.

camera on tripode setup. Are you able to zoom in the subject with the Sony remote phone app ? and how is the image stabilisation ?

This lens is not power zoom so you can not zoom the actual lens with the app. However the camera has the feature clear image zoom which allows you to zoom into the image digitally. This is good in video applications keeping the resolution within the video resolution settings. Pictures can be done in post production so I never used it for photos. Image stabilization is very good with this lens. I was always happy with it while I owned it.

Hi, I just bought this lens but it's not really silent when I zoom in (I can easily hear it when I record a video with it). Do you also have this problem or is it just me and it seems to be a manufacturing problem? Could it be the sound of the variable aperture ?

I have never noticed any noise other then the barrel movement, I am not sure if the variable aperture would be moving or not, you should be able to watch the iris in the lens to see if it actually is adjusting,

I use this lens on the Sony A6500 often. Have you had any trouble using this lens with the DJI rsc2? Noticed it in the background. Hoping to use this setup when it comes in

Yes I do use it without any problems. I balance in the middle of the zoom range and it works. Most of the beginning shots in the back alley were shot using the lens and fumble.

Sorry for the late reply, somehow I never saw this come though. Too late to answer, but to answer your question, It does okay, it would be better if it was a 2.8 lens for low light, however the A6400 and newer APS-C cameras have great low light performance when shooting 4k, so it will get the job done and you can get good results with it.

sony 18-135 mm lens has full time manual focus?

It is still electronic focus by wire, but it has a dedicated switch that selects Manual Focus or Auto Focus like Sony's other lenses. So that switch selection is priority over what the camera setting is. But it is no different then having it in auto focus and then setting the camera to MF.

Sorry for the late reply and and an answer may not be helpful at this time, but for anyone else with this question. The 18-105 lens would be better suited for video work. It is a heavier lens, but it offers a consent f4 and power zoom. If photo is your main purpose I would choose the 18-135, more reach, much smaller and lighter then the 18-105. And slightly faster at f3.5 on the wide end.

This lens gives you much more reach then the sigma, It will really come down to your needs, If you don't need the reach, the sigma would be a great choice.
