When you shoot a lot of corporate headshots on location, you don't always have the space you need to use the kind of lighting setups you might use in your camera room. For times when space has been an issue, I have developed some techniques for creating good professional headshots with only one light and a reflector or two.
This video includes a short sales pitch for a product that I sell in my store, the link is below
Here is a link to my Team Headshot Trifold I talked about in the video:

Picked up the AD200pro about a month ago with a good sized softbox and a nice stand. I can't believe how much I love this flash! Very exciting to see that I could potentially create professional headshots with this kind of gear. Your videos are excellent!

I ran my studio on just AD200s for about a year. You might have to shoot at ISO 200 or 400 here and there if you want F11 but they work well. The AD400 goes on sale regularly and is a really great addition as well

I appreciate the insight to your process, Gary. I've been considering the purchase of an arc-style reflector for fill, so it's good to know the silver surface "makes people look like a nightmare," and I might need a school bus if I ever want to transport it. LOL!

The Kupo bracket thingy looks great. I currently clamp a Manfrotto Nano stand and 90degrees to use as a boom arm. It works great but can be a bit ungainly. The weight of the legs act as a counterweight and I can comfortably boom out to about 24inches before it gets wobbly, which is fine, but it's not the cleanest of methods. I might have to get one of those brackets.
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 4 года назад
The Kupo mini arm has been a huge help in the studio. I also use an Avenger boom so it gives me flexibility to do more while taking up a ton less space. Thank you for watching :)

Hey Gary, always great info...a tutorial on how to light a face based on its features would be awesome...as in what are you looking at and then light from certain direction and why not the other direction etc. modifier choice etc based on facial features. Maybe you already have it idk.

Gary, another great video. Not only do I learn something I get entertained too. I do like that reflector with the rods. I'll check out the Glow version. Thanks!!! Do you try to take headshots of your kids? I'll bet that can be a challenge. When our kid was little it was always a challenge to get a picture. LOL

i tried this last weekend but when I was positioning the light I had one side bright but other side you can see the shadows. Just getting started. Had magmod 42 with 2 ad200. Nikon z6 85 aperture 5.6 shutter 1/200 iso 100. I forgot you said to feather the light. I wish I could share my first capture with you

I see a lot of changes compared to your Creative Live lesson about headshots. Capture One now, which is way better than Light Room. I switched couple of years ago. You are shooting horizontal opposed to vertical. Is the client asking for that or is that your new format for headshots? Most important, you aren't doing the,than that turn three-quarter cut through one of the shoulders old school Bar Association? LOL
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 4 года назад
In the 5 years since CL, I definitely have added some things and changed some things. I still do loads of vertical headshots, and I still shoot a great many portraits from a 2/3 view. Good thing there are so many ways to approach photography, right?
@marcomark8
@marcomark8 4 года назад
@@GaryHughesOfficial But the headshot's that trending right know is more of the straight to camera horizontal?
@marcomark8
@marcomark8 4 года назад
I photographed weddings for years with film and I am researching to do headshots with my Sony A7III. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Would like to see you doing a session in Chicago in August 2021 at the photo convention called. ClickCon. I meet Peter Hurley there and saw one of his sessions. I was practicing your lighting technics from the CL session yesterday. Especially with the one to 3 light set ups, lIke the 7' umbrella. Thank you, Mark
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 4 года назад
I don’t think that horizontal headshots are trending, I think that, in many cases, they are more useful. Leaving room around the image for design purposes is advantageous for everything from social media to brochures. I still, however, shoot most of my actor and model images vertical. Hope that helps :)
@marcomark8
@marcomark8 4 года назад
@@GaryHughesOfficial Thank you for all that information. It definitely helps without a doubt.

I love the Glow items. I just changed out my key light to a 40 inch parabolic godox and the sweet spot is pretty small. Are you still using the Glow on location feathered? I recently watched your new eyelighter review. WIth it being quicker would you start bringing that onsite?
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial Год назад
I keep the Eyelighter 3 in my go bag for location and the Glow stays at the studio :)
@marcomark8
@marcomark8 4 года назад
Gary, for most of your headshots, do you still shoot with that 5' umbrella convertible or are you using the EZ glow 38" para for most of your work? And is your 5' umbrella silver, white or white satin inside?
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 4 года назад
I use both. The EZ lock is mostly for location work, in the studio I use umbrellas. Inside is white

I just order the glow arc light it be here tomorrow. So its best to use the white side. Does it matter what skin tone your client is? Also your template you made i notice you said you use whcc so do I. What option is that under to get those printed?
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 2 года назад
I almost always use the white, works well on all skin tones. You can always warm up in post if you need to, faster than changing the fabric, lol. I use the 5x5 trifold ordering through ROES.

Clarifying the comment at 18:05 about the forehead being a hotspot, you metered the forehead at 5.6, moved the light back, and set you aperture to f/8. Can you explain that process and what you did? Wouldn't giving a bit of distance make the light weaker and thus a larger aperture or the same be appropriate? Thank you!
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 3 года назад
I see what happened, I said “5.6-9” which means 5.6 and 9/10ths which is just slightly less than F8. A tenth of a stop is close enough for most things like this, I should have been more clear but live is live I guess. Thanks for watching!
@rockj8197
@rockj8197 3 года назад
@@GaryHughesOfficial Thank you for the clarification. So you left the apperture at what you metered, basically, and moved the light back a touch to even out the light across the face. Thus, no nuclear forehead. Worked great. Thanks again!
