The One Major Advantage Clone Troopers Have Over Non Clones

The average clone trooper required around nine years of growth and training before they were ready for the battlefield. This was a very resource and time intensive process that made the Clone Trooper prohibitively expensive. But all that training does gives these clones one major advantage...

The training for the clones reminds me of the spartan 2 program. Where children age 5-6 are recruited and trained both physically and with various education subjects including war games, tactics, and strategy along with math, physics, and technology. At age 12 pre augmentation the children matched against a UNSC Marine Corps company, Tango Company, in a simulated war game of capture the flag. Even after cheating and abusing the captured prisoners, a company of around 120-200 soldiers was defeated by at least 75 children with 6 years of military training.

Very good points about the advantages of clone troopers over standard trained soldiers - there's just one problem I see. BX-series Commando Droids can do all of that as well, and more. So can IG-100 Magnaguards. They cost far more to produce than B1 or B2 battle droids, yes - but I'd be willing to bet the price would still be far, far less than feeding, housing, training, and equipping a single clone trooper for 9 years. Not to mention they'd be individually ready far, far faster than 9 years. And as callous as your public may be to the morality of clone soldiers, they'd still care more for clones than for the "life" and limb of battle droid casualties. So if you want an army of superbly trained and capable "swiss army knife" operators, high-end battle droids are still the much better option.

Why the Kamino cloners didn't reverse the age degradation problem of the clones. Being that perfectionists is a great flaw. And the clone fighting years are so many few than those of a normal person. In a long war, like 20 or 30 years, the will be useless.
@tk-6967
@tk-6967 Месяц назад
And they didn't actually do what Gen Tech said, making this so-called 'perfect army' even less perfect. Clone pilots, gunners and other specialised roles, even something seemingly more basic like 'heavy troopers', 'engineers' and 'snipers' were all specially trained clones. Regular clones were either not at all trained on how to do these things, or had very little training. This became a huge issue for the Republic when they had a pilot shortage midway through the war. The Republic had to use Spaarti cloning to compensate for lack of numbers, training became of even lesser quality until the Spaarti clones made stormtroopers from SW Rebels look competent. Needless to say, a lot of this was also the fault of Mace Windu and the Jedi strike team on Geonosis for doing that dumb rescue attempt, which not only saw almost 200 of the finest Jedi warriors killed (the arena battle only), but also saw the death of the clone donor himself, Jango Fett. This was a huge blow to the Republic.
@GGBlaster
@GGBlaster Месяц назад
Honestly, I think the whole quantity vs quality debate is an issue in Star Wars’ canon (we love you George, but this was an oops). Clones should baseline be operating at the skill level of commandos to even begin to make up for their quantitative disadvantage against the droid army. That clone commander from the 2003 series, who was calling for reinforcements and then began just mowing down super battle droids? That should be clones on a regular basis.
@IsaacVizasLurie
@IsaacVizasLurie Месяц назад
They are though. If you take pre Disney media most stormtroopers have better aim than U.S Marines IRL when they're not being told to miss like in ANH. By contrast clones and yes, b1s are freakishly good shots. The average reg in TCW can knock over B2s with ease, send 600 pound dwarf spider droids flying with a kick, melee a group of trandoshands, and wrestle commando droids to the floor before ripping their limbs off. They're literally stated in canon and legends materials to be improvements on Fett in terms of their strength and durability from genetic enhancement. How that works and how much they're enhanced varies but they're still stronger, faster and more durable than Jango Fett could ever be. The reason we see clones as 'weak' is because they are from the perspective of force users and cyborg super weapons like grievous. Or against battle droids they're outnumbered 100 to 1. To a natborn of any species weaker than a Wookie a clone trooper would be terrifying. To a small battalion (100-200 individuals) of Stormtroopers, Rebels, Planetary Militiamen, etc Five Clones would be a major threat.
@GGBlaster
@GGBlaster Месяц назад
@@IsaacVizasLurie The reason we see clones as weak is because they are still treated as cannon fodder in the Clone Wars. When I say clones should be operating at commando level, I’m saying that Clone Troopers in Star Wars should be on par with what we’ve seen of Clone Commandos. With only a few million clones to wage a Galaxy-wide war, especially against trillions of droids, one clone basically needs to be a one-man army. Sure, I’ll accept that the whole war was staged, but then why didn’t anyone stop and ask “Hey, we’re supposed to be outnumbered a million to one; why didn’t we lose in the first week of the war?” I love Star Wars, don’t get me wrong, but scale has always been an issue in the universe’s design.

@@Expressmusic457 one thing to note, most of the jedi did not have much understanding of military service, most republic officers are only slightly better. So from the very start every cline was being misused and improperly led which obviously made a lot of problems through the war. If the jedi were smart they would have sent detachments to every world to train local militas in everything they need to know to hold their world while reinforcements responds but little of that happened. For some reason the jedi never thought that far or were rarely proactive in situations. The Training they have is not in rambo style badassery but basically being tought nearly every occupation needed for a functional army, the kaminoans did not even know wether or not the clones will need to be self sustaining as in there are normal humans doing the logistics side so they covered everything. They can function as a police force because they had training in de escalating a situation, they can maintain and repair equipment on the field and everyone knows how to conduct inventory and requisition equipment and the list goes on. Fighting is actually 10 percent of the military, the rest is each and every clone either knows or is fairly familiar of and can participate. Arcs and clone commandos on the other skipped those extra occupational instructions and focused on what directly impacts their mission objectives, so they probably don't learn about working on a starship or starfighter or know how to do field surgery but in exchange they got more time into tactical operations training instead. The commandos in particular had very specific teachers who taught them what they felt is the most important of being in this occupation.

Now, that's a great thumbnail. 👌🏻 Commander Cody describes the clones best: Cody, Imperial Battalion Commander, Operational Log [excerpt]: "Since the Empire has redirected the clone trooper program to other pursuits and stepped up recruiting inferior humans from the Outer Rim, the operational effectiveness of this army has declined significantly. The stormtroopers in my own battalion are expendable buffoons. They have neither common sense nor sense of their own surroundings. Just today, I witnessed a new recruit hit his head on a blast door during maneuvers. Blasted idiots! What a disgrace to the heritage and legacy of a once truly incredible fighting force. As one of the last clones in service today, few others can share in my disdain for these men. I'd sacrifice an entire platoon of new stormtrooper recruits for just one real clone trooper. If the clone template were still alive, I think he'd kill them all himself."

6:32 Well no, they aren't. Clone pilots, walker pilots and all of these other specialised troops are just that - specialised. Yes, clone troopers *should* have been trained to pilot ships and use walkers, but we know for a fact that they generally speaking weren't. Battlefront 2 for example mentions that the Republic navy had a major pilot shortage, which resulted in standard clones having to use flight simulators whenever they could. We know that clone pilots were picked out when they were in their youth based on tests conducted. Regular clones hadn't been trained to fly, use walkers, etc. Heck, even roles like 'engineer', 'heavy' and 'sniper' were not roles that average troopers had been trained to fill despite having so many years of training, for some reason, the Kaminoans again gave those roles to specific troopers they had picked out. Of course, a lot of this stuff ended up being scrapped during the war, but the damage had largely been done.

Now, I wonder if First Order troopers had an edge over their Imperial stormtooper and Republic Clone trooper counterparts. Imperial stormtrooper ranks were comprised of people with varying starting point origins regarding military exposure and training. Not everyone was privileged enough to enter into an academy at a younger age, which meant either having way less time to prepare for graduation compared to others, or the standards were lowered; especially for late-Empire era conscripts. First Order trooper origins are kidnapped children having military life forced upon them from a young age. Since genetically modified aging didn’t speed up their time like their clone counterparts, their upbringings must’ve allowed for more skill sets to learn and perfect before reaching young adulthood. While not necessarily bred for war from birth, First Order troopers were far from conscripts and either sit with or just below Clones, imo. If Fett Clone ranks weren’t so hurriedly formed through age modification and perhaps underwent what First Order troopers had (I imagine they used similar training methods compared to Kamino’s, just less rushed) the bar would be set even higher. Heck, that could probably explain the Sith Troopers from Exegol.

In my opinion, it wasn't necessarily the quality of the clones by themselves. If you have the best artillery gun in the world, but it gets into close range combat, it doesn't matter how good the artillery piece is. It's just the wrong tool for the job. The clones were not the best pilots, nor the best infantry or tankers by default. They could become the best anything with enough training and time, but their real strength was their adaptability. They were good in all areas, excellent in their personal specialization, and this meant they could adjust their plans on the fly in a way that battle droids struggled to. Further, their experiences could then be incorporated into a larger understanding of the war effort and why certain decisions were made. If your soldiers understand the general operational objectives, then they can take advantage of opportunities that further those objectives even without orders to do so. This is something the US Army used to great effect in the Second World War. By involving NCO's in the planning of large missions, they understood the mission goals, concerns and would seize opportunities accordingly.

I’m an emergency situation, as far as I understand, for US Marine Corps boot camp, the fluff they’d be cutting out is generally just history related information, and they’d just accelerate the training process, so a lot more PT with MCMAP mixed in, to get the basic qualifications knocked out as fast as possible, rifle qualification as soon as the recruits can be thrown on to a range, land nav (which includes how to read maps and identify features), a lot of boot camp was history, you could probably knock out a month from boot camp on history alone, they’d still do drill because that is imperative for learning how to understand and execute orders quickly. Another thing they’d probably take away as I recall would be hours, you’d be sleeping a lot less because you’d be training later into the night, less time to eat, shorter time at church, cut the fat where you can kind of thing, less time for writing letters and what have you (at the end of every night we’d get an hour called square away time) they’d probably knock that down to like 15-30 minutes, squeeze that to get even more training time

Nah, he is wrong. Clones *should have been* trained like he said, but the lore makes it very clear that they weren't. Clone pilots were specifically chosen when they were young for specific test results, and then trained separately. The Republic ran into a shortage of pilots midway through the war, so regular troops were forced to train in basic simulators only at that time.

A HUGE flaw in oversite, to me anyways, was this MASSIVE an very expensive to set up, use an maintain system was set up to have only so much effective shelf life an effectively as a whole depending on also how well they can ALSO be trained an equipped too. If anything, they shoulda been engineered to either STOP aging on reachin adult age OR a plan to give them a treatment(s) to stop or very much slow their agin to give them something of a proper life while a very small childhood. The war, woulda handled any PC issues as to them being an excessive amount of Clone surviving Vets after the war. An on top that a very elite but also very expensive to make, train an equip force you want to be able to keep around awhile. Especially when for all you know they might be needed indefinitely since constant refilling the ranks was only problematic if you werent constantly growing fresh reserves of troops to fall under survivng veterans an replace those lost for various reasons.. never much cared for oversights like that which made huge differences

Clone troopers are described, said, and stated to be the best soldiers of all time. They were only a couple million of them compared to the 100 billions of the CIS's droids. Single clones could take out billions of battle droids. But on screen a clone Trooper would take out 3-5 droids before he died. The clones were shown to be way weaker Than they are described. The republic should've lost all their clones fairly quickly. But for whatever reason the clones on screen aren't that OP, and the one mentioned in writting are better than jedi masters. It's a quirk I in the plot That I noticed

You guys ever think how weird the earliest stages of clone training must have been? Like they have to learn how to walk and read first and only then you can begin a proper training. Then imagine a company of toddlers learning how to march in formation while still shitting their diapers. Or kids watching videos about finding cover under fire before they can even walk. Also being raised mostly by those dolphin psychopats and with no one taking proper care of them the fact that the clones are decent guys rather than power and violence obsessed mofos is the most unrealistic thing about thier training. You think Kaminoans used to put them in solitary for crying?

I figured that's why the Republic Navy was able to hold its own against the CIS despite being so heavily outnumbered in the beginning. Having Venators and Accumulators with entire clone crews and full squadrons of clone fighter pilots. Sure you can build a massive automated methodical navy with pre-programmed battle drills; but its going to get wrecked by a naval force which has trained for years most likely knowing what those pre-programmed battle drills are is more flexible being imaginative and better to respond and counter attack. On top of that its amplified by the command assistance of experienced veteran naval officers from across the Republic and can follow the lead of space wizards into battle.
@tk-6967
@tk-6967 Месяц назад
No. The reason is simple, the war was rigged, thus the droids were also rigged. The Republic navy was complete shit, and the Republic was losing the war despite the poor tactics of droid forces and the loss of many important CIS organic commanders. The Kaminoans hadn't trained nearly enough clone pilots, and they simply couldn't handle the droid fighters. This forced the Republic to send more and more regular troops into starfighter duty.
@ImNtDead
@ImNtDead Месяц назад
@@tk-6967 well every Star Wars fan knows that the whole thing was rigged; but it's not that simple. Palpatine knew he needed a special force of adaptable military personnel to keep up with the Jedi. And no it wasn't complete shit. It perfect and what was needed to encourage the Jedi to commit to wreckless tactics and the more wreckless they got the greater the chances they would get themselves killed. Many clone troops were pulled off the battlefield and put into the cockpit because the clones were far superior to the droids. Basic droid combat programming was shit to begin with and all you have to do is watch the Phantom Menace to know that. At the start of the war it was extremely rough for the clones and the Republic but after the outer rim siege campaigns it was turning around swinging things in the Republic and the Jedi. The clones were exactly as I described and they did great despite being so heavily outnumbered.
@tk-6967
@tk-6967 Месяц назад
@@ImNtDead The Outer Rim Sieges were towards the end of the war, and most sources make it entirely clear that the CIS could have won at any point had they been trying, to the point that even the most ardent Palpatine supporters couldn't deny how weird the CIS tactics at the battle of Coruscant were. TPM shows that the droids were relatively competent. What it does show is that the Gungans, despite being primitive and isolationist, were formidable, and it shows that the droids were only beaten because of the Chosen One, or rather plot convenience. No, the clones weren't 'put in cockpits' because they were effective, the Republic was desperate because the droid navy was simply superior in every way to the Republics. They better ships, better starfighters, etc. and were only held back by Palpatine and co. sabotaging them.
@ImNtDead
@ImNtDead Месяц назад
@@tk-6967 oh sorry I'm not talking about the fight between the gungans and the battle droids I'm talking about when the Naboo Royal Fighter Corp went up after the control ship that had a thousand vulture droids. The vulture droids are entirely reliant on numbers. And I'm not saying the clone troopers were put in the cockpit because they were great at it, it's because they were capable of being put into that role. The clones were the superior force being more flexible and innovative in coming up with new tactics prior to and during battle. Palpatine needed them to be that. He didn't just need a force that could execute the Jedi the moment he gave the order he needed a force that can stand against extreme odds and they needed to be able to do that both on the ground and in space. While it is suggested that the CIS could just overrun the Republic with their numbers its mostly not that simple. After all Dooku needs to play his part as the head of the CIS which saw themselves as planets who were just trying to be free of the Republic. They probably expected Dooku to wage a mostly defensive war for independence. In the Clone Wars cartoon we don't get to see a lot of the politics that take place with in the CIS like we do the Republic; but I imagine Dooku was doing the same thing as Palpatine consolidating power under his control.
@tk-6967
@tk-6967 Месяц назад
@ImNtDead The Naboo pilots were well trained in starfighter combat. That is a key difference between them and foot clones. No, clone creativity had nothing to do with why Palpatine picked them. If he cared about sheer effectiveness, he would have used a non-human donor or just went with droids, but neither of those were politically viable. Fett was chosen by chance ultimately. Besides, the reason the clones killed the Jedi never boiled down to their 'creativity', it was because the Jedi didn't expect it and couldn't fight their overwhelming firepower. Not only that, but the Jedi had already been severely weakened by the war and were spread out thin. It wasn't that difficult for the clones to eliminate them.

The video kind of just lied btw. regular clones weren't trained to do anything but fight as foot troops. Yes, the Kaminoans should have done what Gen Tech said, but they didn't, and this was even brought up in Battlefront 2 when the clone narrator mentions that the Republic was short on pilots and many foot troops had to start learning in flight simulators in their free time so that they could get into starfighters. We also know from source books that the original clone pilots were picked from when they were young to train in their role, it was not standard issue training
