AC Rogue is by many accounts, including mine, an underwhelming game. However, there are many things it does right that I think Ubisoft could learn from. Let's explore one of those things.

While Rogue didn't explore the ideas of the Assassins and Templars, I do like how it explored Shay's inner conflict with hunting down his old friends and joining the Templars. It's still a shame Unity's story didn't involve Arno looking into his father's murder.
@dainpiagne4636

completely agree, i personally think shay's voice acting (not just the english one) could have been more emotional and hurt in the various scenes, since it felt quite restrained to me when it mattered but when looting or finding collectibles randomly too happy, and the cutscenes' pacing was sometimes horreondous (ac3 has the same problem), but the dilemma with his past friends was great and the game is still very good. Another sad point of people undervaluing rogue is that they won't notice its wonderful ost, among the best ones 🥲
@connorwiederich
@connorwiederich 3 месяца назад
@@dainpiagne4636I was going to mention Rogue's soundtrack being great as well. I listen to it a lot alongside AC 2's OST. Thing is a lot of players talk about how the later games in the series reuse Ezio's Family for their main soundtracks. Also RU-vidr Master Assassin did bring up a good point on how this game has good mission structures.
@dainpiagne4636
@dainpiagne4636 3 месяца назад
@@connorwiederich they do reuse it, but i find it badass and a good decision. To have a track be so powerful that it becomes the main theme, a part of the series' identity that fans can recognize and connect to, and the fact that it's still called ezio's family and credited to ezio is all very empowering and a great homage imo. I can't imagine someone listening to origins' version and complaining about it tbh

@@godzillazfriction Rogue could have looked into the flaws of freedom without order and killing for it and how having order helps society, kind of like how Haytham told Connor in AC 3 about freedom leading to chaos. Or exploring the views of the Templars like Altair had with his 9 targets in AC.

It's why I love the Kenway Saga, I just love how much detail there is and when it all fits together like a puzzle it's insanely satisfying. You have to think, there's AC 3, Liberation, Black Flag, Freedom Cry, Rogue and Unity all taking place in slightly different periods of time, all within about 75 years of history.

@@TheSpaniardAssassinis your videos and standings always this generic and one-noted with no critical/analytical thinking being delved in for something such as AC: Rogue where this 'criticism' about the 'AsSaSsInS AcT lIkE TeMPlaRs' and 'TeMpARrS aCt LiKe AsSaSsInS' or 'ShAy iS jUsT aNoOtHer ASsAsSiN wItH dIfFErNT RoBes' when switching to the Templars... 1st off, if you really want to be technical or metaphorical, the Assassin's and the Templars are one in the same which is specified from the Title screen of Rogue but... 2nd, this criticism doesn't hold any validation considering that in Rogue, the Assassin's have a valid reason for putting up flags like the Creed always did since the 1st game however, since they were winning against the Templars/British, they were striving for a desperate attempt to any means of going against the Templars, but funnily enough that'd be the downfall of them eventually... 3rd, Shay isn't supposed to be a 'typical Templar' that doesn't get his hands dirty through and through even though both Assassin's and Templars have similar but different in mannerisms in terms of roles in which Shay became an Assassin Hunter for the Templars for a time until he fully joined the Templars, to which he was abiding several roles in the 7 year war but primarily being an Assassin Hunter through and through, which was to the Colonial Templars benefit against the Colonial Assassin's and the French... 4th, don't bring in 'morality' as a total valid concept in an era where 'morality' wasn't a thing and still isn't a thing in actuality - "morality" is an abstract that's stemmed from an idea to give 'meaning' against the haphazardly on what the basis level of Good and Evil offers, despite that it isn't the case because of how "morality" as a concept is paradoxical by or against nature... there's no measures to deter a set of principles between Good and Evil for you to be deemed as 'moral' since the contradiction plays at hand with the concept of 'immoral' that's stemmed from 'moral' but it plays contradictory connotations with the concept of 'moral' by acknowledging the alignment and principles through Good and Evil, and Immoral is deemed to differentiate those who apparently don't set the standards of what's 'moral' which for some reason alludes to 'Good'... Amoral on the other hand, is the contradictory opposite to what 'moral' is and is instead generalised through the notion of not caring or dwelling or not grasping on the notion of what's 'right and wrong' - which the definition plays a hand of it being deemed 'different' despite 'morality' having the same or connotating paradoxical play... 5th, the Templars aren't 'Good natured for the sake of it' since AC3, it's been established that the Colonial Templars weren't an ordinary group of Templars which was thanks to Haytham Kenway for transpiring the Templar cause in his own way that he still strived for even after discovering who offed his Father, but as AC3 came to establish itself, the Templars aren't as 'Good natured' as it seems in Rogue... tbh, i cant be bothered elaborating further than this but if you actually want more information then about the Greyness of Rogue then i recommend searching up a video called "Assassin's Creed Brogue: A Video Analysis of Shay Cormac"...

@@godzillazfriction Your comment doesn't seem to even mention what the video is talking about bruh, just comes off as angry and hard to understand. I mean you talk about morality not being a valid concept, but it definitely is. Morality was a thing, even in the 1700s, and objectively it is now. Whether you personally think it exists doesn't change the fact that it matters to most people, including the characters in the plot. Also Haytham wasn't really that great of a Templar. He did a lot but his mistakes arguably put shame to any of that. Even Otso Berg says this, how Templars are supposed to kill for efficiency. But Haytham learnt about his own Grandmaster being the killer of his father and decided to take revenge and kill Birch. Afterwards he still acted emotionally, and the worst part was letting Connor kill him and destroy the Colonial Rite, and help America gain independence.

I think Kassandra being immortal could have worked if they had thought it up beforehand and she appeared in a few games before as maybe a one-sequence character. Her showing up in these different time periods would have intrigued us to the point that when Odyssey was revealed, we would have been like "HOLY SHIT! IT'S HER! We're finally getting her story! Even if the game is set before the Assassins, it's still relevant!" Also think it would have been more intriguing if she didn't show up to die at the end of Odyssey's modern day. I would have liked it more if we were kept in the dark about whether she was still alive, or passed the staff on at some unknown point. Valhalla/Mirage could have lowkey been about Basim/Loki trying to manipulate Layla from "The Grey" to find out who the staff was eventually passed to, so it could be stolen in the modern day to revive him.

Quebec was meant to be in the game, was cut due to production issues. There was also a 3 year gap planned before Shay ended up joining the Templars. AC Rogue is my favorite Assassin’s creed game, but I won’t say it’s the best. Moreover, it gave me a lot of what I want from a game like Black flag (which is good in its own right). I felt like an agent for the British, destabilizing french supply lines and with all the naval battles, I felt like a British naval officer as well. It’s a satisfying game to play in my opinion

What funny timing, I literally just left a comment on one of your other videos that involved me talking about Shay! But besides that, I’m really happy to see you talking about rogue! As much as I love Shay as he stands now, he could have been such a better character had time and Ubisoft management allowed. I do adore how he is set up though, as an assassin who no one really has any faith in sent off on a dangerous mission (the Lisbon segment is such a great set piece and segment)due to his expandability and when he returns after directly causing the death of thousands (albeit under another persons orders and not knowing of what would occur) he reaches a breaking point in which he would rather die than let such a thing ever happen again, so he jumps. But instead of dying like he expected he is saved and by the assassin’s enemies no less. They support him and allow him to work for their trust, but even when he does become a Templar (and even as an assassin) he doesn’t strictly adhere to their creed like the rest. He instead chooses to follow his own morals and code, as someone who had seen both sides of the coin (although in this game Ubisoft did horribly in showing the nuisances of either side and just made the assassins the bad guys and the templars the good guys) and with a strong conviction after what he has experienced he is able to give the player and story such an interesting and refreshing perspective. (Also on a side note, I love the gang stalker mechanic it really makes you feel like the world is trying to get you and that you’re truly being hunted down). And just as you pointed out in the video, the tie-ins with the kenway saga (and the decent amount of screen time we get with Haytham!) and unity are a brilliant decision. I don’t really think I can add much to that facet more than you already have. Overall while Rogue (like every other AC game) has a wealth of missed potential, I’m still happy with the ideas and foundations it put forth through Shay’s story.

The thing that bothers me the most is that Shay joins the Templars … if you disagree with the assassins playing god don’t join the other faction just because … be an actual rogue your ideology is the proper assassin ideology … he should be on his own fighting both Templars and the corrupt assassins

I remember when AC Revelations came out, they released the game including Assassin's Creed 1 in the pack at the price of one game only. I think that this was the perfect way to deal with a sequel, because AC1 was old enough to be offered to gamers, Assassin's creed Revelations was a small game so they link two short game in one. I think now it is difficult to try something like that, but I also think that if Ubisoft released a Bundle, maybe a new game in ancient Rome with Assassin's creed Origins included in at the price of Deluxe Edition instead of a useless Deluxe Edition, would be better and could solve the problem of playing an older game to understand a sequel. It would be perfect to create a sequel to Bayek or Aya, maybe a smaller game in only one city (Rome) and offer inside as a deluxe Origins that is an amazing 55h experience.

For me, AC Rogue is Ubisoft's miss-opportunity to explore the perspective and experience of the Templars in carrying out their goals, These are my personal 'miss-opportunities', - Maybe, we can be shown and experienced how Templars operate in the field through mechanics that are 'very Templar centric', just like Assassins with eavesdroping or scouting. - Maybe, we can defend or even develop relationships that will be built with the templars order themselves when the assassin who is 'on duty' to tear down orders one by one. Yeah, back to the game mechanics. - I agree that the Kenway saga is a bit of an excessive re-use of assets for an 'expansion class game' from its predecessor which was just like 'a changed name', the same as the treatment of the Ezio trilogy. - also a miss-opp in the plot when the strong link between Unity and Rogue wasn't discovered, Shay just disappeared after killing Arno's father. He just died, which fans 'had to explain with speculation and theory, regarding the relationship between Charles Dorian and the colonial branch of the Templars'. Maybe it's the same vague with Kassandra's journey while Staff of Hermes Trimegistus on her hand which 'fortunately caught up' with Eivor. I really agree with your argument that one of the best things in AC Rogue is to develop its purpose as a mediator between AC series, which usually each settlements always stands alone. But I personally see Rogue as a polished form of the AC Series with the same generation engine (III, Black Flag, Rogue) -> I consider this to be the Kenway trilogy. I really support that AC Rogue is not a failure or recycling dissapoinment from the previous AC, just like you explaination, an opportunity that was not utilized and executed properly. If I could go back in time, I would make Rogue into the Kenway Saga, but Haytham's journey from Edward's assassination to the end of his life in the hands of Connor. About how he, who should have assassin blood, instead became a templar, managing the Colony Rite. If this is the case, we can develop the plot of each main character in Kenway Saga with the interconnection of each Kenway family in terms of gameplay, not lore narrative wisdom outside the franchise. For example, I don't want the same treatment as Juno experienced with her Instrument of the First Will being 'turned off' in the comics, not the main game series.

One thing that bothers me about the assassin/templar conflict is the flawed idea that you can't have order with freedom. You can. That's the very premise of the ideology of anarchism. Every anarchist society both in history and the ones that exist today have proven this to be true. Hell the word anarchy literally means "Order with no rulers". Anarchism itself literally debunks the templars.

The worse part of Assassins creed isn't just that they don't do sequels is the fact they fucking set one up with Rogue, sure sure unity is suppose to the sequel but like: 1: You name drop Conner Kenway, who is sending letters to his aunt who is in Unity (the book at least). I think Rogue is great if your not expecting a very long game sort of like Mirage. Neither had a spectacular syory in my eyes and for different reasons. The pacing for Rogue is one of my issues. There's hardly any confrontations with Shay and the Brotherhood. They don't listen, he steals from them, they chase, and he falls seemingly dying. I can understand him wanting to protect people but he basically became a puppet and his hypocrisy kind of shows in the ending. As far as I know, there was no reason for Shay to come after Arno's father or Pandora's box. Shay lost sight of his own Creed and standing firmly on what the Brotherhood actually represents. His actions also impacted two different protagonist later on the timeline. His deeds is what made Connor. He also helped in turning Arno's life around either for worst or better. I think Shay was an excellent concept, but I wanted to see him question his actions more after committing them. I would have preferred a small expansion to Rogue showing us whether or not Shay regretted some of the things he did and whether or not he would havr changed some of them. Connor and Arno being dual protagonist in a game sounds great, but I'd much rather see them expand and fix their Brotherhoods. I'd actually prefer more settings and different characters because I like jumping around and traveling the world of AC in different time periods. It's what makes it one of my favorite franchises. A Haytham game though, would be something I'd like to see.

I think Rogue did it better than newer AC games when it comes to fanservice. Post Origins games tries to connect everything to each other and it just makes the world feel small rather than to make it feel big, AC2's Monterrigioni statues felt there is more to the lore than what it seems, Origins and ownards makes it feel like entire power balance struggle that continued for generations is condensed to 3-4 families especially Odyssey's First Blade DLC. They even miss the mark in Mirage when we learn Roshan's ""surname"". Bin Lahad meant daughter of Lahad, it's not a surname in the western sense. Rogue's fanservice mission is on the spot though. It's a nice wink to the fans who are invested in the series. If Rogue was made today we would've learned Shay is Arno's grandfather or something.

This is one of the reasons why I love AC3, 4, Rogue, Liberation and Unity so much. They are all very well connected, it feels as one very detailed story shown from different perspectives. Getting new protagonist and no returning side characters in every single new game is somewhat tiring for me, bacause I want to know what happened to the characters we've seen before - especially Edward, Shay and Arno. I would also really like to play more as Haytham but sadly there is not that much to his story to add. I was positively surprised (SPOILER) when I found out that Basim is the new modern dat protagonist and that he's gonna get sequel, but now I'm afraid that ubisoft will probably abandon him and we will never see what happened between Mirage and Valhalla and wht he's gonna do in modern day. My only problem with Rogue is that Shay's switch to the Templars happens too quickly. There should've been more conflict between him and Achilles and the other Assassins. I also believe that Shay should've been the one, who "opens" the Precursor Site in Haiti too. With Haiti and Lisbon combined, Shay's raging out on Achilles would've been more realistic and justified. There's also should've been more missions before we start taking over gang hideouts and rule over New York. I know that the devs only had 8 months to finish this game, but still. The story is fine, but the build up/pacing is lackluster.

Having watched this, I think I figured out why I keep remembering Rogue. I think the assassins, up to this point, had been too much the "good guys". Every society, large or small, has pr***s and personality conflicts. I just feel that Shaun being a bit annoying (to me at least), or William's actions towards Desmond were a bit... bland in this consideration. I feel Rogue was the first one to crack that shiny surface for me - make them more believable, and also to open up the Templars however slightly. But yes, a lot of wasted potential which seems to have become Ubisoft's defining feature.

Had they focused soley on rogue and then released unity a year or two after I think the franchise would be in a way better spot. Also SHAY DESERVES A SEQUEL WITH ARNO. Ubisoft dropped the ball with this so bad.

Rogue did great by connecting itself to unity but I HATE that because it didn’t release on the ps4 I played it before unity. Would’ve loved to experience the shock of having to kill Arno’s father after spending an entire game with Arno

Rogue really hurts me as I really do enjoy it, as you mentioned, the perfect ending to the Kenway Saga was to question if the Assassins truly are valid in their methods and goals, however with the roles becoming reversed the opportunity for nuance was wasted. It's a game that truly deserved the Unity treatment, a far longer development time to focus on the story. I would absolutely love for Ubisoft to attempt this concept again as the earlier games were masterful in its moral ambiguity that feels lost on the franchise today.

if you're bringing in 'morality' towards specific points in Human history then you're just a Drone that's a part of the Modern Ideological Dogma... "morality" is an abstract that's stemmed from an idea to give 'meaning' against the haphazardly on what the basis level of Good and Evil offers, despite that it isn't the case because of how "morality" as a concept is paradoxical by or against nature... there's no measures to deter a set of principles between Good and Evil for you to be deemed as 'moral' since the contradiction plays at hand with the concept of 'immoral' that's stemmed from 'moral' but it plays contradictory connotations with the concept of 'moral' by acknowledging the alignment and principles through Good and Evil, and Immoral is deemed to differentiate those who apparently don't set the standards of what's 'moral' which for some reason alludes to 'Good'...

Great my 1st comment was shadowb__nned... if you actually bringing in a concept such as 'morality' towards Humans in a time where the concept of 'morality' wasn't a thing for an obvious reason then you've been spoonfed the Modern Ideological Dogma within the Modern Era of Humans far too much... Rogue is one of my favorite AC games partially because I'm from near where the River Valley is based on. The reason I think the Assassins are out of character is because the Assassins have the upper hand while throughout history they were responding to Templars. I also think the reason the Templars are out of character is because they're using Shay's ideals to manipulate him. Edit: Grammer. I also think that the Assassin's never intended to use poison gas on civilians but the Templars told Shay they were to turn him against the Assassins more.

if anyone truly believes that for some reason the Colonial Assassin's are 'out of CHarAcTer' then how tf are you even an Assassin's Creed fan if you're this blind towards the Assassin's Creed story since AC1... imagine bashing Rogue for apparently having this aspect when AC2 was extremely poorly written in its Assassin V. Templar dilemma...

I’m still disappointed they just made the Assassins go all “police brutality” essentially, and made THEM the “reckless ones who cause casualties” which made it basically the same plot as all the other games, (“Guy joins team to fight another team that hurts civilians”) instead of ACTUALLY seeing someone “switch” and “see things from the Templar point of view” I still want a Templar version of when Ezio broke down the rules of the Creed (or when James Kidd did the same) I expected all of Haythams “talks” with Shay to go like “oh you think freedom is good, but freedom is chaos… etc” (the SAME stuff he said to Connor in AC3) but NOPE, Instead, Haytham was all “oh look at them, they killed innocents, see, told you bro, they can’t be trusted, they’re too caught up in themselves to think before they act” (Which is a dumb plot, because it could’ve been used against an Assassin OR a Templar, it’s not “unique” to either side’s “Views”)

I don't know if I'd call the flaws displayed by the creed as tyrannies, lest you speak of how the North American branch was sabotaged by templaric or otherwise coercive & abusive influences [one of the mentors utilizes toxic tactics to raise the fledgling kin.] I think the story is an interesting concept given terrible execution & that napoleon guy or whatever his name was [the 1 guy who yelled at Shay for "defying the Order" like a fucking pussy I forgot his name fr] shoulda been revealed as a templar saboteur & the 1 who saved Shay's life should have been revealed to be a counter saboteur from the Assassins, which would lead to Shay taking on a neutral stance for they don't know what or who to believe anymore because the mind games broke his psyche. Hence why he's off his hinges in Unity, which I also think kinda suck. I think the point is that the Creed has fallen a Tad without Ezio's influence, & since it stretched itself a tad thin without the soul of the creed...the praxeology of it, it simply started to forget itself. Someone needed to water it, for the memories were wilting. Or in the lyrics of a different song The wind tried to blow them up, the roots were trying to hold them down they got tired of playing games with the 2 sides. But Shay didn't say "let's tear up the ground." Instead he torn innocents & whoever else laid in his path of blinded wrath.

What i liked in this game is that it combines the city with the sea gameplay, and the map is actually full of things to do, and tbe gameplay is much better than any of the other two games, and i also liked how it connects like 4 games. Although i liked Shay, the rest of the templars may be some of the most terrible AC characters ever written, they are just there for no reason. And Shay joining the templars out of nowhere is absolute garbage writing

Sorry to busrt your bubble, but rogue broke plenty of canon. Only this is implied canon within the games and not the books. Note, the books were never canon, until ubisoft could use them to justify kassandra as canon. Haytham was in reality, implied to have has a history of ties with the assassins brotherhood, that left the brotherhood with a lot of respect for haytham at the start of AC3. Haytham also lies to the templar grand master, as he doesn't actually defeat all the assassins despite him telling the grand master that he did. We see this clearly as the brotherhood survived from london, and found haytham during his journey the America. Haytham is also far more kind and reasonable until we meet him again as Connor. This is because between the time we play as Haytham and Connor, haytham lost everything. He lost the grand temple in a sense, as he couldn't get in. He lost the woman he loved, as she separated from him due to his ties with the templars, and he lost his son in the same way. Haytham also gained a scar on his face in this time. Rogue doesn't reflect any of this stuff, and in fact, connor's mother should really have been in the game. To add to this, Bellec from unity, was supposed to be in the colonies at this time, but he isn't in the game. I love AC Rogue! It is amazing! Bit accuracy isn't always it's strong suit.

@@TheSpaniardAssassin yeah, it's a lesser known thing. But nicely made video in any case! Just remember that misconceptions are common in AC community for some reason. Like with syndicate. We know for a fact much about the original victory game, such as Jacob being the only protagonist, and a confrontation between him and evie (evie was a older woman and not his sister) in a graveyard at the end of thr story. Yet this information is still rare, and people carry on believing lies about the games development. That is one such example of how often many fans are missing the accurate or real picture with many elements of the AC franchise. So don't worry, your hardly poorly informed, as you normally get it right and you clearly know a lot about these games!

What I don't understand is.. Other then the Assassin Creed Legendary Collection that includes IV: Black Flag, Rogue: Remastered, Unity, Syndicate, Origins & Odyssey... (Oh the Rebel collection that features IV: Black Flag & Rogue: Remastered, exclusive to Nintendo switch) Ubisoft doesn't bundle Rogue or mention it in sequel games. (Outfits don't count). What I mean is.. The Assassin's Creed Triple Pack features IV: Black Flag, Unity & Syndicate. (Strange leave out Rogue because it wasn't out on PS4 & XBOX One at the time so makes sense). Assassin's Creed Origins: In the Assassin's Franchise tab, it's updated to the point of selling you Odyssey & Valhalla while also selling you Syndicate, Unity & Black Flag but not Rogue: Remastered. Assassin's Creed Odyssey's Assassin's Franchise tab sells you Valhalla, Origins, Syndicate, Unity, Black Flag but no Rogue. I completely understand why Ubisoft doesn't advertise the Eatzio Collection in their newer games. Unity at least advertised Chronicles: China. Odyssey Ultimate Edition bundled AC3 Remastered for some reason I don't know.
