I thought doing this was always termed as "crumbing," because you're leaving bread crumbs to keep a potential girl's interest alive, while you pursue someone/thing else.

When Anna said, "My channel is dying" just made me sad. Her contents have helped me be aware of the both the good and toxic sh*t within and around me. More people should watch them.

As a girl, I've done this, too, although it wasn't in the interest of sex. It was more to validate that I was desirable and wanted. Ultimately, it was a problem of self-worth, and like Anna, I realized that it was sometimes hurtful and had to stop.

I feel like Squarespace just continues to sponsor Anna in order to hear "Daddy Squarespace" (can't blame them)

This isn't a guy only thing. I've been breadcrumbed by practically all my dates in the last couple of years. What they all had in common were a lack of interest and effort, and they'd text maybe once a week or two, but not bother replying after. Then a week or two they'd drop another hi and that's it. As I found out, such people are already going out with someone else, but they want a backup in case it doesn't work out. If and when it works out then I'll get ghosted.

Piggybacking sounds like a whole bunch of people that were never taught how a relationship should start only what is expected from a relationship, suddenly interacting with the opposite sex but both are just lost and confused. So one is like are they interested in me and the other is am I good enough to date but both are fine with flirting.

It’s really hard to come to terms with being the backup option to someone you really liked

Not gonna lie, I was ready to be upset that you framed it like only guys do this, but I kept watching to see where you went with it, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was acknowledged that women do it as well. Honestly, I can think of a few times this has been done to me, and sadly I can think of some times that I probably did this to others without really understanding what I was doing and how wrong it was. It's a good thing to draw attention to. People are so afraid of finding themselves in a void where they don't have options immediately available to them that they end up crossing lines they shouldn't cross. I think this has some overlap with Test Driving - where someone will start showing interest in a person who they feel might be a relationship candidate, even though they already have a relationship, because they intend to break things off with the current SO and want to have someone to fill that void immediately. All that said, you still ended up wounding me deeply, Anna. At 35, I felt those comments about aging all too keenly, and I didn't appreciate it one bit. :'(

It's always kind of a different level of growth and maturity when the toxic person becomes able to cop to their issues independently without having to be told about them. That added self awareness is extra refreshing

This is something I used to be VERY guilty of. I reached a point in my life where I determined my self worth by how many people I was associating with. When I finally realized that this wasn't the case and the effects of my actions I realized I had to start a the long process of self growth.
