Couldn't agree more. I've been at this for around 14+ years now and I still find videos like this enlightening to remind me to go back to the well now and again. The way that Miss Lyla presents them is clean and concise and to the point, and I appreciate that.

It's a small thing but when you show your brushstrokes in real time it gives a better feel for applying the paint, if that makes sense. It does help me seeing this, I'm not sure why, but it does.

@@LylaMev- Washes certainly have their place, especially when you’re short of time and are painting up large units of figures. Also, if you try black-lining belts and straps - as was once the fashion with historical minis - most of us mere mortals will hash it up. And it’s infinitely better when you have zero artistic talent to dollop some wash into the eye-cavities of a mini than to try to paint eyes.

I feel like I've made a lot of improvements recently due to videos like these. It comes with those moments where you dare to try something new and suddenly it works and you can see your results, but I think one of the problems with quickly improving in only a couple of areas is that you miss other fundamentals. For example, i'm painting Black Templar, because I wanted a colour scheme that was simple that I liked. I simply prime in Abaddon Black, then Use a makeup brush to dry brush Citadel Thunderhawk blue and Vallejo Wolf Grey over the top. Looks good IMO. I then just paint the rest based on the imperium magazine instructions for Sisters. But then I've found I get a bunch of gritty texture on some of my surfaces. I think it's from the drybrushing. So there's little things like painting hygeine steps and so on I guess I've missed. I assume that's what's been referred to on this channel as "the gap".

I literally thought layering was just going 100% over the paint you just put on. I was always thinking why would we do that. Now I understand it's more like a pyramid and we go maybe 80% over the paint you just put on. I feel like my game is about to step up.

hey Lyla would you make any intermediate videos? I have been looking for a video that helps me understand *where* to place volumetric highlights (like glazing a marines leg like a cylinder with a line, and his head like a sphere). I am really bad at deciding where these highlights go onto a model - people say above and foward but some models are really awkard to paint like that. This video really helps a lot though. I still get really confused with bits of a mode that are parallel to the light and stuff - like the top panel of a dreadnought that faces the sky. Anyway, thank you this helps a ton!

I’ve heard good things about Tamiya Panel Liner, which is used to add fine lines to aircraft and car models. Also works, when used sparingly, with human minis.

My painting skills are low to nonexistent. Even if I use speedpaint or Contrast Paint I can waste 3+ hours on one single medium mini and not be satisfied with it! My goal for this year was to paint 1-2 minis a week. Work messed up that plan by sending me away in 3 week rotation periods, for 4.5 months. I am lucky if I will finish 1 mini for every period I am home😳 Any way, this did not feel like help for a noob. Most of these techniques is far from noob level. Who does Lining? Pro or Semi-pro. Not noobs. We just want minis on the table fast. Usually I like Lyla, but she missed the mark on this video!

There is a big difference between spending 6 months painting 5 models for box art, and painting 40 models for next week's tournament. Same with Golden Demon winners. Most won't be using washes/shades either.

I find oils are great for adding shading - for example on the underside/wheelhubs of vehicles, and also for painting horses, since the slow-drying time allows you to blend away for ages until you get natural looking skin-tones and musculature. Nothing worse than a horse painted in a single colour or with highlights in a second colour.
@alexispulido2909
@alexispulido2909 10 месяцев назад
The oils are fine. but they add brightness to the shadow, due to their own composition. If you use oils to shadow a zone, don't forget to apply matte varnish on top. To avoid shine.
@sirrathersplendid4825
@sirrathersplendid4825 10 месяцев назад
@@alexispulido2909- Agreed. I always spray my painted minis with matt varnish to protect them on the tabletop, so the sheen of oils is no problem. In fact for horses I rather like the sheen, and am in two minds about varnishing them. 🫤

Just the nature of the interweb these days. I hope that the experience as a Patreon member is better... I cannot speak directly to that.
