A lot of times NFL running backs are underappreciated for all their efforts on the field whether it is blocking or actually running the ball well. Today we look at the only 8 players in NFL history to rush for over 2000 yards in a single season. These eight guys the league couldn't ignore because of how good their performances were!

People forget how early Sanders could've broken the all time rushing record. He retired after another 1,000+ yard season, just 1k yards short of Walter Payton's record. Took Emmitt Smith playing for quite a while after his prime & many years to finally beat it
@Gungho73
@Gungho73 3 месяца назад
Yeah we don't have video of Barry Sanders decline. Even Emmitt admitted he would've likely had the record had he stayed. He had almost 1500 yards rushing and only 4? TD I think his final year and it was considered a "down year." Honestly absurd looking back on it.

People forget that Payton played (3) 14 game seasons, lost 7 games to a strike shortened season and then bowed out gracefully his last season accommodate Neal Anderson. That's about 16 games and 1,500 rushing yards given away. Sanders would've needed 2,500 rushing yards to catch Walter when these are considered. I'm not saying that Barry couldn't have gotten the yards, but you can't only factor in what Sanders gave away without also factoring in what Walter gave away.

@@Bluewatercat Barry was one dimensional whereas Walter did everything. Barry is without a doubt the greatest breakaway runner of all time. But Payton was also a primary receiver with nearly 2,500 more yards than Barry. And Payton is the greatest blocking HB of all-time. In today's sports world, where all metrics are calculated to determine the GOAT, Payton's all around game makes him the best, by a wide margin.

Walter Payton was on the verge of a 2,000 yard rushing season in 1977 when the season was only 14 games. The final game was played on a literal field of ice. Everyone was slipping and falling and consequently Walter came up short. If it was a 16 game season, no doubt Payton would hold the record. Walter was also the Bears primary receiver and blocked on plays when he didn't have the ball. None of the other backs had these responsibilities.

Amen. Walter Payton is the greatest running back of all time, because he was a "complete" running back, that spawned LT, Marshall Faulk, Christian McCaffrey and others too. What may be the most amazing thing about Peterson's 2000+ yard season is not that it came 8 months after the knee injury. It's that it came on a team with no other offense. Everyone on the planet knew Peterson was going to get the ball on most plays. He was frequently facing 9-10 men in the box because no defense was worried that Ponder was going to beat them in the air... and still couldn't be contained.

It’s all about the touches and not number of games played to try to make a valid comparison. When looking at rushing attempts, Barry and OJ win the contest, with both having roughly the same number of rushing attempts. All others have more to much more attempts. Davis had nearly 60 more attempts that season vs Barry and OJ. Barry posted the best per rushing average at 6.1 yards per rush and was the oldest player to rush for 2000 yards in a season. Sanders had a shitty first two games and then rushed for exactly 2,000 yards in the final 14 games, an average of 142.8 yards per game. Honorable mention. Walter Payton with over 1,850 yards. If the bears had rushed the ball another 36 times, he would have reached 2000 yards.

Eric Dickerson's 2,000-yard season is still the gold standard, but with the way modern running backs are used, is there any chance this record will be broken, or are we witnessing the end of true workhorse backs in the NFL?

Peterson was disgusting as a runner. People forget they he had one year with a good qb other than that he never had any support. Dominating on the ground when the defense can load the box every play is amazing.

@LifeIsChill13 I would argue they wouldn't have won that superbowl either way because of how beat up farve was after the bounty gate bs. However, it seems the saints may have won but cursed themselves in the process, which makes me smile every time it rears it's ugly head.

The 2k year the Vikings felt like they went back to the 60's with how dominant their run game was and how lacking the passing game was. Not to mention he had injuries that appeared during the season yet still cranked those yards out. It was honestly baffling how much he was doing to the point it completely overshadowed iirc a Kansas City RB Jamaal Charles? Who I think was also recovering from a significant injury at the time.

@@jeff8366 Losing 4 Superbowls is far more of a curse! At least the Saints knew how to take advantage of their opportunity. You Viqueens fans never cease to amaze as if your team never had some form of "bounties" or any NFL team for that matter, when Cris Carter could tell you otherwise; it's not like Goodell used the Saints as scapegoats due to the league being sued by former players to save face and attempt to "protect the shield" or anything! Should I fell to mention your team had a better chance in 98 to go to the SB and botched that up by losing to the Falcons who were 14-2 that year but didn't nearly possess the same firepower! Oh and what happened against the Giants 2 years later? Yeah, they've owned the Saints in the playoffs (lately seems the only team they can beat just to get curb stomped the following week) except the one time when it counted most! That puts a smile upon my face every time!

Terrell Davis would have the record for most yards in a season if they didn't rest him for 8 total quarters that season. Denver would be up by so much that they'd sit him for the rest of the game. He missed two total games bc of that and still ran for 2,008 yards. That o line with his cut back style was a match made in heaven and beautiful to watch.

Shame that Earl Campbell never had a 2000 yard season, but he was EXTREMELY close. Four games with 200+ yards, and he only played in 14 games (with 370 attempts!) If he had played all 16 games at the same rate, he'd most likely have the record, though he was already getting run into the ground.

As life long Bills fan, of course OJ being the first, and I appreciate that you mentioned how many actual games he played is phenomenal, ED was just as special. I was born in June '78 so I missed OJ completely, and only saw the tail end of ED's career! I watched every other backs complete career! IMO, Sanders doing it in year 8 is utterly amazing! We all know how bad the rest of the offense could be at various times of his career! Most backs don't last 8 yrs!

The thing about Jamal Lewis’ 2000 yard season is the run defense of the Browns that year. He got over 500 yards in two games against them! Alstott played that D the same year and got over 200 yards. They were terrible! I think OJ’s was the most impressive because of 14 games plus I think Defenses were better in the late ‘70’s compared to say the segregated early sixties that Jim Brown ran in

Jim Brown had 1,863 yd in 14 games. So he would have easily got to 2000 in a 16 game season. He also had 1,527 yd in 12 games in 1957 so theoretically could have done it twice in a 16-game season.
