Description: English / Français / Português
In Gabon (Equatorial Africa), 10 km from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and 20 km south of the Equator line, daily rains, storms and tornadoes stop completely during the dry season from late May to mid-September. This late afternoon of July, a group of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), composed of about twenty individuals, arrive at one of the 6 large mirrors (2500x1220 m/m) placed in their forest by Xavier and Anne-Marie HUBERT-BRIERRE and their friend Michel GUISS DJOMOU for nearly 10 years. These chimpanzees all chew an "Ozouga", (Sacoglottis gabonensis). A green, smooth, half-round fruit (drupe) with a diameter of 4 centimetres containing 1 to 3 seeds whose sweet taste is also a favourite among elephants, primates as mandrills. Gorillas and chimpanzees with more fragile teeth chew only the outer pulp of these fruits.
The chimpanzee groups in the region know these mirrors. They stay in front of it from time to time for their learning in the mirror, because in chimpanzees, just like in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. This mirror training is much easier for the very young human child because his parents have already done it and with speech can quietly explain to him that his reflection is not a playmate copying all his movements but himself.
This very young chimpanzee, alone in the group, is happy to discover in the mirror a playmate. Bold, under the admiring gaze of the other chimpanzees, he does not hesitate to come and touch him, but his fingers hit the surface of the mirror.
While all chimpanzees recognize each of their neighbours in the mirror, they also see a stranger they have never seen, their own image. Some of them scratch their hair repeatedly, which is a sign that they are more frustrated and uncomfortable than others with their reflection.
----

They are aware of reflections because they see reflections when drinking water but in that last seconds when the ape touches the mirror and freaks it is because it was expecting a water like touch and was met with a hard touch and the reflection is so much sharper than water that it confuses them between is it a reflection or is it another ape?

@zecuse

That's assuming that the area they're drinking from is calm enough to allow for a reflection to be seen clearly. Otherwise, the distortions would probably be mistaken for the undergrowth in the puddle. The other problem is that your face would probably be in shadow because the light is mostly coming from above you, so the reflection looks more like a shadow anyway.

*After reading numerous comments calling for the dismantling of these sadistic mirrors, your feedback on my video encourages us to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion.* It is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. We are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then we do the editing of the videos and write a long description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... It's a choice.. May I suggest you some of my 160 home-made videos from my channel which have never been recommended by RU-vid and which unfortunately have a very small number of views even though they are very instructive such as: A male and a female leopard overuse a mirror for their SMS. @@farenhite4329 I was very surprised when I saw it happen, I had to check again just to be sure. But, they are definitely looking at the mirror when he displays, and they definitely turn from the mirror (confirm that it is him) and react. Now, there might have been a vocal component that I missed (and they reacted to the 'sound'), but if not, it is almost certain that they have an understanding that it is reflecting an immediate reality (to which they must react). Whether that means they understand that they, themselves, are being reflected I can't quite say (to short a span of a single instance - to small a sample size), but they did not react as i the alpha was 'behind' the mirror - so they do have the geometry figured out.

Several chimps in this troupe seem to recognize themselves in the mirror and realize that others in the mirror are actually reflections of members of the troupe. Chimpanzees recognize the reflection of the troop members. At times, facing the mirror, they turn their heads to check the physical presence on their back of a member whose reflection they see. They seem to have understood the reflective properties of a mirror. On the other hand, many are still confused and worried about the presence of an unknown individual in the mirror who is not physically in their back when they turn around! Their own image that they don't know!

@@XHB06400CANNES Yeah, I've watched quite a few of your videos, and we have had this discussion only from the other direction. There are many videos in which the chimps don't seem to recognize themselves - even mothers carrying babies. In those instances, I have made the point that it seems as if the mother and baby should each be able to see that "if that's my mom/baby, then that other chimp must be me!" Even so, in a lot of the videos they don't seem to make that connection, but this troupe seems very aware of it.

*Your feedback on my videos encourages us to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion.* It is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. May I suggest you some of my 160 home-made videos from my channel which have never been recommended by RU-vid and which unfortunately have a very small number of views even though they are very instructive such as: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nYKpZnSaeAs.html Baby elephant sleeps standing up glued to mom so as not to be left out when the night walk restarts? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6I009XLJr4c.html Elephants enthusiastically enjoying a healthy mud bath ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8TbsrgYbyI4.html an elephant crossing a river splashes camera trap ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-at6BdMfrXxE.html A male elephant walks in the night, thinking of his next girlfriend. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xgMWeqCfAzY.html Elephant VS camera trap in Gabon. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gqj_bY0g0C0.html Elephant VS camera trap in Gabon. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bAOJzN4PxEE.html a one-eyed elephant mows tall grass in front of the mirror for better camera trap field of view ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YkmPBl4NPv8.html In Gabon front of trap cameras, elephants crossing Ndouni River. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oIH76mIIob4.html Eaters of waterlilies: Buffalo, Elephant, Sitatunga ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-quaL3-TxUY0.html African Jacana a swamp dwelling antelope-pecker: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0Qz5DW4632U.html Shot in Gabon on the evening of the first major storm after the dry season. Looked like the chimp at the right of the mirror, near the bay, was signing to the others. Not Koko’s way, but nature’s way. You do have to watch a while to see the bravest try to scare the intruders away.

English is not my native language and despite the help of translation software I can't understand some sentences or words. Can you explain to me: "near the bay" "was signing to the others" Is it the young male chewing on an ozouga and frequently scratching himself? The one who, with a gesture of his right hand, seems to be chasing a fly that would be sitting on the mirror at 01:04?

In a gorilla family (10/12 individuals) there is the chief (the silverback) and his harem (3 to 5 females that he doesn't share with other males, so his own wives) and their descendants (the blackbacks). He must protect his family and his authority is not challenged except rarely by one of his teenage sons, who usually leaves his birth family to create his own family by attracting females from other groups. *_Gorillas are peaceful great apes. They are frugivorous herbivores. They dont eat the flesh!_* In a group of chimpanzees (25/40 individuals), there are several silverbacks (alpha males or dominant males) that must constantly justify their alpha male status in the eyes of the females and be aggressive towards adolescent male suitors. Females (not wives) are available to the dominant males. The structure of the group is not stable as it can split or fuse with other groups. *_Chimpanzees are belligerent apes. They are omnivorous. They eat the meat of small antelopes, porcupines, palm rats and also small monkeys._* Check out more of my 160 homemade videos from my channel and don't forget to read the description attached to each of them, you will find very interesting information. ru-vid.comvideos Good vision!

Why is only one butt all swollen? Does that mean they’re sick?
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 4 года назад
This hairless swollen butt is that of a female oestrus. Scientists believe that this voluminous anogenital swelling in female chimpanzees is intended to let the dominant males in the group know about it. This is not the case in female gorillas. According to the scientists, this is why gorillas' penises are three times shorter than those of chimpanzees.Thank you for watching more of my 160 home made videos posted on my channel and read the description attached to each one.
