Building a PERFECT backswing is within the reach of EVERY golfer. The basic movements of Extending, Tilting, and Turning are performed every single day by every single person on the planet going about their daily lives. There's really is no MAGIC secret gifted to the best golfers, just an understanding of how to to move correctly. It's NOT a fitness or lack of flexibility thing, it's a lack of clear, precise instruction thing.
The blending of Extending, Tilting, and Turning has been the way good golfers move for generations. The basic movements of the golf swing were clearly defined and described by Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett of Stack & Tilt when they published their book "The Stack and Tilt Golf Swing" back in 2009.
Knowing HOW TO MOVE is the KEY to training the correct movement patterns. Knowing exactly WHERE TO MOVE TO builds a foundation to the golf swing that is present in ALL GOOD golfers, and CONSPICUOUSLY ABSENT in poorer ones. Predicability is key!
The GOLFTEC SwingTru Study proves how the movements patterns that good golfers demonstrate are more similar to each other, than different. Equally, poor golfers move in a predictably POOR way - it's what defines them as poor players!
This video tackles the specific details of HOW TO MOVE from set-up to the top of the backswing and should be applied by ALL GOLFERS, from beginners looking to build their swing to more established players looking to be more consistent.
Any questions? Post them down below, and please consider "liking" and sharing this video if you found it helpful. Please subscribe to my channel and grow the community.

40 years of playing around a high single handicap and I've never heard the brilliant "losing an arm wresting match" feel for the top of the back-swing. That's the priceless sort of detail that gets missed "easy" quick fix videos. Thanks and keep up the great work Rob!

We need detail and that's why I enjoy watching your videos. I'm in the process of overhauling my snatch it inside, over the top, early extend and flip the hands swing and you're videos are extremely helpful. Thank you for the detail and your thorough approach to teaching. I do respectfully prefer to think of the sequence as "tilt, turn and extend" vs. "extend, tilt and turn" . I'm a tired 74 year old Marine Corps veteran hoping to play better golf before I'm underground and off to the next adventure.

I used the S and T when it first came out for about 4 months. The first 9 I played, I shot a 30 from the Blue tees. That Friday I shot 68 with 5 birdies and an Eagle. I was 67 at the time. My handicap dropped 4 shots to a plus one. Sadly it left me about 4 months later and I could never get it back. I am now almost 79 and play to between a 3-5 hcp. I saw this video and subsequently others of yours. All of a sudden, the light went on. Due to Covid I haven't left my golf community, but if I could I think I would come to Singapore. You took the original teachings and finally explained a number of the mysteries and fine tuned them. I am back to hitting the ball better than ever in just a few days and more importantly when I hit a bad shot, I understand what I did and how to fix it. You are a wonderful communicator and a fabulous teacher. I have recommended you to numerous friends. Thanks for finally explaining the Stack and Tilt.

Did this today to help get a more consistent backswing. What a difference! I was practicing this while hitting into my net at home. The drill made it very easy to get the feel for a proper backswing and position at the top. It also lengthened my backswing a little bit. Can’t take this to the range yet, but it definitely made my strikes more consistent. Hopefully longer too!

I think when most people say too detailed they mean they don’t have the attention span to just watch the video for what it’s worth. Typically 7-9 minutes is about all I’ll give a video to its end unless it intrigues me. Your breaking down the swing and explaining it plainly is of great value to anyone that isn’t a pro. While the important bit is the sequence in between, it's a big help having these back swing and down swing follow through positions so you have a feel for what you're trying to achieve. Thank you Rob for this lesson as I have been striving to attain this backswing position for a decade +. The key for me is the shaft parallel with the external rotation of the right arm. I was already fine with the extension, tilt and rotation but your explanation of the parallel shaft position is the finest I have been told and now I will be able to train myself into the proper backswing position. I had shoulder surgery on my right shoulder: a detached supraspinatus and rotator cuff tear some 3 years back which can limit the amount of external rotation I can achieve and maintain throughout the swing, but now I can find the right blend of all the essential elements to the backswing. Thank again for your teaching.

Hi Rob, you are the best Stack & Tilt teacher on RU-vid, and I've watched them all. Thanks to this video, for the first time my backswing is where it should be at the top, in a very powerful position. I've also tried to ingrain your forward swing video moves. My problem is more than half the time my left hip (I'm right-handed) spins out instead of moving laterally, causing me to come over the top. That results in low pull hooks, thinned slices and embarrassing tops that dribble 10 yards. Do you have a video on how to ingrain the lateral slide and stop the spin? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Rob, first off, thanks so much for all the great instruction. Things had gone awry for me, and the conversion to stack and tilt has righted the ship and golf is getting fun again. I have a question about the rotational condition of the thighs at the top of the swing. It would seem we have a “choice “ as to the position of the femoral heads in the hip socket. We can be in external rotation with the thighs or we can be in internal rotation with the thighs. Being in dual external rotation at the top seems to make it more difficult if not impossible to swing down along the proper path . If I am in dual internal rotation of my thighs at the top, the downswing feels automatic. I apologize in advance if this is something you’ve addressed in a previous video. But it seems very relevant and I suspect those that may be struggling with S&T are struggling because they are in dual external rotation of the thighs at the top. Thanks Rob!

Rob, I just found your videos and you do a very nice job of describing different aspects of the golf swing. It would be great if you could do a video that expands on this in a slightly different direction. Not many instructors talk about tension in the arms and whether the arms help pull the body back on the backswing (i.e. help the turn). You need some tension to hold the arms up, but how much? Arm tension is almost impossible to see on the backswing in video. I got to a sub 5 handicap but my swing was too much arms driven which resulted in pulling down too much, (which extended my lead wrist and opened the clubface) and caused me being a little steep and fighting a right miss. My compensation was to early extend to shallow the shaft. But a big part of this was pattern was initiated by too much arm tension and pulling my turn back with my arms which deactivated my core and then starting the transition with a little too much arm pull.

@@golftecasia Thank you very much Rob, it just seems to me that if you start the backswing with the club head on a horizontal plane (As per brief clip,) and the hands rising to that plane, then when on the down swing when the spine tilts, the club head plane also tilts as per Hogan’s diagram on page 88 of his book. This is change of plane if it is true was not as per your brief swing in the video.

Super video Rob! One quick question on the sequencing of the blend of the 4 movements you describe in the real backswing (Vs. the exercise of extending first). 1) Internal rotation right shoulder 2) rotating of the body 3) extending 4) tilting left . Do you start and finish the 4 of them at P1 and finish all them at P4 ? For example does 1) start at P1 and finishes at P2 or continues it till P4 ? Do you typically start 3) after P2? What about 2) and 4)?

Totally agree with teaching the detail, if that detail leads to the understanding of the intuition behind it. I find most instructors don't want you to understand the detail so you are reliant on them and are forced to extend the lesson path longer so they make more money. Frankly, most instructors only understand the "cookie cutter" methodology they learned and can't adapt.
