Stack & Tilt - "Does It Work For The Driver?"

The number one question I get asked on the channel, is “does this work for the driver?”, and more often than not, that question is in relation to whether or not the prescribed “weight forward” concept of Stack&Tilt transfers from irons to driver.
It extremely common to hear about people “trying Stack&Tilt” and seeing immediately gains with their irons, but those improvements don’t seem to transfer so well with the driver.
The main reason for this is a poor concept of how the weight is forwards throughout the swing. “The Wrench” 🔧 drill is a popular drill to help a golfer have enough weight on their lead leg at impact, by setting up with the vast majority of the weight on the lead side and keeping it there. This drill is 100% transferable to the driver and this video will explain how to take this concept and transform your driver swing into a powerful pivot motion the produces a predictable pattern of shots. No more wicked slices and wasted distance!
Stack&Tilt was actually DESIGNED for the driver, and with this in mind, I want to show you exactly how to apply the system to one of you out there who is struggling with your driver. If you’ve tried Stack&Tilt, but been unable to make the driver work, I’m offering one person a full swing analysis and online lesson (worth $125) which I will film and post on the channel for everyone to watch. If you think you’d benefit from a driver lesson with me (and you’re comfortable with your swings and your lesson being broadcast on the channel), then comment down below with your reasons for wanting this lesson. I’ll choose one person and post the full lesson video in the coming weeks.

I’ve watched most of not all of your videos. You’re unquestionably the best golf instructor I’ve come across. You express yourself so clearly and the points you make can immediately be practiced and incorporated into the swing. I can’t thank you adequately Rob Chaney.

I am Robert, a life time slicer. I quit golf several times during my life due to a terrible slice that I could not fix. I am now 66 years of age, in good shape, and in love with the game of golf. I find the game relaxing, energizing and a great way to develop friendships. I have recently been taking lessons and while my irons have really improved, my drive is still inconsistent. When I hit my drive “right”. I can get 250 yards total and 220 yards pretty consistently. Some of the concepts you demonstrated in this video have also been communicated by my golf coach but not as clearly as you do in your video. I am going to try what you explained in this video tomorrow but I would also love to win a lesson with you. Thank you.

Rob. I'd 100% welcome an online session on the driver. Big part of my problem is always trying to hit up on the ball, yet my angle of attach is always negative causing me to sky the ball. Very rarely do I hit the sweetspot on the driver, therefore lose distance. My swing speed is in the low 90's, but think with the proper technique, could can a few more mph's and better distance. I'd be a great use case for senior golfers 🙂

Hi Rob - just love your instruction, it makes the golf swing so much more achievable. I am seventy nine and find your videos so informative and makes me realise my many previous mistakes. Could you tell me where to focus the eyes when addressing the ball ie on top of the ball, in front or behind. Many thanks Ian.

As things stand, I am a 65 year old self-taught golfer. I managed to get down to 12 handicap basically with a pretty good short game and putting often bailing me out. I needed more consistency with the driver though to try and get single to figures and this came to a head in a comp earlier this year when I played probably my best golf ever for 16 holes then my driving went pear shaped and I didn’t have a clue why or how to fix it. So back to the drawing board 6 weeks ago and thats when I came across your channel and for the first time grasped the concept of the importance of wrist position in the takeaway. I need to add this though to a more sound set up and hence my fascination with S&T. (Note not SandM!!) However, and here is the issue, when I go to the stack and tilt and ally it to the new takeaway, my drives resemble lob wedge shots!!! I must be doing something wrong somewhere. 🙈

Rob, your videos keep getting better and better. I’ve been a S&Ter for many years and you’re now my go-to guy when I have a problem. This particular video reminded me that I’ve gotten away from using my lead leg as a post to pivot around. The compass analogy was excellent. Thanks for the great content.

Dear Rob... Not sure if I deserve the lesson, but I think it would benefit my game the most... I switched to S&T 2 years ago and have been hitting my irons better than I ever have... but my scores have not reflected this better iron play as my driving has gotten comparatively worse... hitting less fairways with less distance... I was blaming this on S&T... Im going to implement the ideas from this video and hopefully it improves ... I know with better driving I can hit single digit handi by this year ... so your help would be greatly appreciated and not for nothing I was going to sign up for lesson with you thru Skillest, but you were not accepting new clients at that time... so it would be great to finally get a lesson with you!

My husband and I were fortunate to take a multi day course from Mike and Andy in Las Vegas about 13 years ago or so. I was just learning golf at the time, but Andy had me hitting my driver by the end with ease and further than I had before, and further than I do now. It was a great time with Al Geiberger, a wonderful man, also there along with a few other stars. Unfortunately I was so new I forgot and lost the details of the movement. While my golf has gotten better, my driver is still my nemesis, regardless of what I try and how hard I work on the range. At now, 72, while I do not expect miracles, I am sure I can improve with the proper guidance. I will certainly do my best to put your lesson into action at the range, but would love to have the opportunity of your lesson prize, not only to improve but hopefully show other ladies they can also improve if they try. Cheers! Deb

Hi Rob, your most recent video about driver ball position came up on my RU-vid feed. I watched it and it made so much sense to me. You mentioned this video in your dialogue. I've been struggling with driver since getting seriously into golf about 3 years ago, it sprayed everywhere either a low hook or a high slice. I took this wrench concept to the range today and it instantly had my driver with the correct ball flight and so much less spin. Also the feedback on a poor drive was so much easier to feel and understand rather than "I have no idea what I just did?" I'm still feeling for the ultimate best ball position but all of my drives would have been in play on the range. Thank you, I made it a point to come and comment on this video. I am now a subscriber.

Rob, I've been watching your videos for months. I believe you are absolutely the best at teaching stack and tilt. your explanations are very clear and precise. the reason I am interested in winning a lesson from you, is because golf is my passion and for a number of years I was close to scratch. I always had flaws in my swing. very little hip turn because of the xfactor, and early extension. when I was playing well I wasn't stack and tilt but I did keep my weight forward. in my quest to eliminate those 2 problems I went down a rabbit hole with teachers trying me to get more hip turn, which resulted in developing either a push fade or a slice. I used to hit a draw and with good distance. I am committed to stack and tilt and putting in the time to practice. please pick me, I need to get this fixed

Rob. This was nothing short of a miracle! I had been struggling with my driver lately. Very inconsistent. I watched this video today and did exactly what you said at the range - pelvis tilted forward at set up and 80% weight in front. I felt so ridiculous at first - felt like I was in a straitjacket. Then boom! One after another either straight or draw and very long! And I felt like I was in control. Couldn’t believe it! But still not used to it - like I am not using my trail leg at all. How can this movement generate so much power? This can’t be real! Why didn’t I know about this earlier? This will give me so much confidence at the tee box once I get used to it. Who cares if it feels weird now! Thank you!! Sincerely! Please make follow up video on this if you have additional drills for it. Thanks!

Way back about 1992 when Golf Magazine hooked up about 200 touring pros to a harness and computer, one of the things they discovered is that these people had their left hip closer to the target at the top of their swing than it was at address. They moved their head right going back to create an "athletic" tilt but then allowed it to move towards the target on the downswing. Keeping the head still was not a desired thing. They called that "left side crunch". It impeded forward flow of most everything. I was a hold your head still guy at the time. Some of these guys moved their head a lot both ways. Levelness and arm/shoulder/body connectivity were very important. The first four inches of take-away is crucial to establishing connectivity. It was a three part series with really good artist drawings. I went to that swing and had dramatic improvement. Establishing connectivity can be a hard thing to do when you have done it wrong all your life.

Don’t know that I “deserve” the lesson but sure would like it as I’m a fit…early 70’s golfer who loves the game…but lacks serious distance (or even “acceptable distance “) to allow me to better compete with golfers hitting out there 240 - 260 yards. Guess this is my last go around (final curtain call) to learning this technique so that I can really enjoy these “later years” on the course. Thanks for the consideration!

Yes I will gladly accept an online driver lesson and showcase my improvement on your channel. I have watched your videos regularly for years and transcribe them. I have pages of notes and hours of S&T practice, yet my driver stays in the house so I am not tempted to slice the ball OB. I have just graduated from only teeing off with a 5-wood to now feeling I can use a 3-wood on certain holes. Thank you for your ongoing tutorials. Randy

Rob, I’ve returned to golf last year after 10 years of not playing. I’ve worked harder now than I did back then when I was a 9.( never practiced). I practice everyday now , 3w to lob all feel great and deliver. If I miss I know what the flaw was. Now to the driver, I make contact but, honestly have no feel or comfort when using it. Left / Right you name it. I know it’s the last piece along with Putting that can bring me to the place of confidence in my older golf life. I have no problem sending video as it video of my horrible swing that has helped me change. I will be doing this drill you just shared and may be better at the driver by the time you make your selection. Either way, thanks for the great content I very much try to stack and tilt my game. I’ll hit some nice shots but then some rather poor ones. I’ll throw in a lot of heel contact and a dreaded shank now and then. That’s why I’m trying to learn the Stank And Tilt swing and yes I’m having trouble with the driver. Very inconsistent and just so frustrating, disappointing, and downright depressing. I am however ever hopeful. I’d love the opportunity as whoever is lucky enough to be selected will be one happy person. Good luck to all. All the best. Glenn

33 years old and I’ve been golfing for 3 years and it wasn’t until I started using stack and tilt that I had gained consistently (18.5 handicap but first year being able to break 90 a couple of times). S&T has been what’s given me a nice high draw with my irons but glaring part of my game for improvement is off the tee as I settle to use a 4 hybrid to keep in play. Some days my driver is a draw and other days it’s a push fade which makes it difficult to have confidence in. I’m your typical stack and tilter that says ‘my irons are great but it just hasn’t worked for my driver!’ I think it could be a relatable video for a lot of folks :)

I’m a S/T believer for about 15 years and regularly follow-subscribe to Rob’s channel. Recently I started to struggle with my driver and knew I was falling off the ball with disastrous results. I knew I was doing it, but after watching multiple instructional videos (not S/T) it didn’t get better. Yesterday I rewatched Rob’s series on the driver and with the hip shift I was able to get back my driver consistency. I went from falling off the ball and left/right misses to straight(slight draw) down the middle….I’m over 70 and had been and now again able to hit well over 200 yards, longest 230 dead centre in the fairway. Thank you Rob….I’ve saved your videos so I don’t forget the S/T setup for my driver.

Hi Rob. Started playing again last year after a 20 year hiatus when playing in my teens. Been using stack and tilt since coming back as it resonates with me, however I’ve not bee able to get a grip of my driver to the point where: when I go to GolfZon range to practice driver I put it away after a short time out of the bag due to slicing down the screens in to other people’s view 😂 I’ve no issues getting you down the line and front on angles - it’ll be brutal though.

So I know S&T since years and it works and somehow I had the misconception that it is not as powerful as all the other ideas. Did Pete Cowen the last year and a bit of George Gankas. Was somehow happy with my game, when I stumbled over this video. Ah the old S&T Driver video thing... Let's see.... The hip forward... I don't remember that. I can try it out today... just to make sure that it is still shorter than the rest. Wow, I was so wrong. I hit my drivers as long and some even longer. I went on to play 9 holes and compared. I hit the S&T drives as long and at one hole my longest drive ever... And the funny thing... it is so less complicated and easier... just turn your wrench back and then forward. After the 9 holes I went back to the range and as you are so good with hitting the sweet spot on the driver I increased the speed. In the end I had one of the most fun 50 balls driving range experiences ever... I could turn so fast, the balls were going so far.... I am from Germany and my swing speed is about 108-110... So the drives were all constantly over 250-255 meters carry with 2 year old range balls, measured with voice caddy sc4. I will definitely play the rest of the season using S&T again. The hip forward thing is the game changer!!!!

Once I dedicate myself to doing something I go all in as my body and mind will allow. I've figured out how do almost anything I chose in life fairly well, except golf so far. Although my golf swing was never that bad, it wasn't pro like. I don't expect to do what a pro does because that's their job, but I do expect a nice smooth swing with consistent contact. I know how to shape a ball and how to hit draws, fades, over trees, punch shots etc, but I do early extend even though I compress the ball and swing slightly over the top at times. These past few years, I've learned about quality during practice. Not hitting ball after ball. Now, I'll hit a ball while taking a video. Stop and take a look to see if I did what I wanted. This year, I now only focus on one move each session I want to see on video then move on to next move. It's a marathon for me now, not a sprint mentality. I "WILL" get a nice swing. It's just about when now. I tried an online lesson this past month. Honestly I watch so many YT videos, including yours for years now. I've been thinking about taking online lessons for a while now, including from you. Randomly, last month, after watching a video, I went for it but I found you don't get the person who's running the show. And that match to me matters. Communication between 2 people is key. And doing lessons through posted videos is challenging, so that's even more important to have the person you think will work well together. Having someone other than what you originally thought is not what I expected. And that is exactly what happened. I wished I made the choice, after watching one of your videos and chose to lesson up with you instead. I want someone who I thing is a good match to show me what I'm missing in my attempt to learn how to swing smoothly and correctly for me. I feel like I'm not far, but I need someone who I respect as a great teacher of the swing to let me know one way or another. So if you like my thinking I'd be very happy to get that lesson. And I will work hard at practicing the right way to reach my goal of having a proper golf swing that will keep me golfing and enjoying the game for a long while.

My name is Larry Gray. I’m 75 years old and resumed to golf after 15 years off due to injury. After once being an 8 handicap, I’m having trouble regaining my ability. (I realize I’m 15 years older). I would like to resume golf with a proven method to improve. I’m having difficulty with the driver and would love/appreciate a good lesson. Thanks

Hi Rob, I'm fairly new to S&T. I have enjoyed the book that dovetails well with your videos. Having been to the range and finding a much better contact with the S&T system. Now I have a better understanding of the hip position I'm looking forward to testing it out very soon. Any tips on hybrids? And ball position for the hybrid?

Thank you for uploading so many high-quality videos; My golf skills have improved as a result. There is one question that has been bothering me, and I hope to get some guidance from you. From the videos, I understand that the initial setup for the driver requires an 80/20 weight distribution, and the body should tilt at the beginning. My two questions are: 1. What should the weight distribution between the feet be at the top of the driver swing? Is it still 80/20? 2. Does the initial setup for irons/hybrids also require a tilt?

Another drug video. Thank you!! Question; when hitting less than driver off a tee, such as a fairway wood, do you want a tee it low and hit down like on the fairway or do you want to play it forward and it like a driver?

Hi Rob. Help? My life long issue is over rotating so that the club goes past parallel. Not like John Daly or Bubba 🤪Ha! All sorts of problems develop. What I think works is being more body hip conscience in the swing, rather than arms controlling. Please help! Do you have a cure for that?

Rob, another great video. Thanks. Video quality is superb. Question: You used Rory's swing as an example and he clearly rolls his forearems over one another around P8. Andy and Mike are fans of moving wrists only up and down and you've talked a lot about the RWFW. Are there cases where Rory's mechanics are appropriate, or is it too ikely to encourage an over draw? BTW, if there isn't one yet, I think S&T needs a hashtag called #frontofthearc 😏

I just learned about S/T 2 weeks ago from watching your videos. I feel drawn to it as weight shift is biggest concern (along with controlling the club face). I have been trying to do it but I still feel a lot of weight moving to my right foot. Today I was hitting almost every shot fat and I finally had to push off of my right foot to avoid fat shots. I preload my weight left but somehow during the backswing I am shifting the weight right. I am also paralyzed with swing thoughts due to trying to manage the weight shift and control the club face all at once. I am afraid to hit my driver right now I only tried one today.

Hi Rob, 1 handicap but struggling with the driver, inconsistent ball path. Would love to get the swing more settled with weight forward. I’ve been using the stack and tilt philosophy for a while but can’t manage it with the driver. Probably due to the longer shaft? Thanks, Nick

Great video. I've seen the wrench videos before but just sort of clicked for me today. Question: with the front hip moving 6ish inches forward, is the wrench centred around the extended hip or the lead foot? It may seem like an inconsequential question but a 6" difference in centre makes a difference, no? An in terms of why you should pick me for a driver lesson. Well, who wouldn't want a lesson from you!

I know this video was about 'driver'. I've decided to start the season using irons only. The driving range was closed today so I pretty much went out, stuck my lead hip forward, moved all weight forward and experienced the most solid ball striking ever for the entire round. I've also never hit the ball further. This concept dramatically simplifies the swing. Brilliant! Thanks so much Rob.

You also need to over over exaggerate these feelings- I’ve had the ball in the middle of my stance with my driver - my hips as laterally forwards as possible- my handle 6 inches in front of the clubface - which is now looking way right - in practice it takes no time at all to get the ball starting right - trying to curve left - but out on the golf course - ….. that’s another matter

I place the ball way forward in my stance, l still hit the ball pretty long but honestly not consistently. I will try your recommendation when next l go to the range and hope to maintain my distance and get more consistency
