Searching for the Costa Rican Vinegaroon, Valeriophonus nara, an night in the mountains of the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.
Watch a vinegaroon spray my thumb here (beginning of the video):
• 'Fearful Appearance'
Corrections / additional comments:
04:38 - This appears to be an extreme case of a transition between the first and second phase of foraging for these termites wherein soldiers have led workers to a selected log to be newly colonized. This means I was incorrect in assuming that they were already living inside.

03:15 - juv. Costa Rican Vinegaroon (Valeriophonus nara)
04:38 - Conehead Termites (Nasutitermes sp.)

It is a true joy to have a new video from you. I so admire your attitude towards the natural world and all living things. Apart from when you allow things to bite or sting you, we don't know what unintended assaults you may incur in your work? Your in-depth knowledge is really impressive, and makes me wish I had been true to my childhood dream of being a zoologist. The film quality is excellent. Altogether a real pleasure to watch.

Vinegaroons are such cool arachnids. I had one as a pet for some time and really enjoyed my time with her before she passed. I loved watching her dig, and she was very fun to feed. She was very scared of me at first but I made a point to always let her "smell" me before feedings, and it really didn't take long before she stopped displaying defensive signs and instead would come out in the open since she understood (in her way) that she was about to be fed.

I could be wrong but, from what I've seen, the majority of tarantulas fall in this category as well. Scary as hell but, actually really chill and have no real interest in biting humans. Still scare the hell out of me if I randomly happened upon one tho. Can't fight nature, I guess 🤷

When I lived in El Paso TX, I was very fortunate to have been given a fairly large vinegaroon, which was very frightening to me but because I loved insects (and arachnids) I accepted him as my pet, I named him "Vinney". The reason I post this comment is because I noted that as you tried to put your specimen back down it was hesitant, and I can, from experience explain why: It is because they, like reptiles, love warm surfaces, mine loved to sit in the cruck of my arm, completely content to stay there while I typed letters home (I was in the Army at the time, posted at Fort Bliss). Vinegaroons are amazing little critters, quite unafraid of people, and docile.

But we did witness and record an army ant parade where they like made a highway with ants standing up side by side with the colony traveling inside the road they had created. I will NEVER forget seeing that.
