Diverticular disease is a common condition, especially in industrialized nations. In the United States, for example, it affects about 10-25% of people over the age of 40, and by age 60, the prevalence increases to 50-66%. It’s less common in Asian and African populations but is becoming more prevalent as their diets change to include less fiber. Diverticular disease is more common in developed countries where low-fiber diets are prevalent, and lifestyle factors such as sedentary behavior are common.
