(tl;dr: everyone loved portal your point is moot) It kinda was set up to be on release though. Yahtzee wasn't alone here, everyone that played Portal on release though it was the second coming of christ and could forsee the impact it would have on the genre, and on writing narration in general. Kinda like everyone saw coming the ridiculous impact HL or Deus Ex had on story driven single player FPSs or the spread of RPG elements into shooters. Even some of the games he doesn't particularly like end up being highly influential and industry standards and templates for entire genres and franchises (think Gears, Assassin's Creed, or Uncharted). But ultimately, he plays a lot of video games, so do devs. Innovative and clever concepts are going to hit them at the same time. Also he loved Driver San Francisco and it's barely a footnote in the industry, and Spec Ops: The Line is pretty much a cult classic but it didn't have a lasting impact on other games because it's agressively cruel towards the player and that is impossible to sell. So no, "the ones he loves always end up going down as some of the most revolutionary pieces ever made in the games industry" is a superficial, silly statement that could be said about Metacritic, about the average gamer, about you (probably).

Because Undertale, like FNAF, is a Touhou ripoff that, like Yahtzee said, has the worst fucking fans in the world. There is a certain range of games I hear the mentally disabled 10 year olds, and then again regular 10 year olds, raving about in the most annoying fucking way possible. It's not that good of a game, and Touhou surpasses it in a major way. It's just not worth reviewing.

Arcralf Well Modern Warfare 1 was a good game and I liked it and the story was good but in general CoD does just release the same game every year. If Valve released Portal every year (which would be a miracle in itself Valve releasing a game every year would make the universe implode on itself I think.) Yahtzee would hate on Portal if it released the same game every year. I remember he said in a video, the first game makes the money and then the second game uses that money to expand on the first game, and it's not supposed to be until the 3rd game that they start to fuck things up

Yeah, these small, refined-to-perfection games, like Portal, UT, Hotline Miami, OFDP, and many others, really feel like the, sort of, purest elements of the craft, they're the Well-Tempered Clavier of videogames.

well, they also have TF2, Portal, Left 4 Dead, etc. They just tend to shuffle them around a lot, working on one thing at at time it seems. Add in steam, and all the craziness they've been working to make for that (as well as the huge success they're getting now that people are realizing that consoles are basically crap PCs these days), and I can understand why they take a long time. Still definitely keeping themselves relevant, but just for other things.

CesarTheKing when it comes to actual games though the latest game they released was portal 2. they are a game company that rarely releases games most of their income comes from steam. When I said I need to be stimulated by a company it means I need something new, Team fortress, portal, and all that are great but it's just the same thing over and over again when you play it with nothing new unless you add mods to change things up which means the community is doing all the work to keep valve games relevant in pop culture and the video game industry- hence why I said "the very devoted fans are what's keeping Valve in the spot light." People who love the old games reffure them to younger people who get hooked and tell their friends about it and so on and so forth i will more than likely get my future children into playing old valve games. then you have the modding community who spends hours, days- even months to add new things. That's great but like I said it's not stimulating to me I want something new- it dosen't have to be half life 2 eppisode 3 it dosen't have to be a new team fortress or portal I just want something to let me know valve is still working on stuff, having to wait over 7 years for a continuation or new game is just rediculous, the longer they take the higher my expectations it's ok to take like 5 or 6 years for a game I'm cool with them taking their time- but when there's nothing for over 7 years that's a problem.

Sugardaddy501 90% of the players play Dustbowl like 99% of the time. Yeah it's nice to have variety, but it's pretty damn hard to justify spending resources to make a map that people will play for two weeks then go back to playing the one they play for the other 50 weeks in the year.

Menea6587 the only time Dustbowl gets played "99%" of the time is on Valve servers, i played the game for a good 3 years and clicking the "Browse server" button is probably the only thing you can do unless you like being paired up to empty servers by the matchmaking system. so this whole "Dustbowl is the only map and its repetitive" is quite invalid

Breeze Ark It is like that beacause so many games followed its route that nowadays it has been improved in any possible way. That said, this doesn't mean that is not good even now, let aside when it came out and revolutionised the industry. I mean, Doom and wolfestein 3d are just mere fps games, with very little story, a very basic gunfight, poor level design, poor 3D implementation and quite repetitive, but are also a milestone for the industry. History has to start from somewhere.

Oh I played it a long long long time after it came out originally, when I played TF2 everybody already knew the motions and no matter what I did to out smart somebody they always knew what I was gonna do.
