Starting in May 1846 at Independence, I head for Sacramento Valley and encounter some of the Easter Egg weather events. This includes the heavy rains on the plains pre-set for Spring 1846, as well as the blizzard in the Sierra Nevadas in late October 1846. Also, I show you the full power of the Spanish skill (translating the text of the ONE speaker of the language that doesn't know any English in the entire game). He says the same exact thing, and you can even trade with him, without the skill (you just Spanish text instead of English). My advice, spend those 10 points on another skill, or save them for a bigger score at the end.
This is a re-enactment of the trip made by the Donner-Reed Party (or as close to it as the game will permit). I've named the 5 passengers after the 5 daughters George Donner brought along for the journey, and assigned them their approximate ages. Although George Donner was a Farmer, he was a fairly wealthy one, so I assigned him the Banker starting occupation to give him enough cash to buy 3 wagons (as he really did). In the game, the blizzard and snowbound effects only last a couple weeks. The real Donner Party was trapped for months, and forced to eat leathery animal hides, boots, and other things before desperation drove some of them to cannibalism.
Saying the real party was slow seems to be more a thing of myth than fact. The Donners and Reeds didn't leave Independence until May 10th, meaning they traveled a hell of a lot faster than you can in this game (I left on May 1st and stayed at 12+ hours for most of the trip with no major delays and still just barely made it in time).
Another difference is the fact that all 5 of his daughters survived, but here I lost 2. Also, I actually finished the trip, where George and his wife, Tamzene, died and were later cannibalized.
I found a website dedicated to information and debunking myths, if you're interested in learning more about the real tragedy:
